View Full Version : Why cant people use the door handles?

I have been looking for a 300 tdi Defender for a bit now, not all but many of them have dents above the doors handle caused by people slamming the door closed by pushing the door panel instead of the handle, WHY!! I have a Nissan patrol with a faded patch of paint where the previous owner did the same thing, how hard is it to use the handle? I have just looked at a pic on car sales, I was not interested in it as it is a td5 and I want a 300tdi, but EVERY door in the car had the same big dent over the handle, a whole family of door pushers it seems!! Most annoying is when people do it to your car, the father in law is a door pusher, you are unloading shopping and he comes to help nooooo!!!
You guessed it my pet hate :)

:lol2:

Chris, good luck finding one without a few, err, character lines. :D

Remember that anything pre Tdci uses aluminium door skins that ding just from a light breeze too.

My ex used to say that the Defender is born middle aged as it comes from the factory with cellulite.
She was a Patrol driver though.

I dont mind character marks, but even if the doors where steel pushing the panel shut especially if the door does not shut correctly the first time will dent the door. If I find a good car like this I will fix the panel it will not be a deal breaker for sure, I just cant understand why people do it.

Not twice on my car you wouldnt, part of the problem people do it on other peoples cars too.. Bit like those in supermarkets who open their doors and slam into your door, they may not care about their car but it is bang out of order damaging someone else's.
Chris
Edit.. And why would anyone do something that is obviously damaging their gear/car whatever it is. You see what you are doing is causing damage you need to be some kind of idiot to keep doing it when there is a handle so close by and what it is there for..We go off roading and damage are trucks doing what they are designed for, dings and bumps arrive with normal use, but why do something that for sure causes damage? You may as well buy the car new and hit all the doors with a hammer over the handle to get that flat spot started.

How do you close the bonnet on your vehicles?

i discovered recently that the technique I had been using for about 40 years without incident is the wrong way to do it.

I Lift the bonnet about 200mm up from the catch, and drop it. It sounds horrid, but is the best way I was told (so you don't ding it).

About 100mm seems to be enough for my bonnets.

Dropping the bonnet from a suitable height is the way i read it should be done for the reason you mentioned.

Maybe some of us used to do it the other way because we started driving when cars had panels that were difficult to dent with a sledge hammer and were in no danger of being damaged with your bare hands. :)

I can recall looking at new 110s at Trivett Classic when we had Range Rover Club meetings there in the early 2000s.

Every one of them had dents in the doors where the door handles attached, and I believe it was from the support panel not being flush with the skin.

I thought it quite Land Rover like that 110s were sold pre dented so that this saved the new owner the bother of DIY. LOL

So Maybe don't be so harsh.
AFAIR they may have fixed this on Pumas.

I can't just drop the bonnet on mine as the catch hits the edge of the striker plate, I have to push it back a touch towards the firewall and then push the bonnet closed.

Any other car I just drop. :D

I drop my bonnet about 10cm and it closes I would never slam it shut.
Here is a link for what I am talking about, it is not the panel pulled in by the handle it is the panel dented because some idiot does not know what the handle is for, every door too!!

PS Dad taught me as a kid to drop a bonnet, close a door firmly but not slammed & that the place for your feet in a car was the floor or the peddles. SWMBO uses the window frame to close the door, not if I'm looking though.

Sit on a car, yes I hate that too.. I picked up someone who was working at the range and was late. He got in my car with an egg and bacon sandwich I almost told him to get out right away. I thought all was well, when he got out there was egg on my leather seats and grease on the door trim :censored::censored::censored:

If Defender doors weren't such a PITA to close it wouldnt be an issue, problem is, the handle is designed for opening them, not closing them, thats why people push on the panel...

Dad was always in one of his demo Defenders when I was a kid, so I had to learn to use the handle :p

On the Defender I don't mind so much but when I had my old Audi S3 there was a "no eating inside" rule. Then a dog came along and the rule kind of got forgotten about after dribble on windows and seats, dog hair etc, etc.

My dogs best mate was a GSP. Unfortunantly he moved up north with his parents.
They are great dogs. I had short listed a vizsla before my ridgeback but like gsp's, vizsla's remain puppies all there life, unlike my ridgy who is a couch potato!

You guys would hate me then. Decades ago when in the army for some reason that I can't remember I had to use another sections Defender. As it wasn't mine I wasn't aware that the driver door didn't close properly. I slammed it a few times,no luck, so I gave it a bit more weeties and really pulled it shut. It had the sliding half glass windows. They shattered and I was covered in glass. And the door still wasn't properly shut. The other section weren't impressed. We still had over a month to go, out in the sticks with no hope of replacement. And it was a cold wet winter.

