300Tdi boost pins and rings

Hi

Has anyone had any experience with boost rings and pins to improve performance? From what I have found on the internet these seem to be a cheap, simple to install option that significantly improves the amount of fuel delivered. Any issues with high mileage engines?

I have a boost pin on order.

In preparation for the install I have turned the existing pin to max fuel and trying to control the smoke with the star wheel.
The star wheel is 6 turns up from the bottom. Smoke screw is wound out so as to have zero influence.
This is in a 130 cab/chassis with a disco transfer case. 260k on the odometer.

So far the results are good with a little excess smoke down low on acceleration.
What sold me on the boost pin is it should get rid of the excess fuel down low.
Drivability at these settings is greatly improved. Fuel economy is an unknown at present.

580 on the egt pre turbo so far.
It will climb to 500 quite easily, keep pushing it and 600+ would soon come around.

Funny how things happen,my Tdi started to play up on sunday,one minute I had 10psi the next 15 so yesterday I took the compensator cap off only to find two copper washers on the boost shaft????.The reason it stared to play up was the washers were catching on the shaft jamming it,the only explanation is the so called Bosch expert that fiddled with the tune when I lived in Kalgoorlie 5 years ago put them there,no one else has touched it.Anyway I was going to fit a boost pin and changed the boost line from the turbo to the manifold,and replace the leaking throttle shaft ''o'' ring. Just wondering if you have fitted your boost pin yet and what difference has it made?

I am keen to improve the on road hill climbing capability if at all possible and was hoping this may be the answer.

Ok, here goes.
I installed the boost pin and did not adjust anything else.
Pre boost lag was really bad. The engine struggled upto 10 psi, then took off extremely hard through to 19 psi. "rolling coal" is the term I would use for the exhaust cloud that followed me.
EGT readings are way too high. While doing an overtaking manoeuvre at 100kph, it took 6 seconds for the egt to go from 400 to 680.

So there is too little fuel off boost and too much fuel at full boost.
I have turned the main fuel screw back a full 1/2 turn, the star wheel is now 2.5 turns from the bottom and smoke screw is 1.5 turn down from the neutral position. I have also added a 1mm washer to the nylon stopper on the fuel pin to try and stop the delivery of max fuel.
Egts are still dangerous.
More tweaking will be carried out, but at the moment the original pin at full fuelling was better to drive.
