I run a 3" on a hotted up TD5.... Noticeable power increase and note.
For a TDI a 2 1/2" with a single straight thru muffler would more than do it and cheaper too... But make sure its mandrel bent and directly from the turbo flange.

On any turbo, I think the bigger the better, but on an off roader you got to think of clearanse too

Within reason!
Once you hit a certain point, performance per $$$$ soon drops.
On a TDI a 2 1/2" wont perform less than a 3" and is much cheaper option!
But for braggin rights go the 3"

What's the standard size on a Td5? (Too lazy to go outside and measure mine).
What muffler(s) do you have, I have been thinking about getting rid of the big one.

mandrel bends are the go!
the key it flow and lack of restriction, the tighter the
bends the worse the system will be.
2 1/2 plenty big enough.
go the kubotas!

FWIW, OE diameter is 2.375"

OE TD5 is 2 1/2"
U can just remove the centre box and get a muffler show to make up a flanged pipe to bolt straight in.
Provides a noticeable improvement, and great note!

Have just bought a 2000 TD5 Auto Disco. It is my first Land Rover (and 1st 4x4), but having read through this forum, I have gathered as long as you are willing to get you hands dirty every now and then, they are not to bad to own.
Now to making it go further faster!
tombraider, are you suggesting that as the TD5 already has a 2 1/2" system, that a cheap go quick fix is to just remove the middle muffler? Will this make a noticable difference? Obviously a 3" mandrel system would be nice, but if the cheaper fix will make a big enough difference, then it will be a good place to start.

I would be interested if anyone knows if there are any negative affects with backpressure on fitting extractors to a 2004 Rover V8 4.0Ltr. Or any negative effects with changing the exhaust system to larger diameter.
Or would i be better of just upgrading the exhaust to 3" and not having the last muffler on the end of the exhaust.
Or remove the main muffler and keep the little on on the end, or move it from the end to the middle?
Any ideas?

I have investigated this re a 3.9, and was told by Graeme Cooper Workshop Manager Ward that they find that autos tend to lose responsiveness down low when fitted with extractors.
Now the 3.9 I believe has a better exhaust manifold than the 4.0 as it doesn't have cats.
BUT the 4.0 has Thor inlet manifold and Motronic which always runs at Lambda.. I do not know but You may have the problem like a Gen111 that the ECU pulls back the performance to standard parameters , if it detects an out of parameter issue.
I would think carefully and talk to an expert eg Cooper about this before you do it. You know that the Motronic measures the resistance on every plug firing, and that you can only use the OEM plugs in the engine or you get error messages.
Its a lot of money to spend to have potentially little gain and generate constant error messages!!

Let us know how you go, I had a look at mine and it looks as though it's about to go as well.

Well I have to say the centre muffler lasted longer than I expected.... about 10 mins longer. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Ok, just back from having the centre muffler removed.
Seat of the pants feel....
Still goes well, little less lag while on the move, similar or perhaps a touch better off the line, noisier though nothing too bad - but it'll be interesting to see if the noise gets to me or not on a long drive. Cost $65.
Oh well, nothing ventured nothing gained. BTW, I dont think its a good touring mod due to the noise, but then again I should have tried driving with the windows up.
I cant measure exhaust temperatures, but I'm keen to also see if it affects the economy.

Hmm, the noise issue puts me off a bit. The Defender is noisy enough as it is! :?

In the defender I couldnt detect much noise change at all...
In fact, was shocked to hear how different the note was Behind the vehicle when my wife drove off in it one day. Nothing like how it sounded inside....
Mines 3" off the turbo and the only thing I hear from the back is the whistle of the turbo at low speed and a nice growl up higher.
Slunnie, it wont be an issue, seriously....
Cheers

Hey hiline, I have another thread going on something similar but just want to ask about your hotdog. Is that a common piece of kit and does it have a noticable effect on reducing the spooling of the turbo - i.e., after you fitted it to the 3" system did you notice the Turbo spooling up slower than with no muffler?
Appreciate your input as I try and get more torque out of my '99 manual TD5 Disco (and a sweeter exhaust note would be good also https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ ), Mick
