Took Leon out to our monthly LR gathering in Tamworth yesterday and most of the water decided it didn't want to circulate anymore, so it escaped via a perished and split top radiator hose.

One of the blokes (thanks Rick) offered up some silicone sort of self amalgamating tape. This, along with a couple of strategic cable ties, got me home albeit most of the way on 3 cylinders, closely followed by Grant (thanks). This, I assume, due to wet dizzy and or plugs, which cleared itself a couple of k's from home.

Now to chase up a new one or a similar replacement. And some tape for the spares box. First time in over 10 years, he's given any real grief.

Take the old one with you to Supercheap go through their stock and you'll find one that fits (may have to cut it down).
I did that with mine years back and I think it was one from an early Corolla that fitted, I did write the details down but can't find the bit of paper now !!

OK, found an invoice from 2008 ! The hoses were from Supercheap but the brand was Grommet (!)

Charlie, I don't have one so can't comment..... are the connections on the radiator & thermostat the same diameter as for the 2 litre ? If so it probably will fit.

Supercheap have all the hoses out on display so you can poke around till you find something suitable. Most other places you have to get the person behind the counter to look for you and most people aren't interested.

Nice one Colin. Although that does say it's 32, which I presume is 32mm

I went everywhere but Supercheap yesterday.:(

Biggest issue is size, as most hoses are a lot bigger these days. The Series 1 2 litre is 1 1/8" (around 28.5mm) Plenty of right angle bends around, but all bigger than that.

Before I order a genuine one I'll make a trip to Stupidcheap.

Nothing to suit in Bursons here Mick

Perry,
That hose fitted my 2 litre OK and there was another I purchased at the same time GR13/CH935 which I think was the lower hose. Or maybe it was the top one......too long ago to remember.

The advantage (?) with SuperCheap is that you can rummage through the hoses yourself.

How did the orange self amalgamating work out.

I carry rescue tape supposedly designed for the purpose you used it for in my spare parts but have never used it - until the other day when my garden hose developed a small puncture hole so I used the tape on it - twice - it failed on both counts with the house water pressure causing it to bubble and let the water out. Maybe it will work better with the heat of you coolant rather than cold tap water.

My experience has me thinking I might need to rethink but seeing your experience has me thinking again.

Cheers

Garry, that stuff worked a treat. Mind you, I only had to drive 11k's home. and I put the cable ties on just for peace of mind.

When I was in Bursons with the hose, a bloke was admiring my fix and told me a mate of his had used it on a repair and left it for 10 months without issue.

Me, I'd only use it for emergencies and like you, thought that 100mph tape would be the go. There are good and bad brands of these too.

Off to Stupidcheap now for a looksee.

Success

Although I couldn't find the hose that Colin referred to, I did find this one.

This is also for a Corolla, albeit a 1.6 litre. I figured it would make 2 top hoses.

But lo and behold, I got a bottom hose from it too, :D which has gone into the underseat spares
