I need to install a second battery and have decided to go with a rear bin install. Just wanted to ask if anyone can recommend what side to place the battery LHS or RHS? Mine is a 7 seater so I need to get a rear bin from a 5 seater either LHS or RHS to do the install. Thanks.

I used to have this in my previous d2 i fitted it on the rhs so that you only run the wiring down the same side as the main

Do you have dual air conditioning on your 7 seater, as the evaporator and air con fittings are on the left side behind of that panel. If so you won't be able to use the left side.

It wasn't. ;)
Mine never had it, and I had the "Town Classic" version of the D2a

I'd be considering the left side, to put the weight opposite the driver and its marginally easier to get to with the door open. Agree though that the cable run would be shorter and simpler for the drivers side.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to go with a RHS install. My car is a D2a classic, no aircon in the rear.

I am also abt to fit a slimline Kickass 120AH deep cycle battery into the rear RH bin.
Can anyone advise the best route to supply power to the battery in the RH rear bin? I am assuming power is run from the VRS (mounted next to the front battery) along the top of chassis rail toward the rear, where is the best place to enter the rear of the body without any major modifications ... ie: are there any grommets available in this area?
Secondly, can anyone advise the best method of securing the battery in this location.

Had a quick look - job is easy.
Drilled a hole in the floorpan just behind the bin, took the cable (through inserted grommet) into the rear vent area then drilled a hole into the bin - job all done.

Mine is mounted on the LHS underneath my drawer wing because that's where the cable's and fusebox and everything was already run to when I bought the car!

There is already a big rubber grommet in the side between the bin and the side panel if you do it in the RHS.

Thanks for the info Slunnie, but have already done the job through the floor. :D

I'm guessing that mounting a battery in this area that the battery is not lead acid.
If it is how are you dealing with the vented hydrogen?
What type of battery is best for this location as it seems ideal to me for running fridges etc.
I think mine will be stated above, under draw wing.
Cheers

Ray,
I installed a Kickass 120ah deep cycle sealed AGM battery - slim line fits neatly inside the bin with room for a bracket to the floor pan and padding around the sides.:D

Thanks I'll look into those. I'll get the draws done first then I'll be able to see exactly what I have.

Ray,
These are sold by "Australian Direct" (australiandirect.com.au).
They are located on the Sunshine Coast but will ship anywhere. Can vouch for their batteries as I have one in my boat powering a Minnkota 55lb electric motor - can run it for 8-10 hrs no problem in the last 2 years !!(and come with a 5yr pro-rata guarantee:):)

I have one of those Kickass batteries mounted in the space behind the drawers in the back. Seems excellent so far. Power runs from the passenger's seat under the floor and up through a hole in floor (with a grommet, of course).

Hi Ray and there are NO GAS SEALED lead acid batteries, AGM or otherwise, so you can use any form of lead acid battery in that location.
While most people do not mount their battery in a plastic battery box, no matter what type it is, in the wrong circumstances, a battery can be caused to spill or spew electrolyte.
As for hydrogen generating inside a cab. This is not a problem because you can not produce enough hydrogen from a battery for it to become dangerous.

Another +1 for the RH bin.
I found that 2 6 guage cables fit perfectly into the gap between the carpet and door seal that is revealed once you unscrew the little plate that holds the carpet down.
Can run the cables through a grommet in the firewall, through to the little channel mentioned above and then just drill a hole in the side of the bin for the cables to come through.
