Hi there,

Has anyone here managed to install a single DIN head unit into a Series II disco? If so, what did you do to get it to fit nicely.

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers

Luke

I really do not understand the question.
A DIN opening is a standard size, thats why its DIN.
ANY DIN stereo wil fit. Just watch the depth, but they are mostly the same.

Remove the original mounting bracket which is the thing still in the hole and fit the one for the new unit, by bending the tangs over. Every new unit will come with a fascia trim that fits around the hole to cover it. You may have to neatly trim the surround , if it is too big.

The hardest job is to cut and crimp the various wires.
suggest you get the wiring diagram colours, then write them on the equivalents on the installation sheet of the new unit.
I did this last week to my wife's Mazda where I fitted a Pioneer single disc unit.

Dont cut and crimp, its not necessary.

Discos have an ISO std plug arrangement. So for whatever head unit you decide to fit buy a $15.00 Aerpro harness to suit...

Eg: Pioneer to ISO, Alpine to ISO etc...

This makes the installation plug and play (pray?)

Hey thanks for your reply!

Sorry if my question was confusing. Just looking at the CD player in the disco (series 2), it doesnt look to me to be standard DIN sizing. To me it looks far taller than a standard single DIN stereo. If this is not the case then that makes things much easier for me! Ill check it out when i get home tonight.

As for the blown bulbs and cd jamming, thats 1/2 the reason im replacing too! Exactly the same. No lights on any of the buttons, and 1/2 the display is gone! Ive also got a pioneer mp3 unit sitting around.

And as for a pioneer -> iso plug, this could be a beautiful thing!

Cheers for your replies guys,

Hey seqfisho,

What speakers did you use when you upgraded the head unit, as the factory ones are useless.???

I have a nice set of 6x9's but I didn't want to cut up the factory interior to install them.

Any one else have any ideas/examples of speaker upgrades.??

Cheers

I'm still running the factory units ATM

When I got my head unit I inquired with the shop and the guy showed me some nice 4" models that he said would perform well as I expressed that I didnt want to cut up the doors/trim, but I dont remember to brand or price

Doesn't make much difference ATM as I cant hear the radio over the missus and child 8O https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Don't think I've ever heard 4" speakers, any price or brand, that didn't sound like cr*p.

I have found that the Jaycar 6inch round (not Response but next one down)are good ,mated to a Jaycar 84Wx2 amp under the seat.
In a 92 Rangie there are cutouts for premium speakers in the back of the door bottoms at the front.
I was able to cut out the blanks and put the Jaycars there. I had already fitted a pair of Jaycar 4inch in the original position at the top front of each door and I linked the speakers via a capacitior to use the 4inch as tweeters.
There is very limted room for the magnets in a Rangie at the top, so you need speakers with small magnets. I assume a Disco1 at least is probably the same.
If you have the premium sound you should not need speakers and if you don't then there must be blanks all over the place for additional speakers. Just have a look at the top model and see where the speakers go.
While I do not have killer base the detail and accuracy of my setup is excellent.
PS I used to be Sanyo In Car Entertainment Manager in the early 80s and have been on several listening panels for home and car sound.

Yes your right the DIIs DIN is much taller than the D1 and as usual the after market ones don't fit  you'll have to get a single DIN player installed and have the rest of the space filled in.

Ihave inquired myself as the 6 stacker that comes standard in the Disco is crap, jumps and skips on tar, we turn it off on the dirt.

Although it has improved since i blew it out with compressed air.

DIN stands for Deutsch Industrie Normal and specifies that the size of the aperture in the dashboard should be 50MMx180MM. That is why I said that all DIN radios are the same , because they are.
It appears from the photo that The Disco 11 may have a non DIN aperture.
Some car manufacturers are breaking the system to try for whatever reason to stop people buying aftermarket. I guess they want to force people to buy their premium sound system!!!

If the Disco unit is deeper than a DIN aperture, you will have to get a spacer to fill the gap. When I was car sound man for Sanyo, some aftermarket companies supplied these to radio fitters. I imported several kits from Japan that Sanyo sold.
So if the aperture is NOT DIN then you should go to a radio fitter and buy a spacer, or you can probably make your own from a bit of coated steel.
the width will most probably be the same as DIN , so it will only be the depth.

OK, the space for a radio/CD/tape in the DII is 1/2 again taller than a standard radio/CD/Tape player not a common size and none of the after market manufacturers make a radio/CD/Tape player in that size so we found out, the depth is fine so most will have something to fit the DII, the radio place at Blakehurst in Sydney will do one for the Disco, according to the guy i spoke to he's done a few Discos and Rangies.

I put a pioneer in the dash of my s2 and it went straight in, i purchased a 1/2 DIN tray from Strathfied but did not need it. The standard Discon sterio has a lip which brings it out flush. Don,t worry about this a standard DIN one goes in fine.

Doors in a s2 are slightly over 5" the best speakers I could get as did not want to cut holes were 5" 3 way round Clarion ones 4125pr at Autobahn.
Front and rear door hole sizes are the same.

cheers

Looks from these responses that a DIN unit goes in OK.
But if you are desperate , put 1.5 DIN in Google and you will see many available in the USA.( Pioneer ,Audiovox)
You may be able to buy one on the internet but be careful that it has adjustable frequencies and frequency steps for FM.

Go back to the first page of this thread... Theres pics there

The Aperture is 1 DIN, the front facia on the D2 is a lip that makes it appear 1 1/2 Din size.

ANY Radio shop that tells you they'll make a spacer is a rip off artist and should be avoided.

Using the ISO -> unit loom it should take anyone less than 10 minutes to fit a new unit.

When we upgraded BUB the "Sound In Motion" guy said
"no room for bigger in standard front door hole" so just put good ones in,,
"can go 1" bigger at rear" --cool just do it, Alpines all round including new head unit.
(put the SPECIAL Rosignol radio /cassette with swizel stick -- in the boat!!)

added 12 in sub to drivers side rear storage, (very heavy grade steel mesh on front:wink: )
added amp to drivers side back seat kick panel storage,

and Bobs your uncle!!

(had already disregarded the guard aeriel and installed a AM/FM steel whip aeriel to bullbar)

and NO Zook,, there are NO pics. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

just off the top of googles head---

Settled in 1847 and proclaimed a City in 1905, Maryborough was the port for wool, timber and sugar industries and the supply centre for the Gympie goldfields. Some 22,000 migrants entered Australia directly from Europe by sailing ship through the Port of Maryborough from 1859.

Maryborough has a significant historical precinct and became a City of regional influence. With golden memories of the past, a bright future, modern facilities, 19th century charm and friendly people, Maryborough is a great place to live, raise a family, establish a business or retire.

Some 3 hours drive north of Brisbane (the capital City of Queensland), Maryborough, with a population of 26,000 is the dominant commercial centre for the surrounding local government areas of Woocoo; Tiaro and West Hervey Bay.

Any suggestions on make to fit in my S2 Disco? Not after a CD or Tape function, but would like to be able to plug/hard wire my iPod Nano straight into it plus play the radio.

If I update my speakers, do I need to update the loom as well? Also if I want a much better sound than the stardard LR system do I need to look at amps and subs?

Don't want to spend tons, but as my CD stacker is busted and my lights on the head unit have gone, a new system and sound upgrade could be on the cards.

Appreciate any feedback including how easy it might be to install of whether someone else should do it for me.

Aye, Mick
