Hi guys, looking for info regarding 20" rim options and tyres.
I've been looking, but can't seem to find what I want. There's tidbits throughout, which is making searching difficult.
Preferably, I "don't" want to hear about 18's or 19's please,,, I just want to know about 20's.

So, at this point, we're seriously looking at getting 20's as our other options not looking good. I want black rims, I did think about painting mine like I did with the Defender, but with upcoming work schedules etc, I'm rapidly running out of time for the Easter break/trip.
So first question,, is there a "better" brand option,, we're looking at a set of Advanti's at present,, can't think of the name, starts with "t" I think.
Next is tyres,, again, have looked only at a couple, but the Nitto Grapplers are looking ok. Not wanting MT's, just AT's which are reasonably quiet on road,,, the Grapplers seem to fit the bill here (??).

So, if your experienced with them, or you are currently using 20's, can you give us your thoughts on them please?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah if you want the higher load rated Discovery 20s there's not a lot around, especially in black. I'd have to think there'd be more than a few after market options with brake size not being an issue?

You'd have seen Meccles is running the Nittos on his Sport and seems happy. I have Coopers and will probably try something else next if I can afford the changeover. They're ok and can be picked up good second hand, but not great.

I think it depends a bit, too, how oversize you're prepared to go.

Did I read somewhere there's a new Grabber out recently?

Mine has the standard LandRover 20" wheels so I can't help you with Advanti question.
I've been running the Nitto Terra Grapplers 265 50 20 for 57K now and they are probably 3/4 worn (not helped by worn LCA bushes for a time).
I've been happy with them in that time, road noise is good, ride a bit harsh on the small stuff, dry traction good, wet traction poor, off road traction good and wear reasonable.
The only thing that has been a problem for me is the wet traction, you have to drive accordingly and it is easy to understeer in roundabouts, wheelspin when accelerating and set off the ABS when braking.

They have seen limited off road use (beach and dirt) but I have been happy with their performance. I've had one puncture due to large screw through the tread.

I have 19" tyres so can't advise from personal experience. However, my brother who has a Grand Cherokee with 20" rims last year got the Nitto Terra Grapplers. He and I are quite impressed. They work great with towing his large van. Good on dirt and did well on the rocks in Palm Valley last year. If I was running 20" wheels they'd be near the top of my list. Good value for money.

Might add. At Kings Canyon when leaving the First aid centre after visiting a friend who was in there. My brother on reversing out caught the front wheel with the Nitto's on the sharp edge of a concrete block near a post. It caught the sidewall and then went up over the edge of the concrete. Probably a 4-6" high edge. With any other tyre it should have ripped out the sidewall. However, it went over the block with no damage. I was pretty impressed.

A brother has 265/50R20 Nittos on his RRS. 2 tyres suffered sidewall damage on some inland WA/SA tracks but they are on the wider RRS rims that stretch the sidewalls, not the narrower Disco rims.

Be VERY careful when buying wheels to ensure you get a REAL load rating over 1,000kg. Many won't handle anything without damage.. especially rim edges which are nothing like OEM wheels.

Thanks for the help and info guys,,

Stuart, how do you mean your getting them second hand,, are there really that many around and not wanted/disliked, or are these from people getting rid of the whole rim/tire to go the 18" option?

With the Nitto's in the wet,, couldn't possibly be any worse than the CC's on the Defender with no ABS.

Mike, I believe the load rating on the rims I'm looking at is 950, but I'll be checking more. My info has come from a very reputable LR mechanic here in Melb who will be looking after my car.

PM sent Andy,, cheers.

I have standard 20" LR rims and have been running Nitto Terra Graplers 265/50/20 for about 18 months now. probably about 20k km's. I echo the comments above, good wear, reasonably quiet, good in dry, can slip a bit in wet, however i think this was because I was used to the sticky Pirelli Scorpion Zero that was on before. Again just need to drive to the conditions. Would I get them again, YES.
One of the good thigs about the stardard LR20" rims is that due to the narrower size the tyres do bulge a bit and that has saved the rims from quite a few scratches. Current rims look a bit like a smashed crab thanks the tight Inner West Sydney streets when i had the Pirelli 255/50/20 on.

I have the Nitto Terra Grapplers in 265 50 20.
Very happy with them.
Good on gravel roads, highway & around town.

Have not experienced traction loss in the wet - maybe I drive a bit slower.

Look better on the car as a bonus.

The extra little bit of width seems to protect the rims that little better.

I'd agree with Chuck that's been my experience to date with the Nitto TG GP2. So far very pleased with them. Same size 265/50 R20

Hey guys,

I'm glad I found this thread as I need to replace two Pirelli Scorpion Zero's as they didn't fair well on the northern Flinders "roads" on our trip in March.

I tried to do the right thing by enlisting the help of a local place to track two down for me, only to be told that they Pirelli have stopped making them.. has anyone else heard this? I'm not keen on the Verde all season or similar as we often to ad-hoc off road trips and need something that can deal with the territories finest.

After reading this thread I might ask about the Nitto's.

Well after the short run I've had on them so far, I'm happy. I haven't been up the bush propped yet, as in the High Country, but they performed well on our SA Googs Tk tour. The only thing I found I didn't really like was the "floating effect", when out on a really wet dirt road. Having said that, I think most cars experienced the same thing.

So the Nitto's are $100 cheaper, but I have to drive to Darwin to get them.

People have said that they aren't that great in the wet, is this something that runs in over time or are they average the whole time. Driving in the wet season is often challenging without having to fight a car, but I have found with MT's that with a bit of dry season driving it helps get a groove driving in the wet isn't as big a problem.

What is the googs track surface like? Rocky? Tracks around here go from sand to rocks and shale to rivers/mud and what ever else you want to imagine.

Googs is a sand based track, some liken it to the Simpson, lots of sand hills to negotiate and very rough (wombat holes going up the dunes),, but the gravel road was the Tarcoola-Glendambo Rd.
This road was a fine gravel, which when wet they close. They let us out of Kingoonya, and then closed the road whilst we were on it. So skating around a little I would think would be the norm for all cars in these conditions, and driving to the conditions is the way to go of course.
Depending on how I go with them up in the HC will depend on whether I get these again, or look for something more aggressive, otherwise I'll stick with these probably.

Aaron,

has the 30mm increase in width (and therefore sidewall height as a ratio) change the speedo error much? our disco with 255/50/20 is 6k/hr out at 100 according to our phone GPS's (two seperate phones)..

id like to look at that size rubber but cant have the missus worrying about getting booked in speed camera city...

cheers

i bought one from (scorpion p zero) 200,000+ 4x4 and Car Tyres Online | Tyroola Australia (http://www.tyroola.com.au), actual link to tyre PIRELLI SCORPION ZERO XL M+S 255/50R20 109Y TL Tyroola.com.au (https://www.tyroola.com.au/pirelli-scorpion-zero-xl-ms-25550r20-109y-tl-ty5465eb9e05.html)

build date less than six months old, try them. awesome prices too, better than anyone local by $60

I finally got a tyre today. Had to settle for a 265/50 R20 in a Maxxis AT700. And because the tyre people in Katherine are stuck in the 90's, I had to source it from Darwin.

The next tyres I'm getting will be the Nitto trail grabbers, $375 fitted in Darwin or $235 + frieght + fitment from Tempe tyres.

Lesson from this, in Katherine there are three tyre places, one thinks they don't do a 19 or 20" off road tyre and I must be mixed up, one doesn't ring you back and the other hasn't heard of any other brands other than BF Goodrich/Cooper's/HiFly..
