Query re Mulgo Gas Strut

G'day all,

After a few months now of using Mulgo's gas strut I've got a query for the masses.

Firstly, there appears to be quite a bit of flexing of the panel in the car where the mount is bolted. This piece is bolted on top of carpet and soundproofing, although it's is very securely fastened. Should I expect this flexing, and is it okay, or do I need to take steps to minimise it? And if the latter, what?

Secondly, when I open the door I do so gently. When my wife opens the door she does not. I've noticed very slight marks on the right quarter panel that appear to be dots from the new spare marking the dust on that panel. This means the door is swinging some way past the 90 degrees that I had set it to. Again, is that normal, or should I make some changes?

Yes, I agree the side panel flexes lots!

I dont (yet) have the Mungo strut, but I think the standard strut attachment panel needs some reinforcement behind the panel, in the wheel arch area...

Has anyone had the wind catch the rear door and rip/bend the attachment point off?

I've had the gas strut mounted on my 110 for 40,000kms, and haven't had to modify the mount. Seems to be going strong...so far!

As for the marking on the rear quarter, it's definitely there. Like you said though you do need to accompany the door when you open it otherwise I reckon there will be a bit of denting over time.

So overall yes all this is normal :D

I haven't had any dramas with damage to the attachment so far, having said that though I am very aware of accompanying the door open in strong winds until the spare is resting against the rear quarter panel

I'll eventually get myself one of Rijidij's carriers so that should prevent one of these two issues, at least.

I found out the hard way with my last Defender when a gust of wind on top of Mt Wellington in Tasmania ripped the door from my fingers as I started to open it and swung it into the quarter panel causing a dent in the panel. Even with normal opening or slight side angles you have to be careful not to let it swing too wide. Every second Defender has the tell-tale dent in that panel, and it won't pop out as the aluminium gets stretched.

Larger diameter tyres would cause an even bigger problem.

I think it needs further reinforcement in the arch area to help reduce flex with the standard Land Rover strut and is one of the jobs on my list to do.

Obviously wheel carriers resolve this problem.

I've had mine for several years without problem but my vehicle is a D90. A fine piece of kit as far as I am concerned. Worth every cent.

If I had any issues, I would talk to Mulgo.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that there are issues with the item. I just have some queries about the overall system and whether or not I can do anything simple to improve on what I've observed.
