View Full Version : Instantaneous oil level in a D4

Around the time of the forum meltdown, a very knowledgeable forum member posted a method of measuring the oil level without having to wait for the D4 to sit and think for 10 minutes. I have searched for the post, but it may have disappeared in the meltdown. Can someone help please?

According to the workshop manual, navigate to the 'Not Available' oil level screen, then press the cruise control cancel button twice within two seconds.
The 'normal display' should now be up.
Press the OK and follow the instruction
Haven't tried it myself though...

the bonnet must be up is also a requirement I found. No good if you have bypassed the switch to fix your alarm.

I think this is the thread you are looking for: Checking oil level (https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-and-4-a/226882-checking-oil-level.html)

The bonnet probably explains why this has never been successful for me

It's worked for me and I've never opened my bonnet to do it.
I haven't tried the cruise control button either, just waited 5-10 minutes...

Yes. Waiting works, but the immediate method has never. I think bonnet open might be the secret I'd been missing.

May be the same for me - I will give that a try too.

I had a look at the workshop manuals for MY09-12 and MY14 - cruise control button is mentioned but nothing about bonnet being open...

Looks like my original tip about the bonnet needing to be open did not survive on the original thread. I was wondering why there was no love or at least being told I was wrong.
I checked it twice at the time, but I now have my bonnet switch bypassed so can't check easily again.
This is the sort of thing that can't wait till tomorrow, its not that cold, someone should go out to the shed and start the engine and then check it!

The things we do for our fellow members. I lost 3 fingers to frostbite but I found that on my MY13 D4 simply having the bonnet popped was enough to show the oil level. Did not need to press the cruise control and doing so without the bonnet open produced no result. Where can I send my doctor's bill for the frostbite?[bigrolf]

I think I may be missing something here (apart from a brain that is) but doesn't waiting a few minutes allow the oil to drain down and give an accurate reading? I'm never in a big rush these days and I check it when the Cooks in the shops wasting money again so a 10 min. wait while watching the loonies parking is nothing.
But I suppose as our local rag keeps telling us, our lives are so busy these days we haven't got time to waste which explains a lot of motoring behaviour actually.[bighmmm]

You can check the oil level first up while cold, ignition on, before you start the vehicle.
