After my cataclysmic PC failure windows now tells me my version is not activated,, which it does when a major hardware change occurs.
As all my records are now toast how do I convince Microsoft my Win 10 is legit?

If you change just a HDD, or a motherboard, or (I think) up to about 4 other pieces of hardware, you shouldn't have a problem.
If you changed more hardware .. which amounts to basically a new PC, then you're going to need a new licence.

You're data shouldn't be toast(as such) .. it'll just be locked into that Win install for a while until you can transfer it over to another device.

Windows is only licensed for use on that machine(pre catastrophic failure).

What hardware did you change?

With W7 you could get loaders which are programs that activates windows. Maybe search around for one for W10.

Just get on the phone to Microsoft. I've done this a couple of times in the past.

Just tell them you had some hardware fail on your computer and after replacing it Windows doesn't activate, they'll give you a code to enter (really long one) over the phone.

well, seeing "it" took out my power supply, motherboard, video card, and 3 HDD's I just bolted the SSD(C drive) into a different PC.

I am seriously amazed it survived.....

Ok,, phone call coming up. ;)

so its now officially a 95% perfect storm.
only needed the ssd to die for perfection.
Microsoft could not find my win 8 key,,
I asked Swetha to search THEIR records for my payment,,
"not my job. try here"

used belarc, winkeyfinder, (why doesnt she know where it is?) winkeyfinder came up with a key, but not the correct one-- just how many keys are there?

and, believe it or not. YOUR microsoft account doesnt have ANY info relevant to the legality of your win 10.

so whats it for?
apart from gathering more info---

how much Inc?
65?
:(

I have now upgraded the storm to 100%..
SSD corupted, at some stage while still visable I loaded hirens and copied 100 odd gbs to another drive.... of course the windows recovery disc wont recover, and the iso loads till a purple screen and stops. mouse, headphones and keyboard lights all go out.
Have just finished running seatools on the ssd and it passes everything ?????

am now waiting for the PC case to fall apart....

just wondering if my install failure is to do with formatting???

the iso works, it runs fine until a drive is connected-- then freezes.
??

Could be memory issue or other hardware problem.
Cheers,

To freeze up when trying to install, using 2 diff distros, has to be hardware or setting...

Check all connections and get the name of each drive...
Go into the bios prior to booting and check all settings, including all drives and ensure they are the correct logical size...

Check everything is set correctly, ie things like boot order, acpi settings, lan connection etc etc... The booklet that comes with the board can explain what settings to do... If you are going for a clean install, then ensure you set the partitions correctly... Windows sets up a couple of partitions and the newer boards require an extra partition for EFI.. without it, they chuck a fit...

Cant get into the nitty gritty of windows as I havent looked at anything win since vista.. But the hardware side isnt too complicated, just frustrating...

PS if you have ram chips that are from diff manufacterers or not identical in anyway, then remove one, as they will conflict...

put the bios into failsafe mode and try from there...

not sure on failsafe mode,,
the board/bios actually has a "failsafe watchdog",, but it is-
'A mechanism to restore safe values if system cannot boot'
and anyway its always been enabled,,
the only other thing close is "default values" which again, apart from boot order, has always been ticked
it seems hardware,, but apart from a hdd change, its been the same config since \i built it 6 months ago,,,

Remove all drives but the new one and try booting, just with that drive...

All you can do is strip down to bare basics and try adding one item at a time...

You may find conflict between drives, I have experienced that myself...

Some times the controllers on board, can conflict with certain drive combinations...

Remembering that certain settings will work, and others conflict... Personally when a system crashes I just go through diagnostics, step by step.. Same process used for solving issues with everything, diesel/petrol/ electronics, all step by step...

Oh one step I use now, when I boot, each time I check bios, and see if the POST has changed things, then i write it down(memory shot with age)...

ps, just because it did work, doesnt mean there wasnt a fault before... I have experienced that with this laptop... Had to do a reinstall, then when upgraded the distro had other problems also linked to settings in bios... All very sweet now...

How's the power supply?

I've seen strange things when one is on the way out, and it sounds as if you are experiencing difficulties just as the system is starting to ask for more juice.

How old school! I take a screenshot using my mobile phone (patience shot with age).

Just to be clear--
this boot thing is on a different machine,,
it has run faultlessly for the 6 months since I built it,,
All I've done is try to install win 10 as a clean install(removed old C drive)

should be less power needed as replaced hdd with ssd.
all 3 sticks of ram are identical,

actually something has changed,, the vid card.
I dont see how that can affect anything but, (this card uses less power than the previous--) clutching at straws here--

Is the old graphics card still working??

If so, put it in and try again...

Graphics can conflict with other items on your board and was a well known issue years ago...

Can you do that with a mobile.. Damn been using a stick and sand lately...

Pockets get quite full when I have been given directions...

:D

Was the first line a question or statement...?

I had given up on this,,
but "found" a MSI R9 290 4GB
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2016/12/539.jpg
and this intel board is the only one I have that will handle it,,

so--
Inc, its gets to "expanding data" on the win 7 install screen,,(in failsafe) and then gives an error
0x80070003
and
0x80070037

the last time I played with this I ran memtest for 2 passes using all three ram sticks and it passed.

I cant even get it to install Vista from a gen install disc or Abuntu:angel::wasntme:

the good news is the fans spin, I get a signal at the monitor and I see the windows logo move for a bit:p
late edit; tried my 580 vid card and machine wont even post,, destined for the bin now,,
