Ugh I know.

I DID search this but there were so many hits that I'm still confused.

My situation is that I want to repaint the interior surfaces of my tub. Most of the paint is sound (but I want to change the colour). some areas required repair and are bare metal.

I know that etch primer is desirable on aluminium surfaces but understand that it damages painted surfaces - so can/should I use it?

What about other primers (under an acrylic lacquer primer/ topcoat) - Is it better to use a zinc primer (which I understand will stick to the aluminium) or something else?

have you looked at raptor liner? they have a 1k etch in a aerosol, for the bare metal, then you top coat it all with the raptor. Raptor shoots from a schutz gun, or you can roll or brush it. Also has a tintable, so you can get the colour you want.

Under raptor, their etch primer on bare metal is fine.

General rule is etch is only for bare metal, but there are some combination etch primers that can go over anything.

Be careful with acrylic primers, they will not sit well under products like raptor liner.

It it being done properly in a booth? If so a quality epoxy urethane primer will go over the bare metal and keyed paint. The seppos swear by it ( I used to read quite a bit over here ).

If your doing this yourself, I have found that Hi-Chem super etch epoxy primer is nothing short of brilliant. I painted my old Citroen CX about 12years ago with acrylic laquer ... the paint has been fubar for quite a few years now ( acrylic laquer/dulon doesn't last for **** sadly). However all the stainless door trims I first coated with the above primer (from a rattlecan) then some GMH black (ie: satin black). I expected the stainless to peal within a couple of months. Fast forward 12years. And there the most unmarked paint on the car. Absolutely amazing!
