Does anyone in Melbourne have a spare set of balanced roadworthy rims and tyres they'd be willing to lend me for a few days to a week to run on my car and work out once and for all whether I have a wheel/tyre or driveline issue causing Roger's shudder?
Thanks in advance

Or if someone going from Sydney to Melbourne can take Dean's wheel down. I have it at my place but can deliver it in Sydney.

Noisy is fine, as long as they're balanced!

Hey mate,
After reading this thread I went and stalked your other threads...😬
I have a d4 with 180000 that suffers from the same few issues you have had.
Front right squelching mystery, I would call it a shimmy, in the steering wheel. I've been told everything in the front end is fine and have replaced LCA, tie ends, had 3 different sets of wheels on it, and so on.
Interesting thing is, I had a new disco as a loan car the other day.... First thing I did was look for the shimmy. It was there!!! Much more subdued but definitely there.
So I'm left baffled. I think that it must not just be one thing that is causing the problem. Must be just everything getting old and lose. everything I replace seems to help a little bit. Next is shocks but based on your post I don't think that will give the result I want.
Look forward to your wheel test but I hate to say I do t think it will do anything g other than rule out wheels.

If it's just one wheel without a tyre I should be able to fit it in my car. Heading back to Melbourne from Castle Hill Tuesday morning (26 July).

That's very... encouraging??? :P
You're right about everything helping a bit. I can't help feeling something that didn't appear til 180000 should be fixable? Let me know if you have any joy

Haha sorry buddy, didnt mean to be debby downer. It's really strange everyone says everything's fine but I know it isn't. Yet I've done about 50 or more thousand k and other than annoying me it doesn't seem to have any adverse effect. I find it's worse with ATs on verse road wheels. My bus feeling is there is something lose in the steering rack.

VK3GJM kindly loaned me a set of 19s with 255/55 General Grabbers.
The car felt much nicer at 100 but the vibration was still definitely lurking.
Back to the drawing board.
19" GGs with 60000 on them weren't noticeably noisier than 20" Cooper LTZs with less than 15000 on them. Definitely significant differences in ride and handling between rim sizes.

I just put a (another) different set on mine again, this time with Pereli ATRs and.... the vibration is worse. 😩
Again only through the steering wheel though. The rest of the car doesn't shake. It has to be the steering rack, right?

I'm really hoping not!! There'd be some tell tale play, surely? Next I think I'll try getting a four wheel alignment just to be sure nothing's out.

Has anyone got a Topix subscription and had a look at the TSB regarding the "shimmy" ?

I didn't know there was one... a basic subscription isn't enough to access those, is it?

Actually, as it's a copyright document, I've removed the attachment. If you want it, send me a PM.

Looks like it could be a costly excersise. :( I have always thought it might be the steering rack/ assembly. Might as the boys about it when it in for service in a few weeks.

Looking at the parts list, and the methodology, I'd agree. However, I'd be pretty sure in saying that there's a number of parts listed for changing, that seem to be a little over cautious.

Be interested to hear what they have to say.
At least I'm half way through that list already!

I have the same thing that has only happened recently, but I know my LCA bushes are in need of replacement, so that's my first stop. It's getting worse as time goes on, so now it is just finding the time to pull it apart and replace them, then wheel alignment.

Me too Stuart, the 2 big ticket things for me to replace now would be the steering wheel and and the rack itself. That along is near $2k. Think I'll live with it for a bit longer while I get the timing belts done and trans serviced.

Ironically we had to swap out the rack on our previous car, a Volvo XC70 (only 70000 kms though) and it cost around the $2k mark. That was clearly stuffed though. It's an expensive punt in this case.
It'll have to wait on the RRS for us too :/
What's the steering wheel got to do with it all, anyway, does anyone know? Is it the column as well?

Getting the LCAs replaced improved the problem in my car but I think essentially masked the underlying issue. With my time again I'd be tempted to sort it out before subjecting fresh bushes to the vibration.
My mechanic is adamant it's not the steering rack cos there's no discernible play. He wants to look at the drive shafts.
Has anyone had an experience with unbalanced shafts? I can feel it through the wheel but through the whole car too. It's maybe more noticeable when the right side is loaded up but not a lot.
I think it's actually contributing to the kids getting car sick. :/
