Have a noise from the front LH of my 08 disco done 143k at a recent service I asked about the noise but they said it was tyres (coopers) , it sound more metallic , I thought wheel bearing type or gear type noise but not convinced it is tyres .Any ideas ?

Doubt if it's tyres - but very easy to check.
Swap the front left tyre out with another and see if the noise moves / changes. [wink11]
Failing that - could be any one of a number of causes. I recently had a noise and some "grabbing" coming from the front end, which I originally suspected as either a wheel bearing or a CV joint. It was the centre diff lock engaging when it shouldn't have been, and the effects of diff "wind-up" were what I had been hearing. Managed to correct the problem using GAP IID Tool. [wink11]

A metallic hiss sound from the front passenger side on a D3 (diesel?) can be a turbo failing.
Should be easily picked up by a LR specialist.

How did you manage to fix it with the IID tool? I'm having similar issues.

There are two "calibration" sequences / programs relevant to the Transfer Case in the IID Tool programming. Run both of these. [wink11]
You should only need to run one of the programs to fix your problem (the other calibrates the hi/low range selection) - but I found that the problem with the centre diff lock was cleared but then returned if I ran only the calibration relevant to that function. When I ran both calibration sequences the following day, the problem was cleared and has not since returned.

Lower control arms? My 08 D3 started with a quiet rattling sound on the front LHS that gradually got worse. But that was at 70k, not 143k.

I had what sounds like tyres and that's what dealer indicated, it's ended up being front diff. It seems to sound like it's in the left hand side and can be confused with tyres.

And that's seemingly not uncommon these days.

I can confirm that anything less than the best fail. I had two bearmachs in a row fail within a few thousand kms

Fronts do look a lot easier than the rear due to replacing the whole hub assembly in one piece.
I'm considering doing all 4 for piece of mind on the next trip though, then i won't carry them as spare parts anymore, significantly bringing down weight...
Not sure which is the better option though, carrying them in case one goes or changing them all and hope that prevents failure.. 215k kms old now.

Good that it was only a front wheel bearing assembly, the rears arent so simple.
and just to add, when the turbo on a D3 is on its way out, it doesnt whistle.... its a metal to metal sound like a wheel bearing on its way out.
