Got one today. Trying to sell a vehicle and reduced it $500 from last weeks price as it is dragging on.. get the "whats the least you'll take" txt. Replied with a $100 reduction and got a no thanks is that all you are going to drop it by?? Response. I mentioned that i had already dropped $500 and then i get called a unpleasant and unprintable name and a speil about being rude to a woman with little negotiation skills... to add fuel to her self ignited bonfire of anger and hate i sent back a sweet apology for appearing rude due to the lack of smilies being used in my first reply, and that maybe she should at least view the vehicle first before making rock bottom negotiation overtures.
Where do these people come from???
I thought about sending her a link to an anger management clinic but who knows what they are capable of so just ended it politely ..
☺ oh happy day☺

Yes JC, they walk amongst us. When I was shopping around for a rooftop tent last year, I spoke to a guy who had a suitable tent which had been advertised online for more than a month. After a day of SMS tennis, I ended up sorting out a time to collect the tent.
When I was almost at his house (200km round trip), the guy rang me and said don't bother as he just sold it for more than his quoted price. Then he got really annoyed when I said that wasn't a very honourable thing to do!

Hmmm.....
I have a car on Gumtree at the moment. I have had a few messages offering $500. They're just playing. I accept and I never hear from them again.
One guy said he would collect it. On the agreed day, he didn't turn up.
Another fellow wanted just one part of the car. I responded with "The whole car is for sale." He wanted my phone number so he could talk me into selling just that part. I replied he could ask as many questions he liked via email. His response was that it was too hard. It would have been good if he had gone away but he kept emailing me asking if it was still for sale.
But the best one I got was on a Moke. A woman wanted to buy it for her daughter. I suggested that perhaps it wasn't the car for her. Mum barreled on,though. For the advertised price (as is where is), mum wanted me to refurbish the motor and drive train, give it a new paint job and guarantee it will be a reliable car. "Listen, lady" I said, "When you find one of those, ask if he has another, 'cause I want one."
Daughter then stormed off to the family car and mother continued to make demands.
You need to have a thick skin to deal with the great unwashed, but then, operating a business, I guess you're used to that.

We've been selling a few things on gumtree lately and 9 times out of 10 the cretins offer you half of what youve advertised it for and then want you to meet them halfway between your place and theirs so they dont have to drive so far.
So I've put my foot down and now we just ignore all offers and if they want us to travel part way to them we close the discussion down. Takes a while but we have been selling at asking price and making the buyer collect.
I'd rather take good gear to the tip than sell it to a tightarse tosser via gumtree.

I bought some stuff off Gumtree. When I went to collect it, the bloke couldn't remember what price he'd asked. So I told him. He said his internet had been closed as he was moving and he couldn't check but he was sure I was wrong. He reckoned the price was half what I'd said it was.

I wonder how many desperate people they get with there ridiculously low offers.
I recently sold a hard case spare wheel cover, normally go for $200+ I listed it for a quick sale at $180, I get offered $40. 5 simex at 90% asking 1000, get offered $400. Generally there not too fussed about the item, just want to get something for next to nothing!!
Carsales is no better, the amount of people that would try negotiate and offer over txt without even seeing the car is crazy. Selling my Wrx I got offers 10,000k less
Than what I was asking without even looking at the car. Even had one guy say that as he would put a few kms on it driving it everyday it would be worth less when he goes to sell it so could only offer me the price he would get for it once he's put 50,000 more km on it!! Err not how it works buddy.

I sold a car recently on Gumtree.
$1500 was the asking price. Guy asked for $1000 and he will pick it up.
Sight unseen!
Days later he come to inspect.
He took it for a drive, called his mechanic mate and then purchased it.
He had a 150km drive home. Car unregistered and sold AS IS.
Anyway i had to go the same way he did and seen the old car broken down on the side of the road, bonnet up and no one there.
Got a message later from the guy saying the car spat a seal and oil everywhere.
I do feel bad, but do get a giggle out of it.
Gumtree..... it is what it is.
Anything that is a good deal if often lapped up by people turning stuff instantly.
The rest is low balled pretty much as standard.
I must admit im guilty of doing that myself.
Looking for people needing a quick sale for cash.

