I've got a '78 2 door classic with bog standard 3.5
It looks like the water pump has started leaking, possibly around the shaft, can I rebuid this or do I have to shell out the $200 odd for a newy?

My Disco's doing the same thing, I asked the question of the local LR guru here.
He informed me that it's a replacement job.
Have a look at the "for sale" section, there's a thread relating to water pumps that may have some useful info for you.

FWD's or Roverdrive are both under $200 for a replacement, mine was $165 a few years ago. I reckon they can be rebuilt using a universal shaft/ bearing but its a pr@ck of a job.

Supercrap have a powermax water pump for $165.23.
The model number is W2614 (best to double check this) you'll find it on page 64 of the book hanging near the shelves in store. Providing it's the same edition I was looking at of course. It's under the Rover section, not Land Rover.
Supercrap don't keep these in stock so they'll have to order one for you.
Ordered today, it'll be in the store tommorrow. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Which ever way, don't forget the thread sealant on the long bolts that go through into the water jacket (from memory).

do you mean your supposed to put the gasket sealant on the bolt threads too, thought just on the mating surfaces, (paper type gasket) ???