I'm procrastinating on upgrading / regrading my 300 130 dual cab to something ford motivated and had contemplated offering you the old girl... Nice and close and would be cheap. Reading this thread I'm too embarrassed to consider that plan now. I bought it near ten years ago ex NSW forestry had been rolled a few times but chassis was straight. It pulls as good as a 300 can running out to 20plus psi but EGTs under control. But of course every panel is binged banged bent and twisted... You would cringe!

And to think we are both fans of GSPs. My mate Zero a three year old is into day four of teaching his brand new eight week old sister Mollie how to do the GSP thang !

Anyways ramble off

I personally love it when people do that to one of my vehicles, I just open the door right back at them with the strength of my boot on the internal door panel to get a nice bit inertia in the door.

And the high above ground sharp bottom corners on Landrover doors are so much more effective! Usually get the other car about halfway up the door.

Front doors being opened on to my Disco gives me a laugh because from what I've seen they just dent their own door on my rock sliders. Rear doors are different however due to the high impact from the shape of the wheel arch.

Trouble is everything was sooo heavy. I had (not sure they where ever here) an Austin Ambassador https://www.google.com.au/search?q=austin+ambassador+cars+sale&client=ubuntu&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=941&tbm=isch&imgil=qnhpnJXeqRD-KM%253A%253BFpECseGNdu-CQM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.simoncars.co. uk%25252Faustin%25252Fambassador.html&source=iu&pf=m&fir=qnhpnJXeqRD-KM%253A%252CFpECseGNdu-CQM%252C_&dpr=1&usg=__9TAUC-UIbffREN2_IRedqm62IHw%3D&ved=0ahUKEwiF5Y-soYzKAhVIJ6YKHfCyBQMQyjcIKg&ei=aFqIVoWRGsjOmAXw5ZYY#imgrc=qnhpnJXeqRD-KM%3A&usg=__9TAUC-UIbffREN2_IRedqm62IHw%3D
It was so heavy the small 1.7 engine just about pushed it along. Someone hit my rear door and dad said we could beat it out. No way on earth was it going to beat out not before we both got old the metal was so thick so we gave up so we bought another door.

Speaking of car park behaviour, I was just getting out of the 130 at Woolies in Dickson a few weeks ago and a bloke was nosing in with his Prado in the next row.
He drove straight into the door of the car beside and kept going

He was a grey nomad driving a new Prado and it left a lovely big mark down the side of the other car.

I was too gobsmacked to say anything and forgot to get his rego so I could leave it on the other cars windscreen.
I think I was still fuming from the 20 something woman in a Corolla that dived into the spot I was backing the Deefer into.
That happened twice in four days in the same carpark.
My step father said I should've just kept backing.

I heard a story of a jeep driver who had his park stolen. Apparently once the driver of the other car left he hooked his winch up to the car and dragged it out before parking in there. Just left it where it lay.

I'd love to have seen it in person! :D

Damn I like that ! :D

Years ago I had a spot snatched by a bloke who just shrugged his shoulders and walked.

After parking the partners Patrol I calmly walked over, found a pebble, took off a valve cap then screwed the cap back down so the valve was leaking.

I only regret I didn't do it to two (most cars only have one spare )

The ex was gobsmacked, she'd never seen me do anything like that before.

Also a bit off topic, but related. My missus is Italian we were parking at a shopping center and reversing into a space and a woman tried to dive in. My missus jumped out with Italian spirit and blocked the space with herself. The woman tried to run her over but Betta (my missus) stood her ground. We parked in our space and the woman got out and started abusing my missus big time telling her to go back home and other much worse racist BS. She then went into Central shopping center in Cairns and the missus followed her.. She went to the bank with an Aboriginal security guard and an Asian and two Chinese tenders. I followed my missus in just as she confronted this woman and loudly told her she was not a Bleeping wog and she was Australian and proud of it and she told the woman she was a racist bitch. You could have cut the air with a knife :D. The woman said nothing and went white, I thought she was going to pass out. Every eye in the room was saying to the woman you total cow, the woman scuttled out.. A win I think.

done that too, a pintle hook in a reece hitch with low range reverse means their car doesnt even mark the rear cross member it you back in straight, make sure you have the back full "sorry, car park was empty when I started reversing in, no reversing camera and your car didnt appear in either of my wing mirrors and I cant see through the load."
