Hi Guys,
I know a genius .... who doesn't need to be named [bigwhistle] that dipped the petrol tank on the tractor too see if there was enough fuel in it to cut the grass..... and managed to drop the stick [bigsmile1] I can see it down there with a torch floating happily. I'm not really keen on it breaking up and making a mess of the fuel system. Surely there is other poeple out there as stupid as ... er ... "this person" so have a smart way of retrieving the stick.
The simplest way I can think of it to just fill the tank ... It will sit there floating at the top for me to grab with two fingers .... So I looked at the specs. The damn tank hold 80litres  I don't have enough $$$ to spare to fill it (not to mention filling it 20litres at a time from a drum is bloody hard work!).

disconnect the fuel line, drain the tank, fill with water, retrieve stick, drain water, flush (maybe a couple of times with the same 5 litres of juice), refill tank with the good fuel you have left.

Hi,
Length of copper 13mm pipe.
Length of whipper line cord.
Pass a loop of cord down the pipe and snare the stick.
Pull tight and retrieve said stick.
You may need a 90 degree elbow on the bottom of the pipe if the stick is going to be at an angle that jams coming out.
Cheers

The press button flexible grabbers used for making gardens in a big bottle would be your friend. Big nursery would have some, about 2 foot long.
There are so many ways of doing this, I'm surprised it needs posting. Good luck with it and let us all know the outcome.

Chop a hunk of fabric from your wife/partners stockings/pantyhose. Tie a strip of it to a much sturdier stick than that used by the clown who caused all this, then poke it in the tank and wrap it onto the floater. The little fibres will hook on to the stick and won't let go. Fish it out

That's a bit self serving, why can't he use his own panty-hose?

Well... you see.... I thought everyone could have a bit of a laugh at my expense.... being diesel, the stick will probably not break down for a long time. So i have plenty of time to "get to it" :)

If you can fish using only a stick and a bit of fishing line .. does it work the other way around too?
Attach fish to a bit of line, and get it to grab the stick.
Question is, what type of fish would be best to use to catch a stick, and would the fish survive a dunking in diesel just enough to grab hold of the stick.
if that's impractical, then #7 for me too .. handy tool they are.
Q. how large is the filler neck?(2", 4" ??) .. ie. what sized implement could be used to retrieve?

A dogfish should fetch it!!!

Then you would need a dogfish catcher !

Then you would need a dogfish catcher !
Could be easier to fish for a dogfish using a new stick, then to stick with a fish tho.
So a solution could be to chuck in a dogfish to fetch the stick, find another stick and fish for the dogfish hoping that the dogish fetched the original stick, and that the new stick doesn't somehow get pulled into the tank.
Of course the issue would be that if this fails after many repeated attempts you could end up with a tank full of fish'n'sticks .. which, actually, may not be as bad as it sounds.
Fill it with enough fish'n'sticks and using displacement theory, would then require less volume of diesel to fill it up.
Thus assisting with the issue of:
.... The damn tank hold 80litres  I don't have enough $$$ to spare to fill it ....

Being a land rover owner I would have thought that you would have had a box set of these. I have one and surprise surprise it has been used nearly every time I have worked on the Disco.

I'm writing for someone too embarrassed to post here who wants to know how to get a stick out of a tractor fuel tank...as well as nylon chord, panty hose, copper pipe, long reach grabber, long nose pliers, wood magnet, with fingers stuck in filler neck...
Get a longer stick next time.[smilebigeye]

Reminds me of the days when we were kids we used to clean yellowbelly caught in the local dam on top of the shearers quarters water tank.
Of course you know what happened one day,one fell in[bigsad]
I think in the end we could see it with a torch, and we ended up spearing it,and getting it out that way.
Parents weren't real happy.....
