How you going down there Paul,, keeping out of harms way?

I'm guessing your a bit quiet with the fires in your district,, hoping all is well.

Your right there is still a bit of fire activity around, but thus far there has been no threat to townships mainly burning in hard to access bush, our CFA guys had a few busy days and nites.

Have made a little progress...........and............had a big win[bigsmile1] driving down the main drag of Bairnsdale I followed a series 1 with historic plates and no top, with two guys in it. When they parked I parked as close as I could and spoke to the owner.

He gave me info on the club he was in, but even better gave me the name of a sympathetic RWC mechanic that understands old Land Rovers[bigrolf] I spoke with him as well so perhaps all my angst over RWC without seatbelts etc is unfounded

Progress pics........Brake plumbing complete (trip today was to get some clutch plumbing bits and brake fluid)130124

Seat box and seat mounts in 130125 130126

High spec locking petrol caps and cruise control 130128 130127

Question............ couldn't get arm from steering box on any further although not visible in pic there is a full nut on there and lock washer. Is this OK or normal?

The fuel tank lock is usually put at the top (doesn't catch on things as much).

I'll have to look at my steering box, but I think that is fairly normal - the splines are tapered, and how far on it goes will depend a bit on the somewat variable state of the taper. A caution though could be if the splines (both arm and shaft) were painted, it may be seating on a rather thick layer of paint. If this is the case, expect it to get loose after a few thousand km.

Small amount of progress, my radiator repair seems OK but engine running and hot will be the best test.

Also got the clutch bled hopefully I've got it right.........when I had the gearbox out I noted a little bit of twist on the clutch arm gave a lot of movement on the sliding washer thingo ,time will tell

Next job is brake bleeding[tonguewink]

The booster is a PBR VH44 brainchild of previous owner so I kept it, there is also a huge vacuum tank that goes on passenger fire wall.......if you go back thru my posts there's pictures of it. That'll be going back in to

130477 130478 130479 130480

Not sure about tyre carrier I may remove it and use brackets to store high lift jack, and put spare on bonnet. Unfortunately I only have 5 matching rims so must decide bonnet or back, initially I wanted both but that 6th rim is proving elusive.

Im not sure, I assumed it was something the previous owner fabricated, but you are right it is well made. There was no part number on it that I could see".......somewhere in the past some one quiet handy has been at the car ,it also has a full roll cage I've got stored way.

As usual fitted guards twice [bawl] not realising inner goes on the inside of bulkhead support bracket, I was too concerned about lining up outside

131004 Ok the three warning lights ,charging cold start and oil press where do the red male bullet ends go? have I lost some of the wiring[bigsad]

Also the white female bullet connector....... wots this for, (original loom)?

Coming out of loom is a purple female connector that looks as if it hasn't been used judging by dust inside
131005Lucas wire code has it as Accessories fed direct from battery via fuse (always live).......so I'm guessing I don't need it.

Finally Alternator I have wiring that connects to this131006 131007

I'm guessing round end goes on post with nut....but the blue female spade connector I labelled "Ground " when I pulled out wiring but I cant find a male spade connector on the alternator???

Bit of an update
131269131270131271131272

I've got a lot of electrical problems to solve........no indicators, high low beam, tacho or fuel gauge[bawl] but my old mate is coming around tomorrow to have a look, recons its all easy fix[bigrolf]

Engine bay once wiring is 100% I'll tidy it all up with corry pipe
131273

This is my take on trying to get a non stranded clutch master to marry up with LR bits
131274

Car starts and runs clutch and brakes could do with more bleeding but they work........went for a drive using 1st and reverse however I can only get low range, when I let the clutch out in high I can hear gears not quiet meshing and no forward or backward motion.

My gut feeling is select lever has not enough travel towards bulkhead what is the arc distance between high and low at the knob?

131275

Manual shows spacers on transfer lever mounting bracket is there a set length for these?, as I'm sure I didn't have them before and I didn't put them in. or is it trial and error?

131276

Will pull drivers floor up and have a good look tomorrow ...............only took an hour of jiggling to get transfer leaver rubber gaiter bolted in[bigsad]

Yep fun, fun ,fun had to pull up both floors and gearbox tunnel, also had to remove lever pivot bolt to get at bracket mounting bolts....... resulting in hi low lever falling down just missing my scone as I was under the car and spring clip going awol for a bit [bawl] going to leave floors loose till everything is sorted[bigwhistle]

Now have... hi low range, forward, reverse and stopping with a bit of pumping....................something is grabbing with brakes not sure if its hand brake or rear brakes, needs further investigation with some one listening for sound source.

Ok this thread is nearly over, roadworthy booked for 27th November

I'm a bit disappointed about windscreen sealant still not arrived and brake sensor switch I ordered off a UK company I've delt with often during build also no show[bigsad]

upside is brake lights now work ......I'm picking poorly bleed brakes weren't activating hydraulic switch properly

Ended up using glazing silicon for windscreen .......messy and will be difficult to remove glass if need be in the future.

