View Full Version : To colour code or not to colour code

I have just moved from a fully equipped Land Cruiser to a Discovery 4 MY16.5 TDV6. I know there is hours of "discussions" around a camp fire about that shift in vehicle. But to the point of this post.

I want to fit an ARB bull bar (Summit bar) but do I get it colour coded?

Now the kicker, my D4 is Santorini Black. I know powder coating is black but it's not the same shade.

Does anyone have a Santorini Black Disco that has a colour coded bar?

My thoughts/question:

Worth the price difference
Look ( I want a real show piece, best options, make the Toyota / Nissan drivers question their life choices)
or take the bull bar, rock sliders and roof rack and match the colour of the powder coating later

No. Get it colour matched or colour coordinated.

Colour codes are used to indicate variations or sizes, etc., e.g., resistor colour codes, wiring colour codes. [bigrolf]

Sorry.

To Colour match or not to colour match THAT is the question

I don't think the Roo's really worry too much about the colour of the bull bar they run into, Anyway in a year or so it will be covered in bugs and scratches and you will be wondering why you spent all those extra quids colour matching the bar in the first place. [bigwhistle]

I would get it the same as the car with black. (i.e. Not powder coated)

Agree with the others - if the vehicle were any other colour it would be a flip of the coin, but the powder coated black will look wrong against the black of the vehicle if you don't get it matched. :)

I am not a fan of the all black look (particularly wheels). Are there any other significant colours on the car that you could match to highlight the bar ?

Always get it colour coded. I have a Fuji White D4. So glad I got the ARB bar colour code matched.

Depends on your personal taste. [wink11]

Mine's Fuji White too, and I would not have a colour matched bar on it for quids. Prefer the black on white look any day - but that's just my personal taste. [thumbsupbig]

I agree, it is personal taste. I agonised for a while about whether to go with the contrast like you did or colour matched. Hereis my colour matched version. The OP may get some extra ideas?

I saw a Jeep the other day with his ARB bar colour coded to the same red the car was and it looked really good. But for me it'll be black on white as BMKal's D4 is. But I may well have the bar extra painted before fitting as I don't like the original ARB powder coat as it doesn't look good after a couple of years out front.
Or I may go barless....... [wink11]

I certainly prefer my girl barless...

I've got bronze. I've seen it colour coded - front cover of the ARB brochure but I'd be interested to see it black as well like the other accessories. Still, won't be buying one anytime soon. Too hard for this occasional tourer to justify

It looks like you have the delux bar on the facelift discovery - did it fit ok? I want the summit bar on my pre-facelift version

Mine is colour matched to the white vehicle, never again.
It shows too many marks, and there is slight surface rust on some of the sharp edges of the bar.

I will go back to black next time,as i have had on all my previous vehicles.

On the white vehicles definitely black accessories imho.

on the darker shades colour coding does look good, but the pc does fade quite quick as it’s not the same as auto I have also seen the corrosion on the lighter pc bars, not pretty. A mate of mine had a powder coated OL bar fitted to his Defender, within 3 months it was replaced under warranty because they didn’t do the surface prep properly and it rusted on all the corners.

(Again in my opinion) the OP’s black car, with different shade of black bar, but with matching shade of rack and snorkel looks great, I wouldn’t change it.

Have had the bar on for over 3 years now. Absolutely no problems with it. Fitting wasn't an issue. I got the ARB bar put on by MacArthur Land Rover at Narellan. I think they "sub-contract" it out to ARB just down the road. However, wanted to get it installed by a dealer. Done in a day no probs. Not a winch bar, wern't available at time but not sure if I would have gone for one anyway. Still happy that went for colour matching. No problems with paint. Only managed to put 3 roos out of their miserable existence with the bar so far. No mark on the bar or vehicle as yet.
