Hi there, a bit of a newbie in the ownership department although have driven the Perentie in the army. I have a 2016 110 that has 3550 kms, bought new, and the engine oil level is hovering around half. There are no oil leaks following an underbody inspection when applying ACF 50, so I'm wondering do l monitor and leave it till first service....which would be 20,000 kms! Or top it up? I have read a few threads in relation to which engine oil to use which can be daunting....thanks for any advice, appreciate it.

I went back to my Land Rover dealer and they topped it up for free.

Yep, the dealer will top it up for you.

Mine was down about 1/4 and the dealer mech said that was about 30 mils in reality. After top up it hasn't moved... I suspect it just wasn't filled to the top a the last service.

Don't pander it,if it's using oil drive it like you stole or the problem will get worse. Pat

Without stoking another argument I did my first oil change at 5000, albeit after the Birdsville and stresleki tracks, just to run it in. 😉

So - interesting comment on how to drive it - I have driven my 2015 2.2 with enthusiasm from the start - and I have felt that it has just got better the more I use it. Both with low revs pulling out of a corner and how well it works through the gears

I think it gets better each month - it now has 15,000km and it has some decent pull low in the revs and is improving. When new it was useless when pulling out of a corner in low revs below 2000rpm - I am now starting to get how good the 2.2 is :)

I took mine in for a service check to complain about the brake fluid levels after around 10 months - it was topped up free of charge and was fine after that. They also checked all other fluids / oils for free - all was fine.

I have had great service from Trivett at Parramatta - just sayin!

Cheers,
Col.

My 11 month old 90 has been down about 1/4 on the dipstick since I checked it on getting home when new. In 8,000kms it has not moved, so I've just left it. Also the coolant is about 1/2" low from the cold level, again since delivery. Service due on 20th Oct so all will be fixed. Fuel consumption has also come down from around 12.7lt/100kms to 10.7 over the 11 months, all mostly highway driving at the 110kph WA limit. Put's a smile on my dial every time I drive him, just wish he didn't collect so many dead bugs!:)

Funnily enough that's who I bought Daisy from!

Col,think how a diesel engine works,to burn the fuel it needs pressure and heat, for the rings to seal the bore they need pressure and heat, you get neither fluffing around at low rev's ''running it in''.All ''running it in'' does is chokes it up with carbon, idle it for 30-60 sec's for the first morning cold start, cruise down the road for a bit to get oil everywhere then drive the sucker. Same here with fuel consumption - started off around 12.7 and 12 months on I am closer to 10.7 more often than not. Mostly semi-rural driving - down to the shops whenever I can - I enjoy taking it for a drive (anywhere).

You are so right about the bugs - I keep mine clean - and it takes just a short drive to get bugs on the windscreen :(

After 80,000 kms my 2009 2.4 is using about 10.5, rising to about 11 when towing our camper trailer, so it sounds like you are now down to long term figures. Also, I find mine is happier if it regularly gets a good highway run. Maybe it causes the EGR to get hot and self-clean?

You are doing well fuel consumption wise with a 110, and agree about driving it regularly. Our nearest shop is only 3 kms away, but I go the long way which is 12 kms each way! Bugs on my red one aren't too noticeable except for the windscreen, but the Grassmere green shows every insect known to man - I have to scrub the front after every trip.

Most of the Defender runs are highway drives between Perth and home, about 70kms each way. We have a caravan arriving this month from Victoria, so will have to slow down to 100kph in WA. It will be interesting to see what happens to the fuel consumption.

Run a straight through exhaust and it'll lower your fuel consumption. Pat

When we picked up Ike he had a 1500km drive home... even tank to tank on that trip the range edged forwards slightly...

We just ran it from the get go, on cruise on the way home I'd change from 6 - 5 - 4 and let it sit in different rev ranges from time to time.

The oil level is down about 1/4 on the stick but that's after 18,000 km from new and was there when we got it home.

Off for a service next week so won't be an issue..

Ours doesn't do much commuting and gets regular 110km/h highway runs, so I think that's good for it.

As long as it doesn't just "sit there" and gets worked...