I feel your pain......I made a handbrake gaiter a couple of years ago https://www.aulro.com/afvb/series-land-rovers/227027-handbrake-gaiter.html#post2440711

I found a supplier for butyl rubber tape https://www.aulro.com/afvb/series-land-rovers/224654-butyl-rubber-tape.html?224654=#post2414520 problem is the link is a bit out of date. They were in Dandenong and I could probably find them again if anyone wants some, heavy stuff to freight though....
I used glazing silicon on one of my Land Rovers but now I have the tape I'll probably use that in future.

132764Jade on trailer coming home after passing roadworthy and gaining registration.

I was quite anxious about roadworthy and registration but it went well

Roadworthy guy was stoked with car saying it was so good to see old Land Rovers being put back on the road [happycry]and when was I doing my next one[bighmmm]

Only problem with that is I haven't been entirely honest with the financial controller about the cost of the project[bigwhistle]......I think the dog ate some invoices[bighmmm][bighmmm]

Jade is on full Victorian registration as a five seater wagon .....three in front, two in back, no seatbelts or anywhere to mount them, and with no roof.

will be interesting if I ever get pulled over by the constabulary, how can you wear seatbelts if they are not there, and no the vehicle is not a ute. I hope registration details, age etc trumps Police rule book.

Check out VSI 21 on the VicRoads website regarding seatbelts.

Not a legal requirement (in VIC) till 1/1/1971 in an offroad passenger vehicle, maybe print off a copy to carry with you. I haven't had any issues with my Series I.
If they are fitted to a vehicle prior to the above date and you're not wearing them it's an offence.

Bit of an up date 120 miles on clock Jades getting more outings than Pearl or Ruby😊
Filled passenger tank to capacity to check fuel gauge ....all good😊 But......sun was on that side of car and fuel expanded leaking out of cap and running down side of tub.....bubbling paint and dissolving it as it went😫"........not happy Jan 😢
Took car for a 20k run to burn of a bit of fuel and on return felt vibration from somewhere
got home first thought was maybe I'd thrown a wheel balance weight of a front wheel juggled wheels vibration still there.

Had a good look under and found about 1/8" side play in one of the rear Uni joints fortunately I had a new uni in box a mate had given me, popped it in vibration gone😊
Sanded back paint and resprayed side of tub so alls good again.

BE WARNED........Agricultural Enamal for all its good points for an amature spraypainter doesn't like petrol or brake fluid

As a beside 40mph on speedo is actually 52mph on gps and car was rolling along quiet happily
won't try recalabrating speedo until I get original rims and tyres on.......still waiting for Dunlop super gripper roaded tyres from the local guy".........should of bought a full set when I had a chance instead of two😱

Just be aware Paul, if you fit it incorrectly you will have no oil pressure. The non return valve in the filter will stop oil flow. Ask me how i found that out. Mine had no instructions when i got it and it can be fitted two ways.

You might find the reason you are having trouble with the filter leaking is that a lot of the cartridge filters seem to come
with a neoprene ring now instead of a rubber one. I had trouble on my Fergy diesel tractor with the cartridge filter housing
leaking and ended up reusing the rubber ring from an old filter, it stopped the problem. I had reconditioned the Fergy motor
several years back and fitted a new oil pump, so it had plenty of oil pressure, and under pressure the neoprene rings would
slip sideways and cause a leak. The old rubber sealing rings had little lines on them and they seemed to stay put easier.
However I agree a "spin on" filter adaptor is the better option.

Cheers, Mick.

Most likely issue is the sealing ring is damaged or has dirt in the groove - easy to do either. Easiest and cheapest way to get a replacement ring is to buy another filter - they are cheap!

It is also very easy to pinch the sealing ring when tightening the bolt. Been there, done that!

Check that there is not any damage to either the groove or the edge of the steel housing, but most likely is that the ring is damaged.

Chasing more leaks, when Jade was inspected for roadworthy the mechanic said her rear passenger brake slave cylinder was leaking.........kindly he overlooked this:thumbsup:

Today new cylinder arrived in the post so I went to work

Drum with wheel removed 135335 drum removed....something wrong here 135336 135337 135338

New slave installed 135339

I left pads on and cleaned them up with petrol then sanded them a bit 135340 and cleaned in drum 135341

Then put drums back on cranked up adjuster and bled with my trusty one man bleeder 135342

Over a lemonade this evening my old mechanic mate suggested that heat from the brakes will keep sucking fluid out of pads ...not ideal but things must be better than they were....and car pulled up OK with leak.

Post Mortem

Crap in Cylinder possibly swarf it was new 135343 wear on piston rubber 135344

Also had some sort of leak in master cylinder area ......after checking and double checking connections with no obvious leaks replaced rubber hose from reservoir to master cylinder(It was same existing one from when I got it off Rod)

Also made a rubber gasket for cap hopefully I've fixed mystery leak 135345

Now I can get back to my other Project 135346[bigsmile][bigsmile]

Hhm a bit of interest in the boat[bigwhistle]

After sampling what a help this forum can be during Jade freshen up I'm suffering a bit from withdrawals [bigsmile]..........well perhaps the support when project seems bigger than Western Australia and you wonder why you started.

