View Full Version : Brake shields necessary?

My mechanic assures me the front right rotor shield is where it should be, but every time we even look at a gravel road it picks up stones and starts squealing. If I'm lucky I can flex it enough to free up whatever's in there, but if not we have to put up with the squealing until it falls out.

Before I rip the thing off in a rage, it would seem they exist for a reason but I'm not sure what it is? What's the worst that can happen without them on? The inside of the rotor doesn't wear as quickly without stones permanently wedged against it?

Thanks in advance, L319 and L320 enthusiasts!

You must be unlucky!

They keep water spray off when raining so you don't get fade, and they keep most abrasives from ripping the inner pad apart..

Some would say!

I wonder then if they can be modded. I know there's aftermarket ones for Defenders but if I'm the only one with this problem it might be up to me...

Hi Stuart, this has happenned to me a few times with both the RRS and the Puma. Each time it has been fixed by stopping and reversing a few metres - the stone dislodges and drops out. I may have just been lucky though. Glad to see you still posting in the D3/4 forum as this is a shared issue like so much of the shared platform RRS and D3.

Thanks Marty, that has worked on occasion.
The weird thing is that it's always the right front. It's beyond me!

has the right one been damaged in some way? maybe bent a bit closer so less clearance? Wouldnt take much so could be hard to eyeball........ this was the case with my Puma so a little gentle bending solved the problem

Stuart, I've had this happen three times in about 7000km of dirt road/track driving.
Each time it has been cleared after hitting ~80km/h once back on bitumen.
I haven't tried driving briefly in reverse but can see that working too.

Cheers,
Scott
PS ... I'll still talk to you even though Tribal Council has spoken.

Maybe 180 kph will do the trick? :)
