So....wife driving home heres a bang like a backfire and metal scraping sounds....never good! I get home start the car and turbo is stuffed .:censored:

Has anyone replaced one of these before. I did a turbo replacement on my L322 last year and that was pretty straight forward. Am I correct in reading that the only way to get to the turbo is to lift the body off the sub-frame???

Hi Steinzy,
Sorry to hear about your little incident, maybe not so little by the sounds of things. Closest I have come to this is an EGR valve and thats wasn't easy, by any stretch.

I believe the V6 engines come out through the bonnet, the V8's won't. LR take the bodies off because it apprently only takes them four hours. How long it would take to get the engine out, I don't know and I wouldn't fancy it either.

Wish I could be of more assistance, the people who I have heard of with a turbo failure have ended up at LR.

Cheers Marty

Apparently it is unusual for these Turbos to let go even at higher kilometres! I paid a little over 10K for the car so even with a Turbo replacement it is still below market value which makes me feel a little better (only just).

I have been advised by a few of the workshops I have called have seen these cars 400,000 plus kms and still going strong....so don't stress this scenario is unlikely to happen to you.

after a few hours on the phone there are 2 possible ways....if the exhaust bolts aren't fused together it maybe able to be done through the wheel well....much cheaper labour!

Land Rover have quoted $3500 for turbo + gaskets & bolts with $1180 Labor.

British off-road can source a UK Turbo for about $2500......

biggest issue I face at the moment is getting it booked in to be done as most workshops have a backlog of bookings leading up to xmas holidays.

No way I'd be wasting time going in through the wheel well. Get the body off and on and turbo fitted in less than 10hrs.
