Trying to figure the economics of a rebuild vs new engine.
For $7,000 fitted (plus $400 extra for new clutch) I can get a Transit Mk7 140 Ps engine. According to this seller (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LANDROVER-DEFENDER-Engine-Motor-BRAND-NEW-2-4-TDCI-/291544041534?hash=item43e161083e:m:me4VmdOY85xyq41 quxPOcyw) - they have supplied several of these engines to replace the 2.4 Puma donk in the Defender.
I've seen this posted on another forum:
Defender Puma 2.4L engine can be replaced by Transit Mk7 engine provided it is a 140 Ps.The reason for this is the Defender Puma like the 115 and 140 is the higher spec Puma block with the oil cooling jets. The variable geometry turbo on the Defender and the high spec Transit is the same, along with injectors, starter motor, water pump, vac pump,EGR Valve etc.
The difference come in the form of the flywheel, the Defender engine was always supplied with a solid mass flywheel whereas the Transit came with a DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel). There is also a slight difference in the shape of the sump.
Has anyone here been down this route - any potential pitfalls?

I haven't "been down that road", but I think I've heard that the Puma version of the Transit engine has different internals more suitable to conditions that may be encountered by 4WD vehicles.

Pickles, it's the sump and baffling (along with the ladder frame/stiffener) that is different between Transit and Defender based engines.
I've found reference to "seals" being different as well, but cannot work out which seals from their pictures.
If it's a long bare engine, everything else that is Land Rover specific will be swapped over.

That is cheap  Possibly cheaper than your other option;)

Has anyone removed & resealed their sump successfully before ?
The reason I ask is that the oil pump recall (2.2 Puma) replaced the sump - I thought because the removal proccess bent it out of tollerance or the like. Must be strong sealant !
Anyway, you might have to factor in the cost of a new sump.
Cheers.

So they are charging you $500 to do the fitting, thats cheap. Consider they have to remove old engine, strip all the ancillaries and fit them to the new engine then install said new engine.
There must be bloody good mark up on the engine itself to do the install for that amount.
Overall to the OP... I dont think you are going to get a better deal than that.

P.S It would seem, having a quick look around, a Transit engine of the correct spec is anywhere from $2300 AU - $4500 AU, so even accounting for shipping its why the seller is doing the install for $500

Thats correct, the sump gets damaged on removal.

At any cost its still a kick in the guts for a fairly new vehicle with low klms.

True enough but not as big a kick as D3 / RRS owners that need a new engine...

I was informed at last year's Land Rover Expo, by the chap doing the new models show, that the new Ford Ranger engine bolts straight into the 2.4 TDCi spot in the Defender.
It might be another option for you, although I daresay the cost would be greater. It's apparently a very good engine....so I've heard. I haven't seen the figures on it.

The 3,2lt engine for the Ranger... no doubt bolts up...
While I dont have any details, the ecm is going to be different, just as a start.
The 3.2lt has its own quirks.... changing the oil within 10 minutes to ensure the oil pump doesnt loose prime being one of them.
Google it, there are businesses in the U.K that do this conversion to the 3.2lt

Not quite as straightforward as "bolts straight in". It's a 5 cylinder versus a 4, so it's longer. New loom needed, new ECU. Quite involved, but there's a lot worse.

There is a German guy in an other forum "expedition portal" that is planning to do the conversion if i remember correct. Should be in the Land rover forum and called "an expedition truck on portals" i think. And he definately knows his stuff might be worth contacting him.
