View Full Version : Running the suspension at +100mm for regular driving?

Good afternoon,

I was reading a thread on Facebook and some LR3 owners were saying that they could drive at normal speeds with the air suspension 100mm over stock using the Llams unit. I asked about CVs binding and they said only at full lock and giving it a bit of gas. I am curious if anyone here has done this or had any experience seeing other do this?

We have a similar unit to Llams available in the States but honestly we are way behind Australia when it comes to actually using LR3-4s for what they are intended. People are just starting to look at them for modding and true trail use. Up to now the majority have been mall crawlers.

Any information you can share on running at extended heights would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Eric

G'day [emoji14]
Probably goes without saying you wouldn't want to do it for long periods of time. It's a relatively strong drive train but aside from the usual issues with raising independent suspension (tyre wear/camber, strain on linkages etc), the ride is pretty awful and the handling at speed wouldn't be far behind...

There's another thread running at the moment on the logistics of oversized tyres if you're interested in that kind of thing.

Apart from the obvious issues around stability, I think the main concerns would be CV longevity and also struts. I have run my D4 at +100mm on undulating tracks and I could feel the struts topping out over humps in the track. Not something I would like to have occurring long term....

I would have thought a minus setting when hooning around.

Yeah you guys are behind the times by shipping defender 'perenties' out of Australia

Aside from the issues that may arise, it's just not a nice ride with the bags inflated that much. That's one reason (most) people buy these rigs... The ride, don't understand why you would mess with with that for a non practical reason.

Put the disco in super extended mode and drive over a speed bump, it's as solid as a rock. No thanks. Hahaha. Lift it to clear a obstacle, then drop it back down. [emoji23]

I reckon get a set of these...

Bolt-on-Portale - Tibus Offroad - Tibus Bolt-on Portale Portalachsen Umbau bolt-on portals portal axles installation Mercedes Benz G Land Rover Jeep Toyota Suzuki UAZ Polaris (http://www.tibus-offroad.com/produkte/bolt-on-portale/)

Probably too expensive tho [emoji14]

As the others say the ride sucks at that height. I know you can get some spacers for the airbags, but you still have to worry about CV joints, and you will also likely need rods to keep the height sensor within its allowable range. But that should help of the car drops to the bump stops (you'll need to extend those too) as it should clear bigger tyres.

Cheers

Dan

For me if I was to drive around above normal hieght, then it would be +30mm or first setting of the LLAMS, but correct me if I'm wrong, LLAMS only goes to 80mm, first setting +30mm second setting +50 = 80mm, the're the only + settings I have on my LLAMS as far as I'm aware.

Its 30 or 50. 100 is subject to the D4 speed restrictions since it is +50 Llams or rods plus the Disco's +50 off road setting. Only the +50 or +30 is available at all speeds.

The Llams 100mm is in reality only about 90mm but it is achievable on all but the very early versions using extra high/recovery mode meant for when an ABS fault lowers the vehicle to access height and therefore available at any speed. However the rear camber will be quite positive and the front not too great either unless an alignment is done at the height and as others have stated, the suspension is much too rigid which detracts from the vehicle's ability to ride bumps and its general stability.

actually using LR3-4s for what they are intended.

D3/D4’s are not intended to be driven around at +100mm

The information which was given on Facebook (If i remember the correct discussion) was that there have been no issues running a D3/D4 at higher speeds at +50 setting, not LR Off Road and Llams +50, and the CV problems that were mentioned were when a vehicle was stuck and trying to self recover ie in sand etc.
