Gday everyone, after lurking in the background I thought it time I joined in and registered.
Ive started a project breathing new life into an old 96 130 defender I picked up from a friend the plan is to strip it down repair whats needed and rebuild again with a new tray and slide on camper.
Ive stripped it down to assess what needs to be done including motor gearbox/transfer-case, not too many surprises found but I do have some questions that I'm hoping members can answer.
I hear a lot mentioned about upgraded cylinder head on later models can someone tell me when they came in and if my 96 mod TDI is likely to have one.
The land rover engine manual includes a caution saying not to de-glaze the cylinder bores does anyone know why as normally I would have them honed before fitting new rings.
Ive also found two small internal cracks on the exhaust manifold where the turbo vain faces is this common and does it present a problem as the turbo itself is fine.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome Wanderlust, 130's are such good tourers. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to answer your technical questions.
Don.

Firstly welcome:D
When it is mentioned upgraded head it is referred to mainly the AMC Head which has different water gallerys ;)
Some say it is needed i guess if you feel you need it and have some spare coin Break a leg:p.
There is a fellow not to far from you that is a vendor on here and also has a Ebay store (Roverlords) if you needs parts .
Im just down Narre not far away;)

Good stuff Wonderlust, I'd love to build up a 130 like that. What type of cab are you doing?

Thanks for the welcome and the replies everyone as soon as I work out how to post pictures Ill include a few of the progress to date.
rangiman, thanks for the info on the head I have an option on a rebuild kit that contains a new head with the improved cooling Ill probably go with that as well as an improved radiator to be on the safe side.
To answer Slunnie's question its a crew cab with a drop side tray which will suit my plans for a slide on camper setup.

Once again thanks for your replies pic,s to follow.:D

Great project. Looking forward to the build progress.
As well as a good cooling system, plan for some form of engine temp alarm like an engine watchdog etc.

looks like your images aren't showing.

Here is how to do it:

when you create a post, before you reply, scroll down and you will see Additional options - attach files - [manage attachments] - then, [choose file], [ upload] - grab the image from your computer and upload it this way.

There may be other ways to do images here, but thats what I do.

Welcome to the 130 club. You have made a wise choice. While I am not a real techno I am happy to give any advice I can.

Good luck with the rebuild

Tried to post couple of photos of my rig but having trouble will try again

To take the weight of the Trayon I beefed up the suspension with heavy duty King Springs with Airman airbag suspension and double Bilstein shocks. Rides great both off and on-road by simply adjusting the pressure in the airbags

Looks great. Having started my rebuild with very limited time and space, i left the cab on the chassis. I now wish I had the time and space to do as you have done and stripped it right back and started from scratch...

I have to confess Ranieman it is true I am a tragic we have 3 D1 TDI's in the family :p
Andy130 I debated whether to keep the body in one piece but it seemed just as easy to dismantle it and that way I can store the bits under my house until I'm ready form them.
Chenz that a good looking rig thanks for the photo of the rear suspension that's on of the details I'm yet to work out, did you put a lift kit yours as well as the heavier spring?

Well guys yesterday I turned the corner all the dismantling and inspecting is complete and I started the clean down and painting of the chassis:D. Ill start ordering engine and gearbox parts next week, still debating whether to replace the head or just have the valves re-seated as original head is in fine condition in fact the whole motor measures up well within LR spec's. The one exception being the oil pump housing that was completely shot and expensive $700:eek: but Id be a fool to cut corners at the cost of oil presser.

No lift kit just the King Springs.

Some other modifications I made or had done to date:

Ran all the accessories through a fuse box under the drivers seat
Put in centre roof console to take UHF and HF Radios and interior and map lights

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/01/591.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/hldmqSZKj)
Put in Ashcroft lockers front and rear
Twin cylinder ARB compressor and tank with external coupling to attached air hose
Twin Deep cycle batteries - one in camper and one next to crank battery under passenger seat in parallel to run fridge and other accessories
Dual battery management system
LED Spotlights
Rhino rack roofracks
Tip Top Heavy duty tray with Trundle Tray for extra storage
127 litre long range fuel tank
Chipped for better pulling power

I am sure I will think of a few more add-ons

Thanks
