View Full Version : Fuel sedimenter

Hi all,
Wondering if anyone can help.
I am looking at carrying out a major service and want to replace the fuel sedimenter filter, i assume that a Delphi (CAV) 296 replacement to be the go but looking at the unit the filter looks too short in stature that's unless it goes somewhat into the bottom cup.
what do you guys use

There is no filter in the standard sedimenter. That's all it is - a sedimenter where the fuel drops into it and hopefully any water stays there. But you can disassemble it and clean out any crud that is in the bottom. You can convert it to use a 296 Delphi or Cav filter if you want to.

These are a great bit of kit, and work well for picking up larger particles as well as water. Like Brian says there is no element to replace.

Try and have less than half a tank of fuel when you undo the sedimenter, otherwise the pressure from the fuel in the tank being above the sedimenter will make it run out the lines.

Also, the little plastic tab on the bottom can get very weak/brittle with age. if it does not want to undo, don't force it. There is a metal nut ontop that you can undo to remove the whole sedimenter unit and from there you can put it apart from the top down instead of the bottom up.

You just solved a mystery I had in my head for the last few months...

cleaned the drivers side sedimentor and the fuel stopped fairly quickly. Cleaned the passenger side and it kept running the whole 10 minutes I spent cleaning and putting it back together..... now I know why

Thanks everyone,
I guess the 'o' ring seals will be a bit stretchy due to the fuel, as i really can't afford to take it off the road just yet i will get a delphi filter just for the seal's.

Cant fit fuel filter to a sedimenter top as it hasn't got the center post machined for the oring.

you can replace the assembly.

we buy packs of orings seporatly. top and bottom of the filter are different size.

I added sedimenter to a filter, then piped into the bottom for a surge tank.

I first fitted a ryco or Delphi filter post sediment/water separator on the driver side top radiator stay. The water separator picked up the big particles.

I replaced both the water separator and ryco filter for the Simpson trip for a single spin on Raycor filter/water separator. Except the filter was rated to 2 microns. It blocked way to quickly. Especially as the 5 year old genuine side tank had corroded inside and the rust shook loose with the corrugations. They are a great filter but not 2 micron. A water separator would have saved the filter.

Well have worked out that the can is different to standard, and thats OK.
What i want to do is take it apart and give it a clean.....from what i get is the seals / "o" rings are standard CAV type stuff.
Where can i get them from as a separte item.

Ill have a look tomorrow - I am pretty sure I have quite a few sets of them here.

Yes mate pretty sure they are the same. Sorry I haven't got back to you - been a bit occupied with cyclone Debbie. Still no power here.

Read in an earlier post that you can fit a filter if you want to, but it requires a longer bolt through the guts. In my Disco 1 that means taking the housing out the first time, to fit the new bolt. After that it's just a matter of dropping the bottom off, clean the trap and replace the filter. That's what I'm planning to do with mine, as I'll be spending a fair bit of time out west in the future. Some people have replaced theirs with a glass bottomed one - can't really see the point in the Disco, as it'll be covered in dirt and dust, and quite susceptible to rocks etc, where it is located.



Fleetguard FF167A are the same as the CAV 269, too. $6.50 each from the local filter & bearing joint.

I replaced mine with a filter, using a new head (provision for the small o ring), a longer bolt and the existing metal base because I didn't want to worry about the glass getting smashed. It still seems to separate water, as the filter paper has a special coating designed to coalesce water.
It's probably overkill, given the Isuzu filter at the engine.
Agree with Rar110 that its best not have too fine a micron rating in the primary filter but so far so good.
