Hi All,
I have come to pickyour brains. I ave a MY11 disco 4 HSE SDV6. after a fantastic trip to the simpson dsert and beyond i started to have trouble with my central locking. it appears the drivers door when it feels like it MAY lock, but mostly wont. I get an audible double beep of the horn like there is a door ajar but it is not as immediate like when you do have a door ajar. The indicators dont flash and the mirros dont fold in like usual. Another sympton, when I drive away the doors automatically lock, (hmm forgot to check whether the drivers door does internally, will check that and come back to you) but when i open the drivers door it does not unlock the other doors as usual.
I guess im wondering if any others have suffered the same. I have read a bit of the manual, but before ripping my door trim apart and losing a dozen clips iwanted to quiz you guys. thanks in advance for all the support.......or the sound of circkets, whatever i get!
Cheers,
Landis3

It sounds similar to mine when my door actuator stopped working, it was on my font passenger side, but the same symptoms pretty much.
I pulled mine out and fixed it to keep it going until the new part arrived, the new part is still in the drawer 3 years on.
It is a fiddly job particularly if you have big hands and arms, it is what I imagine keyhole surgery would be like.

Thanks for the replies. I have nutted it out, possibly thinking a little to hard to notice the obvious, it appears that the cable or mechanism has gotten sticky/dirty/stiff and need free'ing up. when I hit the internal lock button it is trying to lock the front door but won't fully lock, this explain why when I open the front door internally the other doors won't unlock automatically. My wife can now stop blaming the 4 year old for relocating the door. poor bugger.
SO I guess I just need to pull the whole door trim off and access the cable for some dry lube or something of the like.
Better buy some clips [bighmmm]

Many of the lock mechanisms get dirty motor contacts as I've seen in previous threads. If it is you can pull the motors apart and clean the contacts and lube. Alternatively you can also buy the motors and repair it yourself instead of a whole mechanism.

I have this exact issue currently with my front drivers door. I know this was a while ago but did you end up replacing the door mechanism or replace the actuator? I would love to be able to lock my drivers door again. The others are locking just fine but the drivers door is sticking as described above. If you open it the alarm goes off much to my wife's annoyance. [wink11]

Did my rear door actuator today
The replacement was only possible for me with removing exterior door handle then internal mechcanism
Connecting pull cable from door handle mech to actuator first, then installing both together.
Hope this helps

My front drivers has stopped locking with the actuator as of today. Yay, just what I wanted my weekend to consist of.

Mine is giving the door open dash sign and occasional horn beep when locking so will be up for a new one myself at some stage.

I’ll give the strip down, clean, and rebuild idea a go and let you know.

Ok, so all done. As per other accounts, the main motor was all gummed up with dirt from the contacts wearing. While I could have cleaned out the motor and reassembled, the brushes were nearly gone so I chose to replace the motor, given I have a half dozen just for these occasions. Getting the gear off the old motor was ridiculously hard. It destroyed the old motor in the process. If someone hadn’t stolen my blow torch recently I’d have applied heat.
Putting the gear onto the new motor I found the shaft size marginally smaller and so it was only barely an interference fit. It was enough that with some locktite it bound up. Managed to reassemble, and she works.
A couple of photos below that show the innards plus new motor versus the old. There is a difference in shaft length and thus the shaft isn’t supported at the top, but it doesn’t seem to affect it. It locks solidly now. Worst case it fails and I buy a new assembly. Best case, it continues to work.
Hardest parts were releasing the window (two people makes that easier), and getting the clips undone for the outside handle’s cable. PITA!

I opened mine up for sh*ts and giggles found the motor brushes and commutator worn out completely.
Must turn off drive away locking to save wear and tear of motor!
Same problem as D2 as well...

Well in the end it wasn’t hard to do and the motors are cheap(ish) so I’ll put it down to one of those things.
The motors are similar/these ones

Mate nice work repairing the lock. I wasn’t game myself but with my second door lock failing in 2 weeks I’m thinking they are all just about buggered and it’s going to be an expensive exercise replacing them all. Might be worth a go to fix it. Can I ask what the exact motor shaft length is? 25mm or so? I did see ebay had a few at 22mm long. Cheers. Fiss

Unfortunately I destroyed my original getting the gear off, pulling it off the coil end so I can’t give you an exact size, however I looked at my invoice and I did purchase 20mm so 22-23mm is probably on the money. I seem to have also binned the remnants so I can’t measure total shaft length to work it out either sorry.
The 20mm shaft doesn’t flex so you won’t go wrong no matter which way you go. I’ve actuated the repaired one now about 20 times or more and so far so good.

Here’s a tip. Don’t forget to put this dude back on after you reassemble. Turns out it’s the cam that runs the door ajar microswitch. Without it no door light and the alarm can rearm with the door ajar. To reinsert when on the bench, use a screwdriver to latch the lock mechanism. This will align the key so you can easy clip it back on. Then simply pull the cable to unlock the mechanism and reinstall into the vehicle.
