The Cone of Silence

A week ago I enjoyed a wonderful weekend out exploring some of the beautiful tracks around Newnes and managed to give Monty a pretty good seeing-to getting up 'The Steps' along with two other Defenders. All great fun and once back on the black top the following day, all seemed in good order.
Fast forward to last Friday afternoon, on the way home from a trip to see Daniel in Mortdale for a new Pop-Top seal and some electrical trickery. Approaching Richmond, I started to hear a grinding noise coming from the front axle. It didn't matter if I was in gear, accelerating, turning a corner or coasting in neutral; the noise was particular to the rotation of the axle i.e. when i slowed down, so did the noise.
I figured I must have caught a wee stone in the brake but then it got worse. I nursed Monty home for the next 5kms and then took the wheel off to have a look at what it was.
I'm not entirely sure HOW this happened.....but happen it did.

From the look of the colour of the steel, this was done a while ago so I assume it was the weekend in Newnes. Thank goodness the bolt had lodged itself and hadn't dropped back inside there on the motorway....that could have been very nasty indeed.
So, poor Monty had to go on a flat bed. I HATE it when that happens. It's pretty rare, thankfully, but to add a significant shake of salt to the wound, my Postie bike rear tyre valve decided to let go that afternoon and my girlfriend's car decided to leave it's throttle cable on Military Road.
A bad weekend for motoring and a good one for the NRMA.
UGH
I'll provide more detail once the boys at Ayres open it up and have a look. Not the first time they've seen this happen though, which is somewhat concerning.
