I am setting up the gps/laptop in the Discovery. The software that I will be running is Oziexplorer.
The maps that I would like to use, at this stage is the Natmap Raster 250k series. These are available as a 4 CD set @ $99 or as a 2 DVD set @ $120.
The maps are available FREE Of COST if you download them from Geoscience Australia. The whole 513 maps are available.
My question is...would it be illegal to copy the CD or DVD set even though they are free to download?
Cheers,
Lyndon.

From what I understand, the maps on the DVD are newer, and of higher quality than the ones that are on the CD, or downloadable.

Geoscience Australia is the site for the raster maps.
You click on the free downloads section and that takes you to a search page. If you select 'Topography' and then 'define an area', that will show a map of Aussie with the maps. The only problem is the sections are SE, SF, SG and so on...BUT in each section there up to 16 or 20 maps. You work it out as each maps is about 2.5mb and then download...you will be there forever!!!! You also have to register but this only sends the 'License Agreement' to you, it will give you the link to then download your maps.
You can select a part of the country and then it will give you all the maps for it, but you still have to download heaps.
Cheers,
Lyndon.

Copying copyright software is illegal, and it's theft. Don't try to dress it up as anything else.
Who gets hurt? Two parties; the producer of the maps, who loses income due to theft, and everyone else who ends up with higher-priced maps and less choice as there is less incentive to produce anything.
Just go and buy what you need.

The maps are available FREE of COST from the website
If you download the maps it costs you nothing. The same maps are available on the CD's.
I do not see a problem to copy the CD's when the maps are available FREE of COST from the website.
It is the same product and the government has decided to release what you bought last month for $100 to be made available on the website FREE.
And really, the only offence you can possibly even get is if you make multiple copies and then sold them off.
When was the last time we were pulled up and checked the cd case for copied cd's and if we had originals or not :?:

According to what Inc. said the maps on the DVD are newer, as such they may not be being released on the web.
In that case it would be piracy.. if however it's something like the FreeBSD disks which *are* freely downloadable OR you can purchase the disks and have them shipped to you - that would not be piracy.
If you wish to pay for them then you are both receiving a hard copy and supporting a cause...

I just had a quick check on [url=https://www.ga.gov.au/products/servlet/controller?event=DEFINE_PRODUCTS]Geoscience Australia and some of the maps have a release date of 1 nov 2005 I doubt that you will get much more recent than that.
To me it would suggest they are releasing the maps to the web as they update.

the downloadable ones are the same resolution as the ones on the CD version.
The DVD version contains what the cd's contain, plus the higher resolution maps. The higher resolution maps simply dont fit on 2 cd's https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
the maps on the cd's and dvd's are covered by a different license agreement than the downloadable ones. to the letter of the law it is piracy to copy the cd's as they are issued under a different license agreement, there can be no argument, just rationalisation trying to justify actions https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
