hi guys
you ma have seen me recently introducing my self in a different forum, funny only owned the car two weeks and i'm already in the technical forum looking for help and advice as the disco has already started bloody leaking..........i told the boyfriend that is just crying because it has not been offroaded yet.......but to the point we have a 1999 disco which has just sarted leaking fluid into the drivers footwell from behind the dash.
i can't smell anything so assuming it is water, which leads us to believe it might have something to to with the a/c
are we right??? has anyone else had this problem if so is it easy to fix ??
is it easily accessable or do we need to take it to a garage
thanks for the help

Hi Dullbird,
welcome to AULRO! Well, Landrovers tend to leak water to the inside and oil to the outside. If not, assume something is wrong. Whilst this can be annoying it is an usual part of their behaviour.
As I only have owned Disco I models my experience regarding Disco II is not up to the latest standard. To me it seems your problem is related to the aircon. If you can check this and do not find any fault you may find some other sources of the leakage, namely window seals, panel gaps closed with filler (that becomes porous with time), clogged sunroof drains... the list can be extended almost endlessly.
There exists a "Water Ingress Manual" for most LR models, you might want to check out the emporium if there is one for a Disco II as well.
Merry Christmas and a Wetty New Year (pardon the pun) to you!
Cheers

Merry Christmas Dullbird,
I don't think that it has rained much in Sydney during the last two weeks? But I bet you've used the AC. So my guess is it's the condensate (water) generated by the AC . There is a tray to catch this under the fancoil in the dash. There is a tube that drains the tray to the underside of the vehicle. This is probably blocked and this is not a rare occurance. :x
So it's under the car you go and see if you can find the tube either side of the transmission. It would help if you had access to compressed air so that you could blow through the tube to clear it. Then all will be well. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
And then take the poor thing off the bitumen

My sentiments too,
when I had the pajero, sadly only gone a month but the houseboss enjoys her new car, so I can't complain i got the disco back.( even though after 15 years of drivng it i still enjoyed the roughness.)
Back to the problem, as Mahn said a blcked condensation tube will give the internal water leaks, the paj did it all the time, just a case of poking up something thin into the base of the condensor under the dash.
One other thing a mate of mine just got rid of his disco and bought a D11 because of the same problem. Yours by any chance is not dark green with new alloy wheels and nice new yellow shocks, if it is give me a pm and I'll tell you where the rust holes are.

As said before, its the aircon drain tube caps under the car. Just pull them off the tubes and leave them out. (I have two in my tool box).
It won't cause an issue unless you go deep water wading. Otherwise you will need to check them reguarly. (Monthly would be about right).

My fender did this today on the trip home but on the passenger side. I will be playing with it tomorrow. My drain tube doesn't have anything on the end but it might have been clogged with mud for the trip I did with my brother over christmas.

The thing I found with our Disco is that while the windscreen seals looked healthy, water poured in when the windscreen copped water. This INCLUDES WASHING THE WINDSCREEN. I have not seen the DII seals up close, but the DI has a centre bead that SHOULD force the seal up against the glass. In the case of ours, it did not and the section pressing on the glass required sealing with RTV silicone.
It sounds silly but I would strongly recommend that you have a very close look around the sides of the transmission tunnel, footwells and firewall while someone pours water down the windscreen with a watering can from the outside edges, moving towards the centre. Check both sides the same way.

Hey Dullbird,
First thing is that your name doesn't make sense,,, Any bird driving a DII can't be dull. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ (shhhh dont tell my wife I said that) 8)
Like someone said earlier,,the tube your boyfriend squeezed has got a "rose bud" drain fitted to the end and there is a tube on both sides of the transmission tunnel.
If you give the rose's a good pull they will pop out (and can be refitted at any stage). If you leave these in, you may need to get under and clear them with annoying regularity. the aircon seems to be a great vaccum cleaner as well all the dust and rap within a hundred feet of your car seems to end up in your aircon drip tray 8O and this when drying out seems to be glue like. I do water crossing fairly often during the wet up here and dont have any negatives from removing the rose buds.
If you look under your carpet you will find LR have used the worlds most efficient sponge 8O as soundproofing and the little leak will become something of a lake very quickly. but it is almost impossible to get your carpet properly dry(even if you think it feels dry on top you should see the water this underlay can hold ,,SSSHHEEEZZZ
You have probably noticed now that you have cleared the tube the aircons on these LR's are pretty good. Mine up here in the tropics is like having a tap turned on under the car :? , raises some eyebrows amongst the NISSOTA drivers up here. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ The poor buggers dont seem to understand how a car can have such an efficient aircon even at idle 8O

Hey Dullbird,
I've currently got the same issue in my Range Rover - mine is actually a coolant leak onto the driverside footwell. I have traced it back to a perished o-ring in the heater core that i need to remove half the dash to fix. With any luck yours is easier to fix!!!

Not the point - the radiator fluid is circulating through the heater whether it is runnung or not. So it's a case of when the engine is running I get a small fluid leak on the carpet due to the perished O-rings. I think that Ron (P38a Rover) has tried an alternative method of replacing the O-ring by taking the intrument panel out, but not 100% sure.
and for your info the temp on the Coast now is 32 Degrees

my point exactly......
just bypass it.....then the coolant will not be flowing through it.....and hence not leaking in the car......
you then have till winter to get around to fixing it properly.....

Unfortunetly uou cant bypass it due to a lack of space because you have 2 solid pipes that come directly through the firewall into the heater. you would need to remove the entire airconditioning unit to make the room to bypass the heater core.

Mate its dead easy pull both pipes off on the engine side of the fire wall an join em togeather.........................
Hey presto no leak in the heater core

at the risk of causing costly engine damage its cheeper to pay the mechanic $700 to remove the dash and hearter/aircon unit and replace the 2 orings that i purchased from Landrover for $4
