:?: Bought a trailer plug the other day and was just wondering if I can there are special existing wires for trailers at a Defender Td5 I can connect the plug to or if I connect this plug to the normal lights (rear lights, break lights, indicator lights).

Thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Sorry mate, the factory one you just have to tap into the existing light wires to the back of the car style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

I think there is a special plug tucked into the rear RH quarter panel that the factory harness plugs into, if you are wiring it up yourself then you may have to remove the plug, (probably a factory "special" you can't get anywhere), and connect up by solder and shrink sleeve. Other than that get the factory harness and pay through the nose.

Mate, I've got a factory towbar and wiring instructions down stairs. There isn't a plug, you have to tap into the existing wiring style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif

Richard, I can confirm, there is no special plug. I was actually just worried about the indicator lights. Because two more lights are drawing energy I thought that the lights would flash a lot slower than usual.
This came into my mind because if you have a broken indicator light the indicators are going a lot faster.
But anyway, will tab into the existing wires
cheers Daniel

If you reduce the load, ie remove a lamp or have one fail they will flash faster. If you have the trailer tell tale lamp fitted in your car, most do, it will flash once and then stop without the trailer attached. With the extra lamps on the trailer it will flash with the indicator lamps and indicate the trailer lamps are functioning correctly. If you have a blown trailer idicator lamp, or LED's fitted to the trailer the tell tale will not operate as the load is not increased.
All the wiring on my Defender is clustered behind the rear right hand wheel.

I stand corrected, in fact it was on my Disco that I was told it was on......will have to have a look.

The Disco does have a special plug behind the right rear tail lamp cluster.
I had to cut mine off because they don't sell the plugs. You need to buy the towing kit.

Okeydokey, I had another look under my LR and found the socket (part # YPC114850) I was looking for. Just next to the fuel tank on the driver's side.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2006/01/42.jpg

I do not know how much the appropriate plug (part # PC114860) will cost. I will just cut off the socket and extend the wires to my aftermarket trailer plug.

As far as I could figure it out this is the colour coding:
[list]Grey/Black: Left Indicator
Red/Black: Left Light
Grey/White: Right Indicator
Red/Orange: Right Light
Grey/Purple: Break Lights
Purple: +
Grey/Brown: Reversing Light
Red/Yellow: Fog Light
Black: Earth[list]

I'm really confused. I just had a look in exactly the same place as in your photo... definately no plug. Maybe they dropped them from later models, and my original information was correct ? :?: :?:

Mine is a td5 2001 model and as far as I could find out the td5 2000 models also had this plug.

Hi I strip and rebuild defenders as part of my job and havnt come accross a late defender without this plug. they are usually as per photo on the previous post but on occasions are tucked up behind the body support that goes over the filler neck. although all the vehicles I work on are UK or German spec I wouldnt have thought they would change it for australia. Landrover seem to keep everything as a standard

Mine has the plug and stuff , but had a look, can't find the finger, is that some sort of aftermarket accesorry. Looks like a big finger how does it stay so clean under a dirty car??? https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

A question on the trailer tell tale lamp. I have a (newly aquired) 2000 TD5 disco, and the tell tail lamp flashes when ever the direction lamps do, even with out a trailer on. Is there a quick fix or somewhere to start looking?

It probably means that the lamps in your bullbar have bulbs that are too big https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Yes my 2001 discovery does the same. My previous 1997 defender did this but only after I had the bull bar fitted.

It's something to do with the load on the indicator circuit, nothing to worry about. I guess Rover put the dash light there to let us know that we are towing a trailer - as if we don't know anyway

how its supposed to work is......
when you hook up the trailer....the extra load from the indicators on the
trailer will cause the light to flash.....

if one of the bulbs on the trailer is blown....there will not be enough current
draw to cause the warning light to flash.....
hence letting you know you have a globe out on the trailer.....

the extra globes which are fitted to the bullbar do exactly the same thing....

no i dont have one of them.....

my towbar was fitted by arb.....i doubt they would have used the genuine harness....

when we used to fit towbars at work....we didnt use the genuine harness...
we used to just splice off the tail lights....

the only towbars that came with the genuine harness were the genuine land rover ones....
not many people were willing to pay one and a half times the price for a genuine....

infact i dont think any of the bull bars were genuine either....
nothing was stamped with the land rover oval.....
they may have been purchased by the dealership from the same manufacturer.....
but they certainly didnt come from LRA.....

Yeah... that's the bit I don't understand. I bought a genuine towbar because it was cheaper, and in the instructions it says to splice the wires off the lights. It even includes the little clips to tap in ?? Crazy 8O

Looking under the back tub of my 130, on the drivers side under the fuel cap there is what looks like a plug as described above to fit a trailer plug. This is a 1999 TD5 if that helps.

As the vehicle is bought second hand it has two cables already feeding the trailer plug, one looks like it is running off the back of the drivers side rear lights while the other cable seems to come almost all the way to the front of the vehicle. When I lost following it, it seemed to be under the drivers seat not heading to the battery box - any idea where this would be going?

Has anyone had any luck with buying a genuine plug or hot wiring from the existing plug?

My rig has 2 trailer plugs (big one and little one) both just spliced into the tail lights, and i have had no drama's, just got the single flash of the trailer light without a trailer and continuos flash when trailer fitted. Pretty good system imho.

I think you mean YPC114860 - the Male connector that is fitted on the Land Rover 12N kit? (same as the Discovery II 12N kit)

It's a Sumitomo DL Sealed Series 090/187 (2.3/4.8mm) HYBRID 9-way Male Housing, Sumitomo Part No. - 6195-0173

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2011/08/1326.jpg

You will also need 7 x 090(2.3mm) and 2 x 187(4.8mm) Male Terminals, with the appropriate Wire Seals for each Terminal, and 2 x 090 Cavity Plugs for the two unused ways.

The two unused ways are not used by the 12N connection, they provide a Reverse Light feed (GN) and a Permanent Live (PN), which are used by the 12S socket.

The Land Rover 12S kit has the Green and Yellow wires pre-terminated with the correct terminals and seals.

The cavity plugs are removed from YPC114860 and these pre-terminated wires are plugged-in.

A list of Sumitomo part numbers for 090 and 187 Male Terminals, Wire Seals and Cavity Plugs to fit 6195-0173 can be found here -

The corresponding Female connector housing YPC114850, fitted to the vehicle's wiring loom, is Sumitomo part number - 6195-0170

The Sumitomo DL Sealed Series connectors Catalogue can be downloaded, here - http://swsct.sws.co.jp/components/series/pdf/dls.pdf

If you find a supplier for small quantites of these, I'd be interested to know.
