View Full Version : Advice sort for buying a D2 at Auction

So I know of a D2 coming up for Auction very soon. The last time I looked at it, it was locked but it has since been moved do I don't know now. I am kicking myself for not taking a picture of the VIN at the time.
I know it's a V8 petrol, it's a manual (the part I really want). The interior has seen much better days and the back was full of what looked like cheap camping gear that looked like it was ready for the rubbish tip.
The biggest problems I see myself having is I know it won't come with any keys unless there is a key inside the vehicle somewhere (glove box maybe). I know I can get a code from the VIN to get one cut and I can some how enter an emergency code to start it.
I'm not too concerned about much else other than the gearbox but I'd like to get the engine running just so I can drive it around the paddock and make sure the gearbox is in fact good rather than go to the trouble of doing the conversion and driving out the driveway only to find 5th gear has had the possum.
I'm hoping that I can flog off other stuff cheap just to make back the dollars it costs for me to buy it. Again driving it will mean I can confirm that the transfer case is working as it should all be it a small test. I think if I can confirm they are operatable I could get $250 - $300 for the LT230 and then similar each for the front and rear axles complete and that would near pay for the vehicle. I haven't searched at all but doubt petrol V8 engines are worth much. I might just build an engine stand and keep it to scare the neighbours (LOL). If I can get myself back to where I started $$ wise, I'll be able to put a new clutch and the like in.
Happy Days.

Joel, isnt yours a TD5? I think the spigot shaft on the V8 gearbox is longer, or is it vice versa? I am pretty sure the boxs are different some how. Would pay to check. But sounds a good plan :)

Bugger, can I change the spigot shaft?

Oh, I just found I had already been told the spigot shaft and bell housing have different part numbers.
I'm still not sure on the exact difference.

Maybe I can just use a custom spigot bearing and a V8 clutch?

Because changing the input shaft is not an option at $400.

So the part numbers that start with FTC seem to be for a short bell housing R380 for early LT77 replacements.
Part numbers that start with TUD for the Spigot shaft seem to be for the normal length bell housing. The TD5 being different to the V8 bell housing. I still haven't worked out if they are different length or just different tooth count. I'm thinking 21 tooth for the V8 and 22 tooth for the TD5.

Joel,
Other than the 5th gear ratio, I thought gearbox in the D2 was the same. The R380 in the Range Rover is different to the Discovery.
The bell housing, clutch, and flywheel are all different. Not sure about the master cylinder but I believe the slave cylinder is the same.

Thanks Dave,
It's hard to sift through all the info. So many people talk about fitting the R380 in place of the LT77 so there are a heap of combinations.
I think you are right that the V8 Disco 2 and the TD5 Disco 2 have the same input/spigot shaft. Just the 5th gear ratio is different.
I should be right for a Bell Housing as I know of a guy who has gone the other way and changed his Manual for an Auto. If this all gets too hard I might just get the whole package from him. I think it would be easier to have a vehicle sitting side by side.
I think I'll be best of to fit a new fly wheel and clutch at least at the same time of fitting.
Happy Days.

Joel if you have Facebook there is a WA Discovery 4x4 group https://m.facebook.com/groups/849534608404112 it's possible that someone will already have a R380 box out and maybe for sale, so could measure for you.

I can't count my chickens yet, mate. I'm still inconclusive. There is definitely 4 different part numbers for spigot shafts and I've seen multiple different lengths posted around the web.
I still planing on buy it and see what turns out.
The current word is the Auction people haven't been able to unlock the doors so I'm pretty sure the back will still be full of the camping gear ready for the tip.
I have the VIN now though so I'll be able to find out a bit. I know it has SLS by the obvious sagged back end.

I love a good auto box like my DSG Skoda but the slush torque converter in the Disco drives me mad. I hate the whole bit of accelerating without a change in engine revs. I have no experience but I have read many a time that a lower stall torque converter will make the Disco Auto much more a pleasure to drive. I don't know if something is wrong with mine as it's been like it still is since I have had it. As I accelerate, the engine revs just dictate the rate of acceleration and the gearbox does the accelerating. If I want to be saving some fuel and taking off at a reasonable rate, I can hold the accelerator in one place to hold the engine RPM about 2500rpm and the gearbox does all the accelerating. If I want to get away a bit quicker, I'll hold it at 3000rpm. The only time the engine revs tend to change with the gears is if I am really planting it and reving it out to near 4000rpm which I very rarely do.
I run a TD5inside map with my TD5 and I believe there will be plenty of power down low to get me off the line. Not that I can really tell with the auto as nothing starts to happed to so high in the rev range.

Have you tried "Manual" and change the gears yourself?

"Manual" is only an option in low range. Using the stick to hold gears doesn't make any difference. My shift points are the same as the ECU. It's the change that's the problem. By the time to torque converter stops slipping it's time to change to the next gear. Then it slips heaps again. I've driven others that were the same. I just don't like torque converter autos.

I didn't know that about the autobox. I have a manual. Manual is the only option high or low range for a manual!
Don't all auto boxes have torque converters?

DSGs are an auto box with a clutch. The clutch is controlled by a computer, not a person.

Just a little better, 😁 they do take some getting used to. You get the driving feel of a manual with the connection between throttle and drive with lightning fast perfect gear changes everytime. You can leave itin.auto for city driving or use manual for spirited driving without the disconnected feel of a torque converter. .

just a bit of fun:
Automatics are for pussies, women and grandparents.
i got my v8 d2 at auction.
even came with a mechanics report/NRMA report giving it a good bill of health.
turned out to be a lemon.
main reason i got it was for the mods it had.

It's funny but shifting an auto manually feels odd to me whether its a traditional auto or paddles or + - stick. it just never has the manual feel no matter which slush box it is. There is something about shifting gears in a manual which makes the drive so much more enjoyable. You are a part of the vehicle and an LR feels so much fun. I know most people won't agree BUT whilst most people have driven a manual most people have not driven an LR in manual form and its a different experience.

X2 Could not have said it better .
I have only ever owned a manual in a 4wd for more reasons than the feel .
I know auto technology also the electrickery part of things has advanced so much in the last few years for the better .
I still prefer my manual 4wd  Maybe im stubborn maybe im a dinosaur maybe im stuck in my ways .
I have always prefered manuals in all my cars and will do till the day i can no longer drive .
It mainly in my opinion has more control over the drive for slowing down whether in traffic or 4wdriving you get the in control feeling .
Anyway some like autos for their personal reason`s and some like manual`s that is life ;)
