I had a chat with Dave Ashcroft re the supply of the transmission viscous couplings for P38s.
He tells me they are looking at remanufacturing them ie making a new side plate to replace the worn female spline and refilling with fluid.
This is good news.

I was told the same thing a few months ago and that is indeed good news! I drive around with a second hand unit right now and I do not feel comfortable not having spares :(

So, this will also fit/work on the LSE and other so fitted RRC?

My understanding is that they are interchangeable. Perhaps some one in the know may post a definitive answer.

Yes they are interchangeable, they've the same part number.

Yes indeed, my information is that they are the same VC. Both murder the VC. The only difference being the Classic will also kill the output shaft, but leaves the chain with only "normal" wear, whereas the same box in the P38 is easier on the shaft, but stretches & chews the chain. And cogs.
Nobody knows 'Why' ...:o

They are different boxes, but the p38 being heavier with more torque is likely the culprit.
I hate to think how much torque is going through the chain in lowrange sometimes!

Bit of an update here.
I had a bit of a decko at the Ashcroft website wondering where they were up to with their re-manufactured Viscous Couplings project. The good news is that these are now available and listed on their website.:D
See - Ashcroft Transmissions (http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.php'search%5Bkeywords%5D=+torque+converter&_a=category)

I... can't find the VC's? The link you provided shows us torque converters which is not the same thing ;)
I tried a quick search but it only turned up a freelander unit.

You are spot on Prelude. I saw what I wanted to see and got it wrong. Appreciate the correction.
However there is some good news from Superquag re the Viscous Coupling availability.

Good News !
Received a reply from Ashcrofts UK, they plan on re-building the VC, so check their website next week, when they hope to have them listed.
Yes - that is good news. Thanks for the update.

I mailed Dave Ashcroft this week about an update on the VC units, this was his reply:
Yes, in stock at £295 + £75 refundable core charge
This is good news! It seems we will have a source of VC's after all and mind you, the price is very good concerning what the news ones cost in the end...
Cheers,

Well done. I don't think too many of us will be using/claiming the core refund though???
And transport costs to AU would be in the order of ________ ?

I guess from au not too many people will go for that option from a financial perspective. If we wish to have enough of them available through time though we might end up doing that :)
I do not know what shipping to australia would cost, I live across the pond from england so for me it is kinda different. The units are fairly small but do weigh in quite a bit, I'm not sure what costs more, size or weight?
Perhaps one of the major au landrover specialists can afford and is willing to keep a number of them in stock? It would cut down on shipping costs and time for that matter. and I'm sure that there is at least some market for it over there.
I'll see if I can weigh the on in my spare transfercase the coming weekend to see what shipping from here to australia would cost. Anything up to 5kg costs roughly 50,- euro's. so I reckon that would be the ballpark figure you'd have to keep in mind ;)
Cheers

Thanks. The question about transport was aimed at my compadres here. We do individually import a lot of stuff especially from UK (including Ashcrofts) and also US and I'm pretty sure someone will have a ballpark figure for an order of magnitude estimate.

If you go to their website and put an item in your basket, then head for the checkout it will calculate the freight automatically. You don't have to purchase it at that point.
