Hi Guys
I note from the number of posts, many of you bend the steering rod/relay(the one behind the diff) quite easily.
I saw a simple but strong looking protector on Ebay that looks like it bolts to the diff.Basicaly it was a piece of plate that bolts to the diff with a piece of angle welded to it,the rod/relay moves in between.
Anybody got any pics of and protectors they have made/bought????.
Im going to build one for Black Betty,And a front diff shield.
I got caught out a couple of times on sunday with less ground clearance than Im used too.

I have a small hook on the back of my diff but there is to much room for the steering rod to start bending. Over the weekend I bent my steering rod and the hook jst transfered the bend to the passenger side.

I just welded a length of angle onto the steering rod. So far it has been great.

simular to QT Services

They are QT.
Front and rear Guards are QT.

Shipped from the UK. If i had to pay shipping it would not have been worth it. Try a local source...

there goes your insurance if things go pair shaped!

LRH is right it is the protector i made. the HD rod and ends came from
rangie spares.
the problem with the one on ebay(same as the one that george130 has)
is that for the std rod the guard sits out to far from the rod, so it bends first in the middle and then again on the pass side like edd's on the weekend.
with the HD rod and a protector like i made nothin is gonna bend. problem is i think i'll break a tie rod first 8O

i was actually thinking about making some more like mine, and sellin them on here?

correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure the 2001 Defender has that protector standard, you could always get a LR genuine part.

The local parts guy laughed when I asked about steering guards today. He seemed to think it makes things worse, but he could have been thinking of something like mine. Interestingly Landrover quoted me $305 for the track rod and the local guy was $280 which droped to $165 when he saw my mate. They get theirs from Land Rover anyway so its the same one.
On the defenders there is mounting for two track rods one at the front and one at the back. Apparently the non power steering ones need the two rods to make the steering easier to control.

Yay its all done! I have the new parts in and the alignment done. Its sooo easy to drive in a strait line now.

Yeah I just did mine too. Is straight, is strong, is good :!:

I am very amused by the standard 'protector' that is fitted, presumably to stop the tie rod bending too far back. Its made of aluminium and snaps nicely when a decent load is applied to it. A load that might, say, bend a tie rod

I don't know why but I'm pretty sure that practice is illegal in NSW, I know a few that have done it though, I'd check it out before welding anything on to the rod.

Better to buy the Maxi drive one & be done with it properly, not that I have yet I just keep straightning the old one, I bet it can't take many more.

The Rangie already had the Maxi already fitted.

Cheers

Bryce, if you were closer you could have my old one - it's possibly got a few 'straightens' left in it. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Thats what I plan to do with my old one straiten it incase it happens again. Might even carry it around with me once it is done so I can hot swap it when needed.
