View Full Version : Tempted: Tdi Vs Td5

The horns of a dilemma or the devil I know:
Now I “love” my Disco and after 7 years (itch?) I am beginning to understand her (as best as one can understand the female of the species). She is simple and robust but she won’t last forever.
I have heard of a 2000 auto Td5 D2 with about 100,000km on road on the clock. The price is tempting. Chipped and serviced by a reputable mob.
With a loan and if I can sell my current English Mistress I might have enough left over for the necessary accessories: CDL actuation, decent tyres, suspension mods, snorkel etc etc.
What should I do: remain faithful to the cause or do the bungee jump?

Not being into Discos for some time now
What mods would be interchangable??
Could keep the overall c/over price down

Keep the old girl and give me the address of the TD5 as I have been looking for one to buy myself.
Seriously, if you decide not to buy it, I am very interested.

Well the path of sense would be to keep the Tdi300 for another few years and save up for a D3.
But I'm fickle, I've never owned any car longer than three years.
- Subaru 1800 bought it for nothing planning on wrecking when rego ran out and I fell in love.
Cheeers,
Simon.

Hi Discowhite
My TD5 aint no V8,but for a diesel it flies.OK its possibly chipped, but when it comes to the bowser it definately is no V8.A diesel with reasonable grunt beats the uneconomy of a V8 anytime.PS I love V8's,got a SER3 with a Falcon V8 and auto sitting in my shed waiting for me to get stuck into and finished.

Go the TD5 Mahn, you have a company car, so paying for fuel and a loan isnt an issue. Go for it. Matt

keep the old disco (you know here faults and no electronics to stuff up) and fit a HS2.8 :?
more power and torque than a TD5 8)
all new so no repairs for years style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
jase
PS I might be a little biased i'm importing 2.8s style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif but they are a great engine 8)

Mahn, go the TD5.. leaves the Tdi for dead in so many aspects. I always find it funny how people will come up with the old story of rather going for older technology because there are too many "electrics" that can go wrong ... as if we spend our lives out in the bush. The reality is most of us will only do one big trip a year and the odd weekend trip ... and like I've said before .. Australia is a huge country but within it's borders you will always be in the relatively "safety" of a first world country so there is no reason no to embrace new technology.
Also, I've never heard of TD5's breaking down or causing problems in the bush .. no more than Tdi's for that matter so there is no justification not to go TD5.
...I'll get off the Soapbox now :?

Any case ... the day of 4WD's with "no electrics" are well and truly over ... get used to it or stay behind!
What he said. Thats about it Henry, we can hate electrics all we like, but we are stuck with them. Matt

What makes me wonder about the whole electrics vs no electrics debate, aside from the wading issues is why not just take a pack of spares?
There's a pretty strong history of take away spares kits that you can return to whoever if you don't use them on the trip.
Why not the same with abs units etc. If they're just a unit that plugs in, they'll take up almost no space and sealed in a bag they're not going to get any wear.
Cheers
Simon.

I think it's more of finding people who know what there doing than getting spares for the TD5 or anything modern for that matter !!!
Also doesn't help when you need a expensive machine just to reset fault codes... don't get me wrong though, I'll buy a TD5 tomorrow if I had the spare cash style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

The discussion is interesting style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif .
If something wears out on my "pre-luddite" Disco then the fixes are simple and the cost of parts are now cheapish. Bits of wire and cable tie technology.
I am reluctant to throw myself back into the hands of wallet grasping service centres. Opening the bonnet to reveal an acre of plastic coveralls and black box mystery is a threshold to cross. To be told to limp home is reassuring but where is home and how long will I have to limp?
I will immerse myself in the challenge of replacing a buggered front uni joint and idler bearing this weekend.
The intricacies of personal loans and the cost of expert services will be contemplated.
