Hi
Has anyone had any experience with boost rings and pins to improve performance? From what I have found on the internet these seem to be a cheap, simple to install option that significantly improves the amount of fuel delivered. Any issues with high mileage engines?

I have a boost pin on order.
In preparation for the install I have turned the existing pin to max fuel and trying to control the smoke with the star wheel.
The star wheel is 6 turns up from the bottom. Smoke screw is wound out so as to have zero influence.
This is in a 130 cab/chassis with a disco transfer case. 260k on the odometer.
So far the results are good with a little excess smoke down low on acceleration.
What sold me on the boost pin is it should get rid of the excess fuel down low.
Drivability at these settings is greatly improved. Fuel economy is an unknown at present.

Id be keen to see what additional difference it makes. If you dont mind me asking who did you order it from?

What EGTs are you getting?

What EGTs are you getting?
580 on the egt pre turbo so far.
It will climb to 500 quite easily, keep pushing it and 600+ would soon come around.

Funny how things happen,my Tdi started to play up on sunday, one minute I had 10psi the next 15 so yesterday I took the compensator cap off only to find two copper washers on the boost shaft????.The reason it stared to play up was the washers were catching on the shaft jamming it,the only explanation is the so called Bosch expert that fiddled with the tune when I lived in Kalgoorlie 5 years ago put them there,no one else has touched it.Anyway I was going to fit a boost pin and changed the boost line from the turbo to the manifold, and replace the leaking throttle shaft ''o'' ring. Hi jboot51
Just wondering if you have fitted your boost pin yet and what difference has it made?
I am keen to improve the on road hill climbing capability if at all possible and was hoping this may be the answer.

Ok, here goes.
I installed the boost pin and did not adjust anything else.
Pre boost lag was really bad. The engine struggled upto 10 psi, then took off extremely hard through to 19 psi. "rolling coal" is the term I would use for the exhaust cloud that followed me.
EGT readings are way too high. While doing an overtaking manoeuvre at 100kph, it took 6 seconds for the egt to go from 400 to 680.
So there is too little fuel off boost and too much fuel at full boost.
I have turned the main fuel screw back a full 1/2 turn, the star wheel is now 2.5 turns from the bottom and smoke screw is 1.5 turn down from the neutral position. I have also added a 1mm washer to the nylon stopper on the fuel pin to try and stop the delivery of max fuel.
Egts are still dangerous.
More tweaking will be carried out, but at the moment the original pin at full fuelling was better to drive.

In a 110. I put a boost pin in after I fitted a VNT, rather than adjust the pump. Smoking was an issue (taking off and hard acceleration) so I increased pre-load on the pin by adjusting the star wheel, and also adjusted the top nut to give it more time in the low fuel position. It helped somewhat.
I fitted a timing ring (boost ring) a couple of weeks ago and fitted it with the recommended number of washers to start with. I didn't notice any improvement to acceleration at all, but I think there is less smoke at full throttle.
At freeway speeds I use an overdrive, so keep revs to around 2,000rpm @ 100kph, so I may notice better dynamic advance response if I stayed in 5th and got the revs to 2,500. There's no issue accelerating to 120kph for overtaking in sixth, but that was the case before the ring as well. I fitted the ring the same time I replaced a leaking exhaust manifold gasket, so the lower noise might be giving me a perception of less power, thus cancelling out the perceived improvement.
I'm undecided about the efficacy of the ring, but if it reduces smoke it's worth it. I noticed that it's a popular mod with big diesels in the USA using the Bosch pump, so figure it's been tested beyond the Land Rover community.
I'll drive it awhile and talk to more people before adjusting the ring for a bit more timing pin travel.

How are people going with the boost rings and pins?

I removed my boost pin a while back.

OK thks that says it all.
Still seems undecided whether the boost ring is worthwhile?
Tricky to get at without getting the air con compressor out of the way - can that be done without de gassing it?

The ac compressor will swing out of the way without degassing it.
