Off Road wheels for D4 HSE

Hi All,

Just bought a D4 HSE with a Black Pack, looking for some off road wheels that will fit over the brakes any suggestions?

Hey mate,
You will need the compomotive pd1881s from GOE.
There are also a couple of other options. Kmc have wheels that fit, they are not load rated.
You can run the 2.7 d4 front caliper and disks. This will need an engineering cert. Good luck getting that.
You can shave the caliper, gets done plenty but won't be legal, again you can run spacers same deal.
Mud tech 4x4 have rims but they are just as dear as the GOE rims.

You can fit 20" rims. There are better off road tyres in 20" than in 19". There are a couple of off road tyre options that are OK in 19" apparently. However, unless you're going into a pretty harsh conditions I would wear out the OEM tyres.

I should mention I chose to go with GOEs for peace of mind on rocky roads and have a tyre size that is common for Prados and others so easier to get if I need a replacement. I also carry a 2nd spare if I have the trailer.

Thats what I did and approx 40K later and trips to Cape York, Red Centre, Fraser Is (multiple) and numerous 4wd parks etc, I have had to replace 2 tyres (approx $500). You can do the maths for the GOE option, but if you have endless budget than GOE is better, else the NITTO all terrains are great on road and off road. Have had some minor scratches to rims which I plan to paint when they get really bad. Still way ahead of my budget, so i can spend on other extras (LLAMS, extra tank etc....).


Good luck with whatever you choose. You have a great car for any offroad and its really comfortable in any conditions.

Andrew, did you notice any increase in road noise when you changed to the Nitto's from the OEM/previous tyres?

No noticable sound difference from the Nittos.


The most noticable sound difference was adding the Snorkel and listening to the car's heavy breathing ! Only an issue if the windows are open.

So Fossicker on your trips to Fraser:
Were you towing a van?
How much if any did you have to drop the tyre pressures?
Did you get into deep sand or go to Inskip?

would be interested to know as we are heading to Fraser next month and I'm concerned about running the standard 19" rims/standard tyres combination.

I wouldn't over think the 19" wheels issue too much. I have been on plenty of soft WA beaches with my 19" wheels with no issues. Deflate your tyres and drive sympathetically. Some rods or LLAMS to get the underside up off the sand is well worth it also.

Completely agree with Chris on this. I have Compomotive 18s now but spent nearly 2 weeks on Fraser with 19s and GOE rods. They were fine on the sand. I did end up pinching one tyre and getting a little bubble in the sidewall but that was on a tree root on an inland track and completely my fault for not bumping up the pressures a bit once I was off the sand.
On softer sand I went down as far as about 16psi but most of the time I ran about 18-20.

Hey mate,

I've taken my 19"s everywhere. 18psi seems to be the magic number in really soft stuff but low 20s is good for general driving and gives a bit. Ire protection for hidden hard stuff.

Good comment about 18psi being good for soft stuff with 19"s. I went on a beach and took too much notice of a bloke that has had a D4 for a long time he recommended no lower than 25psi....... and I got badly bogged.
Down I went with the pressures and eventually and got out OK.
I'm sticking with the 19s until at least these tyres are on their last legs. Then I may go for those new style steel rims in 18" which were talked about on here not long ago.

I agree with 18psi being the go for beach work (19" Hankooks).
