gear lever and gear selection

every now and then I have real trouble selecting 1st / 2nd when stopping / stopped at the lights

I have to quickly shuffle it thru reverse or 3rd and then try again, multiple times on most occasions.

the gear lever is fairly sloppy.

any ideas as to what would be causing this sort of issue?

and any idea of how to fix it?

It is probably because the engaging edges of the teeth on first gear and the second gear dog clutch have been rounded by 45 years of inexpert shifting to the extent that they often can be in a position where the wedge on the edge of the tooth can't move the gear or dog to engage.

Major gearbox work to fix, engaging the clutch slightly while pulling on the lever works, but needs expertise on the clutch operation.

There is a slight possibility it could be the selector fork is loose on the selector shaft, but I think that is unlikely - it is also easily checked by taking the top off the box. Which would also allow you to see the edges of the teeth.

the box has always done it over the last 15 or so years but is now seems worse or I am less tolerant....

will lift the top of it off in the next few weeks and take a peek.

pop it out of gear and take my foot of the clutch and wait until the lights are just about to change, pop it into 3rd or top to stop the input shaft spinning and slip it quietly into first.

thats what I do, but sometimes no matter how you try you can't select first.....

You may find that using a slipperier oil such as a synthetic may help.

Anyone got any thoughts on this subject? My SIII is currently sitting in a field and refusing to move.

On the way to said field 1st and second gear was ok but 3rd and 4th sometimes difficult to find, almost as if they weren't there. A quick shuffle into 1, 2 or reverse seemed to sort it. Yesterday she was going great.

On entering field nothing. I can select reverse but 1, 2, 3 and 4 completely impossible, it's as I'd the selector shafts have seized solid and all I can do is rattle the stick across the neutral position.

When the gears worked, they worked fine.

Hoping its something if to do with the selector springs or shuttle things, but they have only just been replaced.

Any thoughts out there, I'll drag the lid off later in the week, once I get her back off the cows...

Watch out for the detent balls and springs...

Glad to hear it might be selectors or springs, been nervously looking at the price of gears and synchro rings! :BigCry:

I'll pull the top off tomorrow and have a look. Springs are brand new so thinking selectors..... hoping selectors!!

Got her back from the field with a little help from the young blokes 108.. the shame of it...

Definitely the selector forks...

The pinch bolts were very worn with much of the thread flattened out. No locking compound on them either.

On top, at the rear of the top cover of the gearbox is a rectangular plate held by two screws. It has a small hole in it. This is the gearbox breather.

Was looking at Incisors Extra bits and tubes, attached to the gearbox.