I have to admit that as a seller I've had a pretty good run on Gumtree, probably lucky.
As a buyer though I seem to have had more than my fair share of annoyances. The pet one is ads which are still up weeks after the item has sold, why people can't remove them is beyond me, saves everyone's time.

I sold a rusty but straight HT Holden wagon for a friend of mine. I put it up on Gumtree for $800 to make sure it wouldn't hang around. The ad said "The vehicle will not leave my property until paid in full, cash or bank transfer. Delivery negotiable after agreeing on payment." The first phone caller requested me to deliver it for free to 100km away and they promised to pay me when I got there. Fortunately the second caller was genuine, paid a deposit over the counter of his local bank into my account and turned up with cash and a suitable towing equipment a few days later. That's why I rarely try to sell pile-o-crap cars, it's easier on the brain to just tow them straight to the scrappie.

most lowballers i ignore
some i play with and say sure, cash only. give them address (not my address) and never turn up.
with the shoe on the other foot. plenty of times ive seen stuff priced more than its worth, sometimes can buy it new cheaper.

I have a car on Gumtree that I was asking $20.000 for , I had an offer for $1,000 & the guy said I should be happy with that. I sent him a message back, NO!!!
I had another on Gumtree last year that I had stored a my workshop which is about 20 minutes from my house & they would arrange to view it at a certain time , I would go there but they would ring about 1 hour after arranged time to say they bought another car or just wouldn't turn up & you would not here from then again.
They also email to ash if the car has been sold & when I tell them it is still for sale then you never hear from them again.

nothing to do with Cars - but I had 25 metre of Ag pipe laying around for lord knows how long that I kept tripping over , so rather than take it down the tip I put it on Gumtree for FREE. First call - could I take it into Hobart for him (40 minutes drive). Errr ... No its free mate - he said "I'm very keen" I said well here's my address - he never bothered. I then get several messages on the phone - "please call me with details "? call them? - what details ? its 25 meter of Ag pipe and I'd posted a picture of it - its FREE - why am I calling them?
Anyway - it wasn't worth the pain so I just took the ad off and I'm still tripping over the pipe.

I had a set of 5 wheels and tyres advertised on Gumtree a couple of years ago. The advert contained lots of photos, details of the make and models of the tyres, the tyre size, and, the approximate amount of tread left on each tyre. The asking price was $500.
I get a text from a Gumtree Guy "Hey mate. Are the wheels still for sale?"
Me "Yes."
GG "What make are the tyres?" I reply with the same info on the Gumtree ad.
GG "What size are they?" I reply with the same info on the Gumtree ad.
GG "How much tread is left" I reply with the same info on the Gumtree ad.
Finally, he asks "How much are you asking?" As I was getting impatient with this idiot I replied "$550"
GG: "But the advert says $500"
Me: "I'm charging you an extra $50 for asking me questions you could have easily found the answers to yourself.
GG: "That's not fair. I'll give you $500 for them."
Me: "Sorry, they've just gone up to $600."
GG: "**** you!"
I didn't consider that to be a loss of a sale, more the loss of an idiot.
Another thing that annoys me is when you advertise something as "Pick Up Only" or "Buyer To Arrange Collection/Freight" and you get the "How much to freight to [wherever]?" FFS!! Mind you, I do explain I am willing to arrange freight once I have received full payments for the item, the cost of freight the item (I always use quotes from DHL) and the $5000 admin fee I charge for this service. :)

Yep, Brother had knackered but running old 75 horse out board motor with some good bits on it, listed as free but would be grateful for a box of cans if the "buyer" felt warranted, thought he would be helping some out. Nothing but peasants and no-hopers wanting delivery, wanting it checked out by a mechanic, the list went on.
In the end he got sick of it all and listed it again for a few hundred and it was sold in a few hours....
For me, bought and sold cars a few times and if I can avoid it wont bother selling through it again. Last one was an old ute. Was pretty explicit that I wasn't interested in swaps in the ad but first 5 calls where for a swap of some sort, thanks but no thanks, don't need your clapped out KTM. Listed it for 2k, reasonable and cheapest auto 4x4 in our area by a long shot, price was sharp as as there were some cosmetic issues but a solid little ute. Bloke came and looked, didn't really say much then turned up a few days later unannounced with $1600 in his pocket thinking he would take it then and there. Got all sooky when I said price was 2k and if that didn't suit him don't buy it, especially after leaving ciggo buts in the cab when taking it for a test drive. He paid the 2 in the end.
Had another bloke string me out for weeks on another car, we negotiated a good deal for both sides but I needed to deliver the car about 50 kays away, not a biggie, was happy to bend a bit for the right deal. Was a few days out from delivery and I rang, SMS, emailed him with no response to confirm a time that suited him on the day he wanted it. He didn't get back to me so I didn't deliver, no deposit paid, fair call in my book, figured he'd lost interest. Gave him a week after trying a few more times and then re listed the ad, up for about a week and I get SMS from the bloke bleating that I didn't deliver as I promised (you noticed?) and whats to go re-listing the car after we made a sale. I asked if he was still interested on the same terms after not responding to me for over 2 weeks, I got a very impolite "no thank you" in return and then stated he was taking me to some unheard of tribunal for breach of contract. I said "your call mate", make your next contact be through said tribunal and we'll work it out through them. Barrage of SMS with some not very nice name calling appeared on my phone for about a day (all ignored) till I just blocked his number.

Had an interesting fella a couple of weeks ago. Was selling a brand new PS4, and in spite of making the location very clear (we're about 65kms south of Brisbane CBD), had all sorts of "can you bring to location 70kms away" type requests. Really?
The best one was a guy who was driving from Ipswich to come and collect. Got a phone call to say he wasn't sure where he was going, so we made arrangements to meet at a shopping centre 25kms away (had some shopping to do anyway, so no biggie), and arranged a time.
45 mins after the appointed time, shopping done, we gave up waiting as there was no response to calls or texts. Halfway home, I got a call, saying they'd taken a wrong turn, and could I bring the PS4 to the airport?
He was somewhat aggrieved when I let him know that I was disinclined to make a 130km round trip with $25 in tolls, when he had already messed me about so much.

I once listed a Rega Planar turntable. Some guy um'd and agh'd for a few days then haggled, said he wanted it. Then when he wasn't picking it up on time I said when was he planning to collect? He wasn't sure. I said I had to go to the city. He said that I could bring it to him as I'd drive past his house.
I was commuting on a motorbike. I told him to forget it. He then pestered me for a few more hours by sms saying he really wanted it and asking why I was being like this?
I told him because he was a ****ing time waster. His last reply, "But I really need this!"

Listed it on Gumtree for $150, ten min's later started getting texts from a guy wanting to know what model number it was etc - sent me details on how to find out what exactly I had.
So I found out thanks to his information (and google) that the pump was worth in excess of $1200 second hand.
needless to say I withdrew the pump from sale, poor bastard should've driven the 35k's to check it out in person. Would have scored a bargain.

When I was living in Perth and getting ready to move up North I listed a few items on gumtree, some for sale, quite a few for free. As we lived east of Perth in the hills you get all sorts of muppets wanting you to drive it to them or meet half way. As I worked at the airport I told them they could pick them up from there when I was at work, but that was about as flexiable as I would get. When I want something off gumtree I actually will drive to them without question - thats how it works when you want something I thought
Last experiance selling a car on gumtree however has turned me off selling a car privatly for good - the story is too long to bother typing up here and I dont really feel like repeating it as it still ****es me off.

My pet hate on gumtree is people who don't turn up at the appointed time. I get chastised by my ex-wife who uses my gumtree account for pointing out their lack of manners. If people want something dropped off I quote them my time and petrol money. One lady who knew that I was busy and made a special effort to meet at appointed time, didn't show. When I finally got in contact with her it was because it was raining. I never heard from er again after my response.
I think one of the worst days of my life was taking a trailer and car full of the deceased mother-in-laws stuff to the markets in Melbourne where you pay $60 for a space and have to deal with hagglers all day. She was a bit of a hoarder. It was a Melbourne scorcher. I ended up with half the stuff back in the car that I refused to sell and gave to charity rather than sell it to someone who haggled over a dollar and then would sell it in their stall the following week.

