All the wiring harnesses will be missing the wiring so unless a donor vehicle is available to rob for virtually all the wiring then IMO not practical to convert.

Could be doable with factory air struts and aftermarket controllers?

You could probably do a really good custom set up using factory airbags and the rest aftermarket negating finding the original wiring looms and ecu etc.

There are also legal/ADR considerations: if the vehicle didn't come with factory air suspension, the controls to alter height are not allowed to be accessible from the driver's seat. I'm guessing to stop low-rider-style bouncing, etc. ;)

The D3S without EAS also missed out on TR. I remember it had traction control switches similar to the early L322.

Plenty of vehicles with after market air bags fitted.

Can you just fit the air struts and have an air line to each , and normal tyre valves to a good access spot , the same as aftermarket airbags fitted to cars etc . ?

Yes, but then no ability to adjust the ride height on the fly nor cross axle articulation although the latter only requires a solenoid at front and rear to achieve.

Just buy a air sprung D3 - far more than coils around and then no conversion hassles.

If he had his heart set on a manual then there would be no choice but to buy and convert.

Why do you actually want the air? Will it suit you just to put some airbagman bags inside the springs?
