What did that kit set you back mate?Sorry didn't see this message, I assume you were asking about the new steering gear I fitted Straya day weekend. The Gywn Lewis 4x4 stuff was £275 incl the freight the track link was from Rock Ware in the USA, this part was ordered on a whim after reading this excellent write up on defender mods: Going Bush (http://www.goingbush.com/defender.html)
It ended up costing me $300 as I had to get through a third party to export. With hindsight the Sumo bar straight version would have been just as good.
New OME steering stabliser from ARB, a cutting disk for the grinder and a 1&5/16 socket (drop arm nut) took care of the rest of my christmas bonus.

Cheers

Not quite sold on the idea, probably got in and out of the defer 8 times today......although at least the door handle isn’t jamming into my leg.

Still can’t tar them as unreliable , just a tad more work to keep them legal and going rather than just running

Yesterday replaced the clutch master cylinder. A few of weeks ago I noticed a drop of something on the floor under the clutch pedal. "I wonder what that is?"

Next trip to town I noticed it was bigger, and I could smell brake fluid. So before the following trip I checked and topped up the fluid. Last week I dropped in to Burson's and got a master cylinder (they had it listed in their computer - I was certain they would have one because it is the most common M/C used on override trailer brakes). I was not able to get onto it before the next trip to town, and Wednesday- Thursday it was too wet - while I was working under cover, I was going to have to go to and fro, and also a bit concerned about using too much power for lighting as the sun was not helping, and we had already had two days of no sun.

So yesterday got into it. As I have found in the past, the easy way is to remove the whole pedal assembly - undo six bolts inside the footwell, undo the hydraulic pipe, lift and twist
90° to allow the footpad to clear the hole in the footwell (which on the Isuzu means removing the manifold to aircleaner pipe, and on this installation you also need to remove the relay that is secured under one of the screws holding the top cover on the pedal box.

Then just hold it in the vice and disassemble fully, laying the M/C aside, and the rest can then be cleaned of brake fluid and grease and general gunk. Grease was an issue - my pedal shaft has a grease nipple and it has been plentifully greased every service in an unsuccessful attempt to stop a squeaking pedal. The strip down left no doubt it is not the pedal shaft squeaking - it was very greasy, but the trunnion that pushes the piston rod was dry and shiny where it is in the pedal lever.

The new cylinder had a forked end on the piston rod, so this had to be replaced by the old one, and the adapter for the hydraulic pipe has to be transferred as well. Then reassemble everything. As I (later) remembered doing last time, I found that you have to put the trunnion in place before assembling the pedal into the box. The lower bolt holding the M/C is difficult even on the bench, almost impossible in the vehicle.

Before assembling it, while the various bits were going through their second lot of "degrease, hose down and allow to dry", I had removed the driver's floor mat, hosed it down and put it in the sun, and hosed out the driver's footwell and the area the pedal box sits on.

It only took about ten minutes to fit the pedal assembly and refit all the bits I had removed. Took about another five minutes to bleed the system from the pipe union at the M/C, and hose down the area.

The floor mat was dry by then, but the floor was not - should have opened the windows. So I opened them, and put the mat back in this morning.

The pride and joy ('11 90) has been off the road since late January - timing chain packed it in (driving through suburbia at 60km/h). And finally got to pick it up on Thursday. Went for a recon engine in the end (from land rover; yes, I hear you). Had gotten a few quotes - long engines to complete second hand engines, ranging between $16k and $22k. Went for middle ground, kept the original motor with a plan of hopefully being able to recondition and keep as a spare. Suffice to say, additional mods will have to be curtailed for a bit (bar the Brown Davis tank which I've had in the garage for a year now, so got that fitted at the same time - nice to almost double the fuel capacity; got a bit tight fuel wise in the Territory a while back).
Apologies for any odd vertical/horizontal photo flips - system doesn't seem to like vertical pics...

I had a tail/brake light fill with water, lens was cracked. Cleaned it out, terminals were rusted up, so cleaned them, turned the lense over so the crack was at the bottom and ordered an LED light kits. Fitted them last Thursday, simple plug n play. They look a shed load better and quite bright. Funnily enough, one of my sequential side guard indicators crapped out, but started working again once the LED's were fitted. Traced and found the rattle in the B pillar on both sides of the car. I thought the wife's side was just her [bigwhistle] but lubed up the door catches and it all went away. Probably too much bush driving (NEVER!!). Went camping, self isolated (no one else turned up) and self medicated with a couple of bottles of whiskey.
A good time was had admiring the scenery

Have fitted LED’s to all my defenders but found on the 300Tdi and the Td5 that the wiring need to be reversed to get the polarity correct. The Puma was plug and play!

Yeah Simon

I read on the fine print that I may have to swap a few wires around. I wasn't looking forward to that as they are quite short on the Puma.
I re-read the destruction's and noted it was only on pre 2008? cars, But luckily they were plug n play on mine. They look great too.

They make a significant difference and I think important around where I live as we get a lot of fog and with the standard lighting someone can be right on you before they see you, assuming the bulbs haven’t blown or are full of that bulb fluid!

Can I ask what the cost is for an LED upgrade kit?

Also, with the LED's, is quality (or lack of) telling on the cheaper ones?

Depends a little on if you have a fog light and want the reverse lamp upgraded. However the last one I bought directly from the UK last year was around $320 landed here. It was WIPAC which I think was also fitted to some special models.

You can get them locally from KLR and others. Pays to shop around ;-)

With working from home and not needing the truck for the commute I decided to get a few jobs done on the 110.

I have however started to think I may not have it back together by next week when I start back in the office.

Started with fixing a gearbox leak, took out all the floor, and then thought I'll do a minor rust repair to the driver's side footwell and maybe add some sound proofing while it was all out.

Then discovered a leaking battery and rusty battery box, new battery, rewire.

Now I've found some dodgy wiring behind the dash which fell apart when removing so in goes a Raptor dash....

Wish me luck for this weekend.

I did, with much trepidation!

Thanks to a phone call to JC I got into it.

4mm (I had a Cobalt 4mm) pilot hole to set the position (grease the drill bit)
Clean up with vacuum to remove swarf
Then correct size drill for the tap. Same deal, greased to catch the swarf.
Clean up with shop vac,
Then started engine for a second to blow out the hole.
Shut down
Grease up Tap and cut thread (this bit is the most worrying)
Again vac clean and start engine to blow any swarf either out or into exhaust,
Shut down and fit probe.

Whilst the rest of my car is in pieces due to double din upgrade, CB, drawer system and false floor construction etc etc. I thought I would distract you with something I've wanted to do for quite a while but put on the backburner - a kick panel for the rear ladder. I found that years of muddy boot toes climbing up and down the ladder was scratching the paintwork. Plus the NSW number plate has to be bent to make it around the ladder bracket so this helps to flatten it quite a bit. I etch primed and painted it with satin gloss black enamel paint to match the other chequer plating. Simple yes, but I needed some runs on the board and I'm quite pleased with the result [biggrin]

I bought it in from the UK (Rimmer Bros) a while ago it cost £180 including the freight, ouch.
I have also ended up with another brand new genuine LR one from a bulk buy of parts a short time ago from another member. PM me if interested, its the gauge only but its easy enough to wire.

Also finished the job, a write up under soundproofing a defender in tech chatter.

Realistically - probably not. They were pretty pitted from the sharp gravel on the road out to the farm though and I guess those stones would have hit the discs if they weren't in place. My work Maverick had similar guards (which also fell off) as did the Disco 3 so there must be a reason for them. There is a bit of a duct that might assist a bit with cooling as well.
Edit...
I did some googling and it seems the primary purpose of the shields is to reduce the amount of road borne spray hitting the rotors that could reduce braking efficiency. Probably more of an issue in the tropics or sunny England than here. Also reduces the amount of pad wear from road borne grit.

