On the way to mum and dads on monday we came across a Hyundai Getz stuck in a ditch, dont know how they got there, the road was as straight as (it was raining though), there were already half a dozen people stopped helping, they were trying to push it out, with no luck. I pulled up and asked if anyone had a strap/rope or something (mine was at home in the wash) luckily there was a guy on the scene with a strap, hooked it onto the front and second later the releived couple were back on the road, the farmers fence was a write off, and the back panels of the car were quite smashed in but it was all cosmetic. So, who said 4wders were inconsiderate, non-community minded people. Matt

you said your strap was in the wash :?:
This brings up an interesting topic:
How do you (everyone) clean your snatch strap ( nop being rude please style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif )
I suppose you have to take into account, somehow, that when stretched the starp may have got sand/dirt in between the fibres ?
Whats the best / easiest method ?

First you have to make a rack.
Make it strong and waterproof, I'm thinking stainless. Also has to be expandable.
wrap the strap around the rack.
Now you need a frame around that and a couple of ratchet straps to put the snatch strap under tension.
Then either soak or hit with the karcher.

No, better
Put a really big hook in the wall of the house. Bury it deep.
Attach the strap to the wall and the Landy.
Stretch
Karcher.
Rebuild wall.

Or do what i do.........
When it is dirty and full of grit and writen off.... Throw it out and spend the $60 odd dollars on a new one.....
Let me see now......
$60 for a new strap or keep using one that might be faulty and could cause personal or vehicle injury when it breaks....
What is a back window worth??
What is a trip to the Horsepiddle worth??
I thought i was tight..... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

Of course I;d throw out a buggered strap, but they aren't buggered after just one use !! Mate I was just asking so I know how best to do it. Tips like D-Zook saying dry it flat, and can be done in the washer was what I was looking for. Thanks D_Zook. As for you Clarkie
I hope that didn't come across as vitriolic. It wasn't meant to.

I came across one a few years back on a bend near my house. The were in a ditch, the driver`s father had arrived to help but to no avail (he was in a car).
So I hooked up the Rangie and pulled him out. Then I told him to get going as I`d just passed the police who had someone pulled up a bit further back. If the cops had come across him in the ditch, he`d have been booked for neg driving.
(Sorry about the backward accents instead of apostrophes. The keyboard driver on this computer has mapped the non-alphanumeric keys really weirdly and I can`t find the apostrophe).

I always have the strap in the car, but Murphy's law would state that the only time i would need it when not off road is when i left it in the washing machine.
Welcome back Jason, WTF have you been, and more importantly WTF were you on the weekend? Matt

Best way to clean exactly like abseiling ropes after a play in a muddy cave,......bath of warm water, submerge, liberal sprinkling of Lux Pure Soap Flakes (and only this brand), agitate strap by hand a number of times to loosen dirt, let soak a while more (as long as you like) then thoroughly rinse a number of times in cold water to get soap out thoroughly.
Mine has been washed now many many times still looks white and is ten years old, but the latter probably due to quality bought at the time.
Cheers

OK just read about cleaning the straps with interest. What is the best way to clean the plasma rope in my winch??
I beleive this is the biggest killer for the rope.

I'd back the Lux Pure Soap Flakes method as above exactly as described to make sure. Only pure soap flakes not detrimental to ropes that you hang your life on over a cliff face, I'd trust the same method to clean a winch rope properly.
This method was only approaved method by Scout Association on all abseiling ropes after each use to properly clean any grit from fibres on ropes. I was a qualified Caving/Abseiling senior instructor for many years without incident (snapping ropes) style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif
