Hammer it in to the end of your jack to extend the reach; as it now has further to span to reach the jacking holes in the chassis.

Interesting, I dont recall that page in the instructions, but i have a bottle jack that lifts by the axle and nothing that resembles the part in the picture. Was a different jack used on earlier models?

Defenders should all have a jack like that one in the pictures. If Pumas don't it is due to a cost cutting measure. The jack slots into the holes in the front bullhorns and the rear crossmember. Of course, you need a bottle jack as well, but the proper jack is very handy for some recovery stuff as well as suspension work.

Ahh ok, well I certainly don't have that style of jack at all so this part is of no use with the bottle jack.

I've yet to use a hi-lift jack, but always assumed I would need a bullbar and/or rear bumper with the jacking points built in to use it.

Hi Dave

I tend to use the hi-lift jack on the side of the vehicle - the rock sliders are a good point to lift, as well as bullbar and bumper of course. I can't remember if your 90 had sliders?

Hi Bobby,

Yeah I dont have sliders, only the stock side steps, but I was never supplied with the hi lift jack when I picked up the car anyhow so I'm wondering if puma 90s didn't get it if you got one with Monty. At least I know what that part is now :)

Yep JLR ditched the old defender jack on pumas. Fortunately I have one from the Tojo days.
Those pin lifters with the old hi lift are definately handy.

Hi-lift jacks are an aftermarket purchase that a lot of people make because they're useful in the bush, especially when you have a puncture and the diffs are buried. I used to keep mine on the rear of the car as you'll see lots of people doing but it kept getting covered in mud and dust so I keep it inside the car now.

Ok, need more help from the experienced folk on here ☺. After more research I discovered that there are factory hi lift jacking points both front and back on the puma. However it was pot luck what style of jack you got. Seems like 90s and 130s got bottles and 110s got either bottle or factory hi lift. Anyhow, im now looking at a hi lift brand jack for a chrissy present for myself and in the rovacraft catalogue pg 92 they list them along with part 'DA2244' which is the jacking point adaptor for defenders.

Now, if the factory hi lift requires the extension after I installed the A frame bar, my question is whether the hi lift defender adapter is long enough to safely reach.

Cheers,
Dave.

I have a high lift & adaptor if you want to try before you buy.[wink11]

Just a quick note, the hi-lift style jack wasn't used on 130's as the tray overhang past the cross member is too great.

I still carried a hi-lift though.

Thanks Mark, that's much appreciated! However
I might be able to figure out what'll work for me if you can help with some measurements.
Can you tell me the total length of the adapter, and the length of 'rod only' section?

I found that frontrunner make 2 defender hi lift adapters that are 250mm and 350mm Extended Hi-Lift Jack Adaptor - 250mm - by Front Runner | JACK & ACCESSORIES | RECOVERY (https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/au/recovery-equipment/jack-accessories/front-runner-extended-hi-lift-jack-adaptor-250mm.html) and they state the overall total length of the 250mm adapter is 400mm.

and with the A frame bar installed, the distance from the outside edge of the bar to the start of the jacking point is 160mm, so theoretically I can get up to 90mm inside the jacking point with the front runner adapter, though I figure there needs to be a bit of clearance between the jack and the car. Only other question then is how deep is recommended for safe jacking and how far would yours penetrate if the body of the jack was 160mm from the start of the mounting point?

Many thanks!
Dave.

I did consider wording it differently, but I thought we were all grown ups here. Obviously I was wrong.:tease: :tease:
