Hi all it has been a while. I've been playing with my new toy. A new caravan.
The tub tows like a dream and the service station owners rub their hands together when they see me. Last trip I got 30L - 100km. without the caravan I'm getting 14L-100km. Will a tune up help or should I just enjoy the ride?

That sounds about what my Dad used to get towing his big tandem axle van with either his 4.0 or 4.6 P38s. In comparison his TDV6 Sport towing a similar van uses under 20l/100km.

Are you towing in 3rd or drive? Might be revving too low in top cog and labouring the motor.
Also, are all the tyre pressures right?
I returned high 18's/100km in mine when towing 4t, so 30 is very high.

Towing in drive. But as you can see I'm towing a brick.Do you think a wind deflector would help.http://20160107-104128

Perhaps! More caravaners here might give some insight. If you get the chance to tow in 3rd, give it a try and see how you go. That's the only advice I can offer!

3thousand revs Vs 2400,,
at 100 kays the RR is bloody close to peak torque.
I get 3.5 kays per litre on gas towing 2T
4L? 4.6? tired? fresh? Thor? the other one?

I only had a small van 1.5 tonne but I found it much easier in sport mode on the gearbox helps it keep the revs up on the hills, might be worth a try.

What sort of speed are you towing at? Above 95kph the fuel consumption seems to go up exponentially

Towing a 1.5t CT with roof rack and fully loaded vehicle, I use 20l/100kms. That's over hilly terrain aiming for 100kmph. Drops to 18 on the flat and a little lower without the roof rack. Thirty sounds abnormal. Much too high.

Do you have a 4L or 4.6L mine is a 4L.

Unless you alter the ECM its the same fuel map for both, you should use less due to the extra 4.6 torque,, maybe.
The proper 4.6 fuel map does wonders though,,
My 4L would only hold top downhill, what a gutless POS it was,,

I'm happy with the pulling power of the P38. I love the comfort and the sitting position. The caravan I'm towing is 3.100 high it may just be what I have to live with the fuel consumption.
I will try many of the idea's members have suggested and I will post the results.
Many thanks to all of you.

My fuel consumption had not been great on my 2000 yr, it never really bothered me as its my second car for camping trips, recenty noticed some power hesitation at various rpms and hunting between top gears, that did bother me.
Cleaned the maf with crc maf cleaner and it has made a huge difference. It did not look that dirty so I was not expecting much improvement. But I have never cleaned the maf since buying it and I have done 80000, the car has done 180,000.
Performance is heaps better and smoother the hunting for gears has stopped. I've checked the consumption and that is also much better, but I will need to drive it for a week to see the realistic difference.

Stats in, cleaning the maf I'm now at 18l/100 previously at 20l/100 doing the same city driving as before, he'll of a lot smoother and more power.
