Heard on the grapevine that some forumites removed or are having dramas with their chip upgrades, got a big trip planned and would like to know more, anyone care to enlighten me, thanks.

Talk to MickG he knows all about problems with chips, he has had his chip in Bruce Davis's workshop more than it's been in the car!

Hi crump, still working through some issues with my manual TD5 which always seem to come back to the ECU. It has been looked at a couple of times and replaced once but my car is still not running as it should. In the new year I will be swapping it with a factory one for the day to see if that eliminates some of my drive problems, but until then I can't really say that it is definitely the ECU causing the probs. I'm 99% sure it is and someone who has had similar issues to mine and knows a lot more about it would be Greylandy on this forum.

Good luck with our search and if you fit one and don't have issues, you wont regret it. Mine worked first class for a week in July this year and you couldn't take the smile off my face - turned to mud again though and i'm still troubleshooting.

I actually had the ECU replaced not just a flash the chip job, dunno if that makes a difference, but when you say problems, what are we talking about, it runs rough, it explodes, it stops, exactly what?

Since fitting my chip I have the following probs;

Lack of throttle response - judders and sometimes stalls when taking off at lights. Down on power, blows plumes of smoke at lower revs, low down torque is woeful, gear changes are not as smooth as they used to be, jerky sometimes when coming on and off throttle etc

To fill you in a bit more whi may help, mine is a '99 TD5 with 128,000 on it, 265/75R16 muds, 4.11 diff gears (which should bring the gearing back a bit further than standard due to the 31"tyres)

Greylandy had issues - think its now been removed

Noddy had issues, but seemed to have them fixed - currently on a 12 month trip around Aus and no issues about chips from what I've heard.

Hi Hiline
From what I recall reading on here, the ealier 99/00 TD5 actually need the replacement ECU,the later ones like yours is just a re-program issue.

This is what I am finding difficult to understand......how can an ECU have so many issues. Surely it is wired and programmed to do it's job and nothing should interfere with it :!: Why do some of them **** themselves 8O 8O

Mine was a replacement ECU aswell being a '99 model and BD had to replace the first one he sent me as it had an unfixable internal problem.

Crump, I hope you have no issues with yours becasue as I said earlier, when they work, they are fantastic. Are you happy with it? I may end up doing what Greylandy did if mine is still playing up in the new year.

From what I understand, the original problem was when the turbo over boost then it would revert to limp home mode - this was then changed to if it over boost then use the LR factory settings.

On our return from the VIC show earlier this year it continued to over boost and go back to factory settings, Noddy took it back to Bruce Davies and found it was max boost was 22PSI so they lowered this to 20PSI and also found there was a problem with the air flow metre.

As far as I am aware this has been fine.

Hi LRH

That would make sense but mine has had air flow metre changed, throttle sensor changed, turbo looked at etc. It has basically been in and out of the mechanics for the whole of 2005 and none of us can come up with a solution to why it will not drive like it used to......still searching though and as I said, we always seems to come back to the ECU as the main issue. So, the only way to find out for sure is to stick a factory one back in and see if it drives like it should. That way I can say for sure that it's the re-mapped ECU casuing me issues.

I also think there are a number of different ECU's since 1999.

really they wouldnt reject a claim as they are rejecting work and hence dollars...
and in the end will lose you as a customer.....

if they are smart they just wont let land rover find out....

MickG - did you ever go back to a standard ECU to see if that fixed your problems? Did it turn out to be something else?

Hey spudboy

I did swap my ECU for a standard one for a couple of weeks to see if that made any changes.....it did to a certain degree. My throttle reponse was better, smoothness of gear changes improved and it generally drove a bit better....albeit without much power.

Once the remapped ECU was put back in and I went for a play, it started running good again and has been fine for the last 2 weeks......not counting my chickens yet though as I have made that mistake before  I also added some injector cleaner to the equation and suspect my car just needed a bit of a clean out.
Happy just now but still think the chip could be slightly more refined to deal with smoothness and lower down torque. I believe Bruce Davis is looking again at the "99 Series 2 chips as he has had a few people have similar drivability issues to mine.

Hope this helps, Mick
