Hey Guys,

I bought a 2006 D3 4.0L a month or so ago and I am in the processing of doing all the oils.

Did the engine oil and filter today and noticed that the previous owner had a Mahle OC298 oil filter installed.
It was different to the one I ordered, so I looked it up and it is the filter used on the TD5 diesel...

Slightly concerning I guess, because it is suited to a diesel engine and oil.
Do you guys think it wouldn't have worked very well?
Maybe they used TD5 oil also.

Anyways, changed the oil and used the right filter and it seems a bit better overall. Maybe placebo haha.

The TD5 filter is slightly shorter and the pressure relief valve setting is slightly lower than the 4.o litre filter (1.2 bar vs 1.6bar) but I wouldn't worry too much.

Maybe its a trick that is actually beneficial...or cheaper.

The PRV thing is what stopped me from saying WTF are you worrying about. Surely the filtration would be fine... Seems like it's a 'worry too much' thing.

Hey, good call, worry. And ask. Ask some more.