Will look for old photos and start a thread on the build (boat went under tarps while Jade was in progress )

Thinking boating and fishing area.......or should it be projects and tutorials.....perhaps a Mod could advise

My cold start light remains off until motor warms a little then stays on constantly
Cold start switch lever is engaged in slot that's turned into choke rod so light should be off I'm thinking.
Could it be I've got the wrong terminal on cold start switch on bulkhead I didn't pay a lot of attention to this when I was rebuilding
when I disconnect switch wire at engine block sensor light stays off

However grub screw from an old batten fix light fitting I had stashed was same thread and fitted[thumbsupbig]

end result no light at all maybe maybe switch is cactus ,thankfully cold start light is not essential to running car, and I am yet to use the choke to start engine although winter could be different

Might switch wires back the little yellow light is somewhat reassuring "........at least I know some electrickery is going on[bigsmile][bigsmile][bigsmile]

The cold start light should stay off until the engine warms, if the choke is still operated the light comes on when the engine is warm to remind you to turn it off.
If the choke control is in and the light stays on when the motor is warm then the switch is still 'made' and possibly needs adjustment.

Disconnect the wires to the switch and put a meter across the switch terminals. It should be open circuit when the choke is pushed in and you should get continuity when the choke control is pulled out.

Power on the test light clamp, then point to spade terminal. Light should be out on cold engine. Light should turn on with motor warmed up. If the light is on on a cold engine the thermo switch is faulty...

Or with multi meter set to ohms check for resistance between spade terminal and earth. Open circuit for cold engine closed for warmed up engine. If its closed circuit on a cold engine the thermo switch is faulty.

A bit expensive for a sensor, here's a cheaper one 545010 - Water Temperature Switch (http://www.pegasusparts.co.uk/ourshop_90073/prod_5948126-545010-Water-Temperature-Switch.html) but of course out of stock !
This side of the ditch https://www.allfourx4.com.au/545010

Could it be corrosion stopping an earth path from the sensor to the head ? A long shot but removing, cleaning & replacing with some conductive grease might get it working.....but if it's not important probably best to leave it alone.

Putting Jade thru her paces with northern visitor Mr One Off an unusual noise manifested itself

In both high and low range four wheel drive a knock knock sound came from what seemed to be the handbrake region, pulling handbrake on a few clicks did nothing to cure it.

This noise is only there on a very steep descent using the engine as a brake. Under power the noise disappears in high and low range, also not there freewheeling on the flat or moderate downhills

I put the problem past my 85 year old mechanic mate and he said its an old Pommy car, and started to tell me about.... to much end float, thrust washers and helical cut gears and not to worry about it. Then the conversation turned to problems he was having with a poor tradie job involving electrolysis between gal and zincalum sheets on his shed, which at the time seemed more important than my noises

Thought I'd throw it out there to the forum, any ideas and is it nothing to worry about

Cheers Paul

JDNSW
29th April 2019, 05:59 AM
Bit hard diagnosing a noise without hearing it, but I would be looking for some part of the engine/gearbox assembly that touches the body or chassis when the engine moves forward under gravity on steep descents, and possibly twists under engine braking. Exhaust system is the most likely but there could be other bits. Possibly contributed to by soft or loose engine mounts, but could be something a bit out of place.

You’ve described it pretty well Paul, a sort of tinny knocking, only at high over-rev, I think John might be onto something with the exhaust, from memory it was that kind of noise.

Have your old mate hang over the tailgate and have a look underneath while you go down that same hill... [thumbsupbig]

Doesn't have to be something loose - just inadequate clearance between bits that move with the engine and bits that don't.

Unless something has gone at the bottom of the gear lever (i.e. did your persuasion force the ball out of the selector) then the problem lies in side deep down.

My gearbox was the same when I got Sid and that was the bronze main shaft bush.

I had a similar situation.
The reverse gate had broken and was stopping gear selection. Couldn't get a replacement so welded up the break in it and refitted.
There were some pictures on here but removed thanks to Photobucket.

Once you remove the transmission tunnel you'll get a better idea.

Finally found some time to have a look for my gearbox problem, after I removed the drivers floor I noticed the red lever seemed loose and wobbly. Not sure why perhaps perhaps I’ve lost the spring clip on the knuckle but it did move forward a bit ........maybe and it’s maybe I knocked it into neutral which would explain the wirring but no movement when the clutch was let out.
I went for a drive to heat up the gearbox oil all gears were fine and no jamming in first or reverse very odd. Drivers floor is just sitting loose now I will pull the tunnel and passenger floor to see if something is amiss with selectors and a cause of the jamming problem and why red lever is loose.......things mightn’t be as bad as I first thought[thumbsupbig]
