Gday again all,

Todays problem is as follows ;)

I have a fair bit of free play on the steering wheel, I have traced the dead spot back to the steering relay, the lower arm appears to be moving up down left and right all by itself.

So I started doing some research, It looks like there are a lot of opinions with these.. Fix them in place, don't loose an eye with the spring, don't use bearmach, don't use reproductions, don't use reproduction kits to fix them, sell your first born child.

Sooooooo... What the heck? where should I go what should I ask for. I saw some online from all 4x4 spares at a decent price (~200ish), but no mention of make etc.

Now i have seen the issue i'm scared i will die :P

Help me AULRO ;)

Lots of threads on repairing them on the forum.
The aftermarket ones can have shafts that easily break hence the comments you've seen.
Until you dismantle yours you won't know what parts are needed but everything is available and there are several methods for safely dismantling & re-assembling. Hopefully the shaft is reusable and not pitted too badly.
Don't get the seals from a LR supplier, get them from a bearing shop.

$200 will probably be Bearmach/Britpart as they are about 70GBP in the UK. Problem is, will yours come out of the crossmember without too many issues ??

Make sure it is not just the arm loose on the shaft - if so, you may be able to just tighten the pinch bolt.

All good thanks for the replies and offer. I got it home and jacked it up so i could get a proper look and access.

This is what i saw...

So i grabbed some wood chocked the arm up, and tightened the arm bolt with my beaker bar (i previously tried to do this in the work car park with a spanner not good enough ;) ). Now shes like driving the misses fiat 500 :P

+1 for me being an amateur :P

Good to hear some spanner work cured the problem.
Might pay to check the oil level in it too while it is on your mind. They don't hold much, so a tiny weep over a long period can run them dry and result in heavy steering/wandering issues. With that 4BD1 grafted in there I would expect there is a few kilos to manoeuvre about.

Cheers, Mick.
