Couple of questions on accessories for the D4 if I may.
Does anyone have the original RAI here in Melb that I can have a look at? I'm afraid I don't like the look of the Safari unit and would prefer the original. I know it's not waterproof, but I'm sure this can be fixed from what I've read on here, and have discussed this with both LR and OL, it seems I "may" be able to get it delt with at the dealer (?).
Another question,, with a second tank fitted, does anybody know if it's possible to change the "total litre" value in the computer to allow for this? Which means if you fill both tanks (this is the gravity fed unit) it would give the fuel total of approx 160lts so the car can work out how far you have to travel on that instead of the 70lts.
Hope that makes sense. I generally always fill my tank to the top unless I'm in a hurry for work or something, so I'd prefer this option, but I may also see what can be done about having a secondary gauge fitted.

I asked about this some time ago and was told that it can't be done.
You soon get used to having the fuel gauge work on only the main tank though - it has never bothered me. I just drive until the gauge starts to move from "full" and know that I have roughly 80 litres remaining from then, which is still enough range to get you pretty much anywhere. Sometimes I set one of the trip meters to zero when I fill up - range can be anywhere between 900 - 1000km on mine before the fuel gauge starts to move. :D
Best run I ever did with both tanks was from Ceduna to Port Augusta - but had a good stiff tail wind all the way across the paddock that trip. ;)
I have found that roof rack loading and the head winds that you usually encounter across the paddock (by Murphy's law) will usually reduce that range by quite a bit - and my normal fuelling stops are top-up at Norseman and fill at Ceduna.

The absolute, must have accessory you need that should be standard equipment in a D4.

A nice compact unit like this works well in the Disco. Fits nicely in one of the cup holders .................... https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

The ones that they lug around in the Defenders are more flexible in what they can do, but you have to pull over and get out of the vehicle to make your coffee. They're a bugger in the rain. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Some people I know even have a microwave fitted in the back of their Defender. Don't think I'd recommend this in a D4. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I watched a flick with a D4 that had the LR snorkel, I think this is the way I'll go. I quite like it.
Are you nearly ready for a run Mark :D Its only ohhh about 2.5 months away yet

I can't help you with the air intake.... as mine is Safari.... and my long range tank isn't gravity feed either :P
But yell out if you have any other queries I may be able to answer..

It would be interesting to know if the LR raised intake adds much to wind noise.. as the Safari one did make a noticeable difference......
But with all the other stuff on mine, I'm happy to live with it....

Can't help much but i just finished Gordons course on Sunday and can't wait to do another. His knowledge of the terrain response and how each individual setting effects gear changes on top of traction control harshness etc and when each should be used is priceless.
There's no way i walked in expecting to use 3 different TR settings all whilst on sand...

You can seal up the LR unit to make it a proper snorkel. Sniegy knows someone who supplies a lot in Melb to do it.
The decider for me - Safari requires the inside panel to be cut... Not for me [emoji41] I'm not averse to hacking into the vehicle where appropriate, but I'm not keen to do that for a Snorkel when the LR RAI bolts without damage.

No rock crawl Dan, too aggresive. Used Gravel/Grass, Sand and off(where before i thought we would need it therefor i was probably over working the car for no reason.
Can't recommend it highly enough Dan. There's no way i could have learnt so much in such a little time space without Gordons well structured course. By choosing the right settings with correct throttle application you transform the vehicle's capabilities ten fold.

$800 difference for something that is essentially a piece of plastic seems a stretch. Yes there's obviously potential fitment issues etc but still!

Agree with that. Would be interested to hear from someone who has done this. I quite like the look of the LR RAI too but only if it's sealed...

I had a D3 with a LR RAI and now a D4 with a Safari snorkel. With the driver's window up, there is very little noise with either.
The RAI needs the rubber elbow that goes from the inner guard into the airbox, to be sealed. There are a series of holes in the bottom of that section.
As Tombie says, the inner guard has to be cut to install the Safari one. I have photos from my install here: DISCO3.CO.UK Photo Gallery - Safari Snorkel Install (http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=22671)
Having done it once, I would suggest that you get the Safari install done by someone... anyone but yourself! The scars on my forearms have healed, but the mental scars remain. :D

$800 is not a lot when you start modifying what can be a $100000 vehicle. I have a Safari Snorkel on mine and it looks as though it is brand new after 11 years. I reckon it looks great too. I had the LR RAI on my Defender, I wouldn't get one again. Safari make the best quality product in my opinion. Looks great too.