A few years back we gutted and replaced the back garden. Part of this entailed removing a ridiculous number of old recycled bricks. Wife said give them away but I thought I might get something for them. For a couple of weeks I had them for sale on Gumtree at a pretty cheap price but got no bites.
Eventually it got to the stage where I needed to get rid of them asap (wife now very cross that I hadn't listened) so listed them as free. Anyway, a guy instantly called and said he would come over next morning. Ended up arriving in the late arvo which was already annoying. He didn't finish removing that many (being really fussy he was sorting through for perfect specimens) and so he said he'd come back next day. Guess what. He didn't and then he didn't respond to our calls.
Relisted the bricks again the next day and another guy said he would be straight over. He came with two mates and they started powering away removing them. Lo and behold a short while later original guy comes down the back of our house on his own accord and then has a go at us for giving away "his" bricks including some choice swear words. However I don't think he had counted on my half Greek wife! She more than gave it back and he fled before I had hardly had a chance to say a word myself.

I listed a BBQ on Gumtree, almost new, great price. The buyer turned up in a car! Far too small for the item, he started asking for tools to take it apart, I offered the appropriate tools. He then started shouting at his wife because he had no idea?apparently her fault!
So, I jumped in & helped dismantle the BBQ, & load it into his car... I then demanded an extra $50 for my time...
Once he paid up I gave hime a short sharp burst of how I was disgusted at how he spoke to his wife.
I do use Gumtree still, lots of idiot offers & comments. Keeps me smiling. :p

A very fitting thread for me at the moment as selling off a lot of things as we are moving. Had some classics mixed in with the mandatory lowballing. Hey I am guilty of putting in a lower offer from time to time but some people....Dam I find it hard to fathom how some people have survived longer than a week outside of their parents house.
One of my personal favourite examples of fellow gumtree folk:
I was selling my old beloved HiAce van with blown head gasket for parts and was living in Ballina.
A few hours after posting it had a torrent of offers
1am that night phone rings I answer it half asleep; WHERE IS BALLINA? (in thick middle eastern accent ... (dont care where the idiot is from, just noting that it was a very distinct voice))
X2 WHERE IS BALLINA ? Me= what the hell are you talking about? WHERE IS BALLINA? Me= ?? What? ...... in relation to what?
"IM IN SYDNEY WHERE IS BALLINA?" Me= WTF .... Its 10 hour drive north!
He hangs up
5 mins later phone rings
HOW FAR IS BALLINA FROM SYDNEY? Me= Did you just call me?
"NO" (in same thick dirka dirka) Me= Im trying to sleep here...As I said 5 mins ago its 10 hours away. He hangs up again
Get a text from a different number 5 mins later (some time after 1am) can you transport it to Sydney?
Next morning get a call from the number I got the text from. Once again no Hello "I'll give you XX (50% less than original price) if you can meet me in Coffs Harbour. Me= No way. He hangs up
Get a call an hour later from original number "I give you xx (30% of original price as my cousin has to drive all the way up in his tow truck and its not really worth the effort as it isnt running. Me = Then dont bloody do it then and stop calling me.... , He offers me $50 more and i tell him that I wouldnt sell it to him for double the original price.
he called that night a few times and I didnt answer then I finally blocked the number.
There are some very special people floating around in the gene pool still unfortunately.

Yep I hear you on that one
Was trying to get rid of a table an chairs so just put $5 on them. The following day a lady called and said she could come around immediately to pick them up, I replied that i could not as I had to be at an appointment. She said she would only be 5 mins away, so I said come around tomorrow any time but she said no as its 30 min drive for her and would be easier to do it now and gave me a spiel about being a single mother without much $ and coming from a similar upbringing of being at the rough end of the financial stick I agreed to wait for her. 10 mins later n show so i gave her a call ; "im just around the corner" and pleaded for me to wait just another 5 min once again I was a pushover but said If you not here in 5 mins im gone as Im already going to be late. Call her 10 mins later as I was getting in the car (late) and i can hear the check out lady and the cash register in the background.... "are you shopping?? "No" , Me= "I can hear the register" "Oh I stopped to use the toilet at the Tugan fruit mart" Me= they dont have a toilet there!!!, Her= "oh you dont know what its like to be poor"
Gumtree can be very educational