Son's Defender at the workshop,we pressure cleaned the complete vehicle, inside and out, after removing the front seats, and the rear draws.
Rear seats have been out for a couple of years.
Binned the rubbish quality mat that goes over the transmission tunnel and floor on both sides, front.
Binned the same rubbish quality mat that front seats and centre console goes on,console removed as well.
Have ordered new one's.
Painted tectyl all over underneath vehicle, where needed.and sprayed where difficult to access.Tectyl also inside battery box, tiny bit of surface rust, sorted.
Cleaned off all the inner door panels, and the dash, the roof lining came up very well, looks like new, amazingly.
Most of the internal screws and bolts had been replaced with stainless, years ago,so all were good.
Screws for door hinges surface rust, cleaned them up and used a tiny paint brush to coat them with colour matched paint, after priming. They came up really well.
Remove metal trim rear edge,at rear door, floor level, clean up,repaint and refit.
Refit brackets and rear seat, refit draws to rear.
Need to paint front seat frames as paint is flaking off, which is going to be a PITA job.
Cleaned off engine, and engine bay generally.
Need to replace rear ball joint as well, change all fluids, including brake fluid.
Also have waist level rubbers for rear windows on order, old ones badly perished.Strangely, fronts are fine.
Windscreen to be replaced, courtesy of a suicidal galah.

Paint to get a cut and polish later on.

So she is getting a well earned birthday.

Got the 2008 Puma back from the garage today. All the brake pipes were replaced as for some reason they were in a really bad rusted state. Even though the garage is closed due to the lockdown the owner phoned and told me to drop it out and he would do them as he had planned to do them but the Covid19 lock down came. So I left her out and left the keys in front bumper and he left her out for me to collect with the keys in the front bumper. The bill was in the cubby box and the bill for labour, new pipes made to fit, new nuts and brake fluid came to €230 or $375AUD which I will pay next week.
It was not a main Land Rover dealer but a local garage.

Found the time to drop the oil and filter. Been having excessive oil consumption, once almost bone dry and after last service down to lower third on dipstick. Land Rover indie said no excessive blow by, took turbo inlet hose off and turbo fine, no oil. The outlet might be a different story [bigwhistle]. Following suggestions from forum members I asked him to use a different oil, and make it 5W40. Asked for Penrite but he put in his usual brand to Ford spec. So I got sick of it and replaced it myself with Penrite HPR 5 Diesel 5W40. Now to see what happens re oil consumption.

Not sure what next step will be, injector seals? But no smoke, loss of power....fingers crossed Daisy will be happy with the Penrite and that will be the end of it.

Just wondering... but do u really need those stone deflector plates? We had one fail on our just outside Mt Dare and it caused the ABS to lock up the wheels. We just removed the fuses and kept going but continually had the ABS and Handbrake lights on until I got back home to brisbane... I'm thinking of removing the other one and going w/o totallyThe rear ones are a good idea, the rear discs become pock marked quickly on gravel roads when they're not there.

Changed all oils & filters - engine, gearbox, transfer box, front & rear diffs - & greased unis. The only filter I didn't replace was the air filter, it was surprisingly clean so I returned the new one to the cupboard & gave the old one a blast of compressed air & returned it to serve a few more thousand kilometers.
The 'service pit' that I incorporated into my backyard retaining wall years ago was very welcome & saved my back once again.

Nothing important to report, but I did put the pod back on the roof, after removing it when we got back from Tasmania in March.
Bought the pod second hand in Brisbane for $180 a while back, and it has proven to be very useful. New ones are about 3-4 times the price, depending on size, so it was a good buy.
When we were in Tassie I kept the folding chairs, firepit and solar blanket up there, sitting on the annex flooring mat for cushioning. Worked well.
'George' is due for a service and a couple of jobs too, when I get a tax return.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200723/adae28cba3be2b035ff08afdf8d0109a.jpg

After the full service on the Defender last week I thought I should give it a bit of a run so headed off to the Wagga area to visit oldest grandson & assist him with some mechanical & farm tasks. After a good run down, it wasn't long before the mountains (hills) were calling me to climb them - how does the song go? .........'Climb every mountain........'
Anyway, I did just that & the rewards were spectacular views in all directions.
What a magnificent country we live in!

