Hi, I have just bought a Perentie. I have looked at insurance companies, the only ones which seem to be willing to insure it are just cars and shannons (whom I did not talk to because I was cut off prematurely). Has anybody any other recommendations? Neither of these seem to have exceptional reviews, I am leaning towards Just cars if that's all that is available. I am in SA.

Thanks

Jon

Thanks, but I suspect they do not cover cars in SA?

I use Shannons for all my classics - they do agreed value, you get first right of refusal on the wreck if it's written off and their rates are quite good. They are very easy to deal with.

same for me, I have 12 cars with Shannons - wouldn't go anywhere else, once you get to 10 you become a Platinum member and get better rates - something to aim for!

OK thanks everyone. But what are they like when you make a claim? I am currently having real issues with my income protection insurance not paying up (look at commcare) and consequently am looking at that aspect pretty closely...

Shannons here too. Haven't had a claim except for windscreen glass and that was easy.

I haven't had to claim either, but I know someone that has had to and said they paid up without issue. But I know second hand info like this isn't the best. I'm always a bit sceptical of a sentence that begins 'A friend of a friend of mine said...' :D

I'm in SA and with Shannons. No claim experience fortunately.

I use NRMA Vintage and Veteran (mines over 25 years), they are good... but not sure who covers SA.

Thanks. Looked at the NRMA website, picked 'SA' which redirected me to the SGIC website...trouble is I have already called them. They wouldn't cover me unless I used it for less than 3 days/week, it was kept under cover, and I didn't drive it off road. Strange. But they were cheap. Guess they were really trying to say don't drive it at all.

I tried a few places but just last week I went with Shannons for for '86 County. They were the only sensible option IMO.

Search head on collision, for more information with the issues I had with my claim with Shannons- but in the end they were the only ones to insure modified, off roader (some policies don't cover you off road), and at agreed value but they wouldn't give me more than 20k

The most reasonable company that I have found recently is NRMA Classic. The RFSV is not on the standard insurance company (eg. GIO, NRMA) lists and they would not cover it - one even telling me that such a vehicle definitely has never been manufactured and therefore does not exist!

However, NRMA Classic were willing to offer full comprehensive at a very reasonable price :) . So they've got a least one RFSV on their books and I think that, on renewal of my 3 other GIO comprehensive policies that I will go to NRMA Classic.

Jonnooh,Im insured with RAA,with a value of $12000(I think). The premium for my GS is $394 PA.As with most companies their auto data entering doesnt have a correct place for a Perentie,ie 3.9ltr diesal motor automatically comes up as 5 speed.I spoke to a lady called Debra and explained what I have and she put notes into the system that will cover me should the worst happen.Due to the small number of these on the road, a specific catagory has not been made for perentie vehicles, they(most insurers)use the closest description available in their systems.I am keen to hear about other peoples experiences with their insurance companies.Cheers Hallsy.

Thanks Hallsy. I had tried the RAA and they had to speak to whomever deals with out of the ordinary cars. They called me back and said they couldn't cover it because of the camo paintwork. I've no idea how this affects their risk. I do find it odd they would cover yours... presumably it is just an ad hoc decision depending on who is on for the day! Perhaps I should try calling them again explaining they are insuring someone with the same car......!

I was with racv veteran and vintage for 12 months until one of their staff pointed out that i was completely unisured as soon as i was on an unsealed road. My fault for not reading the pds, but i would of hoped that with 2 land rovers both set up to be used as they were built for they may have explained that earlier. They then tried to forward me on to regular racv, and the highest agreed value they could give me on the perentie was about 8k (despite every attempt to explain that it wasn't a regular 110 etc etc). I then rang shannons, who had no problem recognizing it as a perentie and gave me 18k agreed with no argument after i explained the work done to it. After the "head on collision" ordeal i hope i never have to make a claim, but at least i know that i am actually covered should the worst happen. Insurance; worst part about owning a perentie

Hmm,
Just rang AAMI and RACQ. They must use the same valuation system, both would only over it for $8060.
RACQ wanted $455 a year, which isn't too bad for where I live (Bardon, QLD) but obviously that value is unacceptable.

Just Car does them as well.

Interesting reading the online reviews for Just Car and Shannons.

Just Cars older reviews are terrible, last 18 months seem quite positive.

Shannons is the reverse. Last 2 years have consistently been rated terrible.
A fellow owner here had a pretty bad experience with them.

Just cars was $200 cheaper than shannons with the same value (15k)

NRMA will do it.

Message from customer: Hi.
I have an ex-army land rover 110. I have tried using your call centre a number of times to find out if
you will insure it. However the consultants have gotten it wrong 3 times now.

This is the vehicle that I have
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Rover_Perentie

specifically a 1989 4x4. Truck, Utility, Lightweight, Winch, MC2 (314 Vehicles) is the specific designation.

Can you insure this type of vehicle?

Dear Chris

Thank you for your recent email in relation to insuring the 1989 Land Rover Perentie.
We can confirm the closest model we were able to locate to this vehicle was a 1989 Land Rover One Ten.
For the utility where the one tray folds down at the rear end of the vehicle, there are 2 different types:
1) 1989 Land Rover One Ten with 39cc's and
2) 1989 Land Rover One Ten, equipment model MO with 28cc's.
For a truck where the 3 sides fold down there is a:

1) normal 1989 Land Rover One Ten 39cc vehicle or a
2) 1989 Land Rover One Ten 6x6 39cc vehicle.
The following is the maximum we can insure these vehicle for under an agreed value policy.
$8,060 - normal 1989 Land Rover One Ten 39cc vehicle
$8,060 - 1989 Land Rover One Ten 6x6 39cc vehicle.
$8,060 - 1989 Land Rover One Ten, equipment model MO with 28cc's

I've sent them a reply asking her to clarify what she is talking about with those cc's .
It took them 5 days to respond to the original e-mail, still waiting on a response from
my request for more info.

gives you a cheap option, beware no choice of repairer though.

Can't wrap Shannon's enough. Have an 88 Perentie, agreed value for heaps, and policy went down $200 this year, due to restricted use.
Had a D2 written off 2 yrs ago, they were quick with the claim, no probs, and offered the wreck back at cheap $.
They knew what a Perentie was, and happily insure it for good agreed value.
I've had P76s and other non mainstream classics insured with them, and never had an issue.

For what it its worth I eventually had a long discussion with the RAA. They wanted pictures of the car, seemed happy with it (actually said it was one of the best ones they've seen, thought that's probably only because it was clean). Anyway they insured it as a County, with a $2000 'custom paint' add on. Agreed value of $15000 reviewed in a years time, and about $430 premium per year. Very pleased as they have a good name and this is half the price I am now paying.....

Interesting.

Since im looking at purchasing, ive tried a few places,
rang RACQ today and they wont touch it, even spoke to the unique cars section. All they could offer was third party.

Shannons wont give me an agreed value and will only offer to insure the purchase value. they quoted $734 for a value of $12'000

Will try just cars tomorrow and see what hey can do

As I mentioned in a previous post I recently made a claim for broken glass with Shannons.
Fixed in under 3 hours. Easy to deal with.

I've several bikes and Landric (the perentie) with Shannons, they were with NRMA vintage and veteran previously.
No claim history, but happy with the service.