...in thick middle eastern accent
Was selling a car on gumtree when I get a call from a middle eastern guy - "What's the address so I can come for a look". So I give him the address., he says that's good and I ask when he is coming to make sure I will be home. He says he doesn't know when he is coming because he is buying the car for his wife but she is in hospital at the moment, doesn't know when she is getting out and he wants to wait until she is also able to have a look at it with him.
Anyway he leaves a phone number. So after a week I ring him to ask if he is still interested. He say yes but is still unsure when he can get out to look at it.
A week later I get a call from the same guy - "what's the address so I can come for a look". So I give him the address again. He says that's good and I ask when is coming to make sure I will be home. Again, he doesn't know because this time he says he is buying the car for his daughter and she is overseas but expected to be arriving in the country any day and he wants to wait until she is also able to have a look at it with him.
The first story I was inclined to believe but when a different variation of the same basic story comes out again it was clear he was just bull****ting.
I can understand he may want to waste my time but I'm buggered if I understand why he wanted to waste his own time, or just what game he was angling at.

just for something different, I had a pair of spot light for sale on here last year, and a received an offer that i accepted, Says he's on and island and only infrequently comes in, said no problem i can hold them, 3 days later a check arrives for the light's all good, a month and a half go by, and the guy is still a no show, i call him, Yeah I still want them someone should come to pick 'em up next week, no problem I say as I have already cashed the check. Anyway here we are over 8 months later and a couple of phone calls, the light are still in my garage. I don't bother to call any more as I have the money. Win for me I suppose.

I had a gable double carport on for $500 and got this text message "Hi, do you have the plans for this to submit to council? If I don't haggle on price and pay a tad more would you be able to deliver to Bunbury and install it for me?"
Even though I can lift some heavy things I am a girl, Bunbury is nearly 3 hours from Perth, it won't fit in my Defender or on the roof rack, I can't get past the third rung on a ladder, the list goes on. I keep the text message as I still look at it and shake my head in disbelief :no2: But I often wonder how much a "tad more" would have been

Idiot buyer ( WA )
That Sawtooth rim you have for sale at $400 with brand new tyre will you take $150 for it cash, and including postage to WA.
Seller ( QLD ) Tell you what I can do even better than that, I will jump on the first plane to WA and delivery to you for free, and not only that I will pay for it to be fitted to your car, and as a bonus I will pay for you serving for a year, is that a fair deal!!
Buyer, REALLY!

I sometimes wonder if those that want the address for a look, but never actually turn up, aren't actually getting their mates to drop by after dark or when you are out to quietly remove the item from your driveway or yard.
So now I don't give the actual address till I decide that the buyer is legit.
A lot of buyers are just going to flip the item anyway.

I won't even let Buyers come around to my place - I'll meet them somewhere - usually at work. Will be selling a car soon - which I'm dreading - and will do the same with that - meet them at a park or down the street until I know they are serious.

Do you sell lots of things that you "find" then😄
Whenever people want to meet at a public place I always think that it must be stolen. I was buying an iPad and the guy wanted to meet at the shops, brand new, didn't have charger, no box, didn't know if it was in contract. Thought what the heck and went and met him at woollies. The guy was as shifty as they come, I asked a few more questions and then more about its origin and where he obtained it. That is when he quickly jumped back on his mountain bike and sped off as fast as his thin legs would carry him.

Not at all, but I have a lot of stuff at my place I don't want complete strangers to see if they don't need to - even in my driveway, I'd prefer not to invite unknowns to. If they thing the gear is stolen, that's thier problem.

Rude stupid idiots are everywhere and this site has got a few. On 2 occasions I've put things up for sale at a reasonable price and the first was an ARB 3/4 length roof rack for a 110. I thought 750 bucks for something which cost over a grand 2 years previously and had little use was fair (and negotiable) but the responses were laughable, one even saying "I've only got 250 bucks will you accept that"?
In the end I cut it up and threw it out for the bulk rubbish collection.
Second incident was the 3rd row kiddy seats out of the Puma, 18 months old barely used by previous owner.
Hundred bucks just to get rid of them Apparently they were over 2 grand as an extra new!
Response from an eastern stater on here was "Send them over and I'll check them to see if they're worth it"!!!!
Where do these turkeys come from? Plus of course I had to pay the freight so he could have a look!
Others wanted me to pull the seat belts out completely as well and pay the freight to the east, all for a 100 bucks. Words nearly failed me on a few occasions.
Flogged a Prado on Carsales........ pointed out I would take a pic of the licence of anyone who came for a test...... and got told all sorts of excuses as to why I couldn't do it and why they wouldn't even produce a licence. But I waited and waited and watched heads appear around our caravan (security cameras) from prospective buyers as they had a quick peek then buggered off.
More good nick Deafener stuff being got rid of soon and it won't be put on here for a start. :p
Or maybe I'll wait for the garbos again..... :D

I wanted to buy something on Gumtree (for the defender) on gumtree the other day; a window advertised for $60. I sent a message and said I was keen on the item, and asked when I could collect. Got a reply a few hours later saying they actually wanted $180 for it! Idiots.

Why weren't you in nsw? :D
I'd have paid at least $400 for the rack as I paid that for a seconds rhino alloy 2m ,and back before I got the rear bench seats would have offered another $150 over the $100 for the seats and belts! The reason some ask for belts is LR charge lots for them and to get it engineering they usually like factory.
Seriously beside here look at Facebook LR sales sites or 4wd sites focused on wa as at least you have a clue who they are.

Had another top notch gumtree fellow contact me this week. First message was to offer me $20 for something listed for $100. As I was in a good mood I sent him an unreasonably friendly reply of rejecting his gracious offer of 20% of the asking price. Since then he has sent me a running commentary of critiquing my other adds and any other items short comings. I think the little gumnut needs a friend .... Or some advanced clinical help. For some reason I am getting way to much amusement out of his messages.

You do get some sellers who are somewhat unrealistic in their ads and pricing as well though.
I found a set of wheels and tyres on Gumtree that were exactly what I was looking for, but for price, they were just listed as "negotiable". So I sent him a message saying I was very interested, but what was he thinking on price? (I was thinking $1000, for a set of OEM wheels, with decent, but not brand new tyres).
His answer? Well the wheels cost $700 each from the dealer...the tyres cost $400 each...and overall, he wanted several thousand dollars.
So I sent him a very polite note saying that was a little more than I expected, that I would have been a buyer at $1000, but wishing him luck with his sale.
He hasn't sold them yet. :D

I know a bloke like that at my rifle range. I decided to try to shoot on the ground and bought a piece of carpet to lie down on. He found it painful so he went back to his bench. A couple of years later we get a new member and he needs a mat to lie on. This person brings in his dirty used carpet with the original sales docket (90 bucks as he bought a big piece and cut it to the size he needed) and asks the nube for 80 bucks for the dirty used piece of carpet. What was amazing is this bloke honestly could not see the problem even when we slowly tried to explain to him that he was over priced. He never did understand and the nube went out and bought his own..

The add that I was talking about was a surfboard that was $670 new and ones in the same condition go for aprox 200-300 but put it on cheaply for $100 as trying to clear a heap of things before we take off up the cape. But yes there are some very optimistic sellers around.

I am in the unfortunate station where my ex-wife uses my Gumtree account on my old iPad so I get to deal with the lunatics because they have my phone number. She is currently trying to sell some old Oak dining chairs for $10 each. Restored they would be very valuable and if I had the time and space I would buy them. She never puts negotiable and yet you always get "I would like to offer" Offer all you want sunshine the price is what it is. I get in trouble because I respond on my mobile, sometimes tersely. These chairs are in a poor state and the add clearly states that and yet I just had a phone call asking if they were in good condition. The caller was shocked when I said "No". I then asked if they had actually read the add. It would appear that they still want to buy them.
