Hey guys.

I've got a puma 130 with a steel tray, aluminium canopy on 33's with 120k on the clock. The gearbox output shaft has been in the back of my mind for a bit and i was going to chuck one ashcrofts improved versions into it.

How harder job is it to do? Is it just pull the transfer case off and replace the output shaft with the gearbox in situ or is there more to the job that I'm missing?

Cheers in advance.

I paid the mechanic to do it, but from what they said they just took off the transfer case, and that the Ashcroft was was superior to the standard.

I think from memory it's the one with a cover pic of a Range Rover with an Aston Martin V12 under the bonnet - seriously mental!

I've completed enough DIY clutch and gearbox changes at home and in mates' sheds on smaller cars, that I'm not sure I don't want to do this myself.

Mind you it is only the transfer case coming out...
... can't be that hard...
Right?

Being under warranty I'm not sure I'm allowed too! ( apparently being a fitter and machinist doesn't count )

The hard bit is bolting them together without damaging the input seal. Pat

150mm long guide studs worked for the earlier models, I assume the Puma is similar.

Hi northy, i think you mean the transfer case output shaft? Front or rear?

The puma still has the LT230 TC, I think yes, so the rear housing can be removed and a new drive shaft fitted, and put it back. Not saying it'll be easy and you won't bleed. Access is resonable under the defender , once you get the handbrake off.
