D2 Vibration Sound - Not Prop Shaft

I have a strange vibration sound when driving and the RPM about 2500. If i power on hard i don't hear the vibration.
It sounds like a loose baffle inside a muffler, but I've removed my centre muffler and CAT and it is still there.
It almost sounds like it is coming from the engine bay, but that could be misleading as i'm not sure where it is coming from, it could potentially be under the dash.

I've got no idea what it could be. Any ideas?

P.S I've removed the disc brake guards on the wheels. It is not them.

Didn't you replace a front diff recently? could be coming from something there?

Check the turbo heat shield,had a similar noise on my D2.Rear lower bolt rusted out;);););)

Rear diff but not that kind of serious noise anyway.

Might be it.

Could be a bit high in the rev range but have you eliminated the handbrake shoe rattle, gently ease on the handbrake and see if it goes away

Hi Jazzman,
I had something similar with a non-LR vehicle, and concluded that it was exactly what you said - a loose or corroded muffler baffle.
It actually turned out to be due to a worn / broken engine mount.
Sounding as though it is coming from the engine bay fits with that possibility.
Mine was most noticeable when decelerating - fits with your observation about not being evident when you power on hard.
May be worth a check.

If it's a td5 check the vibration damper on the transfer case and also the heat shields on the mounts

Not yet, I'm going to remove the turbo shield first. Will do this tomorrow night.

Ours also has a nasty vibration that comes and goes. The rear tyres (Khumo) are distorted and need to be replaced so that is obviously a suspect. There is an intermittent 'thumping " too like travelling over expansion breaks in the road. Sometimes a clunking and feels like the handbrake is being applied slightly but quickly. Having done the handbrake 20K ago I have just had a look inside and it seems perfect. Uni joints good. Engine and transfer case rubbers look good. Transfer case needs top-up. Getting that today.

PS Vibration ceases (for 20 to 120km) if I stop, roll gently backwards and apply the handbrake.

The vibration damper is the triangular shaped weight behind the handbrake , and the heat shields are on the lh gearbox mount as well as lh engine mount but if you apply the hand brake and it goes away for a while then I'd be revisiting that . On the backing plate where the shoes rub tends to wear away , so it can be removed and re welded, this is assuming you have done the modification to the shoes and springs.

I did a service on my car this weekend. Started a 3:30pm Sunday. Supposed to be a normal filter and oil change with grease of prop shaft as per usual. After this I was going to investigate this vibration.

However, I found a bolt was missing from the front of my transfer case. I replaced this bolt and checked the fluid level.... measured SFA. So i put about 1.5lts in there.
After this I decided to check my rear diff as i was told by two people it appears to be weeping out the filler hole.
Turns out the cross pin for the spider gears had dropped out the middle section but the ends were still in the spider gears. The spider gears are damaged.

Replaced the rear diff with my rebuilt spare and it also gave me the opportunity to fit the axle o-rings i'd got from Mario months ago.

I'll be listening for the vibration again now that some major components have been re-oiled and replaced. I didn't really get an opportunity to investigate the vibration sound of the weekend.
I had done my service and replaced my diff by 7pm. Including 20mins of travel time for stuff. Not bad I reckon.

Trying to upload the bulletin but can't do it on this tablet , so had a look and if you type in down the bottom of this page " the ultimate solution to td5 vibrations " go to page 38 , post number 379 , by offtrack there is a link , that's the bulletin re mod
On top of this where the shoes rub on the backing plate tend to wear the metal of the backing plate down causing the same as well as possible sticking

A 5000 km later and all is well. For the record, and in case it is of interest to anyone else with similar symptoms here is my follow-up:

The Khumo tyres on the rear had delaminated so badly the tyre guys clustered round in amazement that we had actually driven there. New tyres all round. A shame as there was some life left in the tread.

Transfer case was dry. Topped it up. Luckily the filler plug shifted OK but I have not been able to shift the drain plug. Can I just keep putting a longer bar on it? Anything likely to pop if the plug wont budge?

Anyway, all symptoms have gone and no recurrence. TC seems to be holding together after such awful treatment.

I have seen advice before re removing the heat shield. :confused:

I would NOT recommend doing that, as I did it and set the bonnet noise/heat blanket alight! :o

I was towing a caravan up a hill and the heat build up was obviously too much.

The transfer case takes 2 litres to refill, or 2.3 litres from full, you may want to put some more in.
As for the drain plug, maybe it was lock tighted.

I'm topping up the TC today. Hoping it won't take too much. I guess the proper thing to do is find out where it's leaking. So much "wet" not easy to pinpoint the source(s).