Does the genuine Land Rover RAI for D4 My16 still have to be modified or sealed ❓
Or are they sealable for the current models ❓

The LR unit has to be sealed. It has drain holes at the first elbow inside the guard, and the tubing is considered porous.

Does the LR RAI require drilling into the A pillar to attach as I believe is needed with the Safari? Anyone in Sydney do the mod to waterproof this? Any requirements for other breathers - transmission etc?
I do not understand why LR produce a product that is not really fit for purpose i.e. not watertight!

Because they don't want you taking the car deeper than the wading depth it's designed for. There's a whole bunch of other stuff that shouldn't be getting immersed above the wading depth & the rai is only meant to get the intake above the dust level - not allow you to go swimming.

With Safari snorkels (haven't had one for quite a few years) I remember there were drain holes on the inlet head up top, the air would push any rain water down these channels. What I can't remember is if there any drain holes anywhere else in the Safari❓
Also does the genuine Land Rover RAI have the same drain hole/channels principle in the head inlet as the Safari does❓
I'm going to raise (pardon the pun) a question on snorkel performance.
For 20ish years I have been fitting snorkels to my vehicles for the "in case I ever need to cross water" and in that 20ish years I have only ever once come close to benefitting from having it, water across the road that was boarder line level with air filter box.
Most of the time I avoid (deep) water crossings if there is alternative routes.
So that leaves the question of performance if not fitting for submarine encounters.
Yes there is the benefit of less dust when travelling behind vehicles in convoys but that can be overcome by keeping distance between vehicles. So not so much a necessity for this reason.
Is there any benefit of the vehicle sucking more air through a snorkel, I could see that as a possibility with Safaris (camel poking it's head out) style snorkel but does the Land Rover RAI have that same ability or is it more restricted by its good looking swept back design ❓
Nonetheless if fitting the genuine RAI you would still have it sealed water tight for the "just in case" scenario.

I would be more worried about electrics I think personally. If I'm going to go through that much water for that length of time that the RAI can't handle it, I'd be more worried about the electric gear going fowl.
The wading depth I think is 700mm, that's pretty deep anyway, and if I thought it was going to be a bit deeper, I'd wrap up the front with a tarp anyway. The hose for the intake is not "water proof" as such, but would be water resistant.
I was watching the Land Rover Experience expedition (??) the other day with the Disco Sports. They drowned one, pulled the air filter out and replaced it, and away they went. Obviously the motor was either stopped by the operator or the electric system saw the fault and shut down. Either way, they didn't hydrolic the car.

The hose for the intake is not "water proof" as such, but would be water resistant. Not in my opinion as the holes are large enough to allow water to escape. However floating becomes an issue at that depth anyway.

Marcus,as far as I know no cutting or drilling required for the OEM.
A question for GOE wheel owners.Since fitting your wheels does your air filter get significantly more dust in it??? Worth checking.
Since fitting my GOE wheels I notice that the side panels and rear door get much more brake dust, road spray etc down them. When you look at the rims after driving on dusty roads you can see how they had drawn dust thru them. This pic also shows them in action "pumping sand",I think they doo the same with dust/spray.
https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8135/29479950721_473749a52b_o.jpg
Just wondering if anybody has noticed the dust/spray/brake dust etc.

I wouldn't have thought they'd do any cutting either with the OEM.
As far as the wheels go, I don't know yet, mine wont get here until after I've got my other goodies done. A little bit disappointed as far as that goes, I would have preferred to see black wheels without the bar work etc, rather than the silver wheels with all the bar work,,, but alas, only like that for maybe two weeks or so. :D
Just hoping I don't need the AT's for Gordons course in two weeks. Can't wait for this :D

I believe one of the LR Indies in Melbourne does a sealing kit for the factory RAI as well - making it into a snorkel.

I thought about that Mike, but I'm not sure I'd be too worried about going that deep.
If it should happen, I'd be getting mighty worried about other electrics through the car. No doubt, depending, I'd put up a water blanket to try and keep some of the water out of the engine bay electrics. If I thought it was going to be that deep, I think the RAI pipes would handle what ever got there, probably better than the electrics (??).
If I'm really not too sure at all,,, there's always the "chicken track", or turn back,, I'm just not that proud to say "no" over drowning our car.
No doubt I'll learn a little more, (well, a lot more I hope) next weekend with Gordon.
