Where does this bit belong. (1971 2a)
It was several years ago when I pulled the vehicle down and
now I am racking my brain trying to picture where it belongs.
I have a feeling it was somewhere near the clutch mechanism.

Cheers, Mick.

I think it is the bracket that holds the bell housing drain plug which is normally out and is inserted for wading.
I think it is normally attached to one of the bell housing bolts.

Thanks Phil,
that makes sense.
I knew it was somewhere on the bell housing, but was thinking more clutch mechanism.

Cheers, Mick.

I removed the same item over the weekend....it was attached to the lowest bell housing bolt facing toward the engine. When I took it off, I had no idea what it's purpose was other than to catch mud.

I have always thought it should have been a gate device where it would have an open window and be a simple slide to close before going through water or mud. As it is, you have to spend time underneath the vehicle with a tool to unbolt, move and bolt up again.

And by the time you've done it things have had a chance to cool down a bit...

You all do understand that the plug can be fitted and left in situ for a few thousand miles? There is no valid reason to have to insert plug before a mud/water crossing, then remove on the other side. Even if your rear seal leaks a little ( and none of our well maintained machines do :D :D ) its going to take a while to get enough oil to affect the clutch.
I always put the plug in at the first rain, both series and defender, and remove after the creeks have stopped running and no chance of falling in a muddy bog. Laying on your back on a dry garage floor beats laying on your back in mud!
Cheers Scott