Unfortunately I have to return to the 'big smoke' tomorrow, after cutting a few ton of firewood. But I'll be back!

An iconic photo. On one of my few trips to Australia I recall my brother showing me the hills around Northern NSW. 30+ years ago now so cannot remember locations. After walking around a hillside all morning we sat near ("Ants!" he said so it was near not under) an old tree similar to this but with a smaller view and ate our lunch. Reminds me of that trip.

Replaced the seals at both ends of the front prop shaft. (Actually paid someone to do it and got them to also replace the blown headlight bulb that happened on the way down to Yass!)

Drove home in the rain. (I really must try and find where the water is getting in on the driver's feet - it hasn't mattered during the drought) No problems, just a bit slower than usual. Came through next-door's place. Approaches to the river bridge very slippery, and the creek crossing was about a foot deep, but hard bottom (been stuck in there in quicksand once.)

Yesterday actually, & not far from you JD ........ after observing an unusually coloured sky at sunrise & replacing a split rubber cap on the front hub, I drove up the hill with the trailer and spent a few hours cutting a load of firewood for the grandson (who was working elsewhere on an irrigation system) before heading home via a very scenic alternate route. Followed the southern side of the Murrumbidgee River through beautiful grazing country & a bit of gravel road between Gundagai & Jugiong. Dropped into The George at Jugiong for a decent coffee before hitting the Hume back to Sydney. Was a very relaxing drive with the Defender running sweetly and an amazing lack of traffic, which according to a truckie has been that way since the VIC/NSW border closure.

Today's job.

After having the floor out during lockdown (the first one) and repairing some minor rust in the drivers footwell, I was surprised at the amout of old mud (and a little rust) sitting on the chassis despite thorough cleaning.

After tidying up the chassis outrigger I looked at options for keeping the mud from accumulating there in the first place.

Costly (with the freight) but the best design I found was from Gwyn Lewis 4x4, their front mudshield kit was fairy easy to fit and will prevent mud from both being flung onto the chassis outrigger and up the side of the truck.

It moves the front mud flap forward and after cutting away the bottom of the wheel arch flare a little it also sits out enough to stop the mud being flung up the doors.

Now with the canopy on, been playing with some drawers I bought second hand. An figuring out what I want to do in the tub. I think I prefer them stacked. Leaves room for the fridge on a custom slide and Drifta mini kitchen. Also plenty of room down the side for chairs and water tank or diesel tank up against the head board. The eldest boy was sifting through the AULRO app on my phone on the way back from the farm today and asked why I haven’t made a set of drawers yet for the back of the old girl
I’d drawn up what was going to suit my needs months ago and never had (made) time to put the plan into play
My goolies were feeling up to it so I told him he’d have to get off the bloody PlayStation when we got home and we’d see how we go knocking some up before we leave on Tuesday
So I dragged out the old drawings, **** I’d even done a cut list
Down to the big green shed
$150 later on some wood and screws (already had the sliders from my old 110 before it became a dual cab)
I dragged out the old triton workbench
3 hours of cutting drilling and screwing before the wife called us in for dinner
**** me we just about had them done
I’ll have to shoot off early in the morning and pickup a bit of boat carpet mount the runners and put them in
I thought I better post a couple of pics before I call it a night (I know everyone here likes to look at pictures)https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210110/c392a2d96187c5482ae192c7993688f5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210110/a66d9d010528a4748e8fe694cd66a9d9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210110/90335735ec6d67ad8dff7702c374bfbd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210110/545e40b98a4ae6a83b22b4041017342a.jpg

Nice. I am looking to do something similar in the near future. If you are looking for a tank, I think this may fit fore/aft next to your compressor

Not sure if the threads match the ARB fittings but may be able to adapt.

Do you keep the metal lid on the seat box or just the seat base. I am just wondering how hot it gets in there if the lid is on and the compressor running.

Anyone who has worked extensively on Series drum brakes which have similar springs will have learnt that there is always an easy way of doing these things.
In this case you attach the spring/s to the shoes first then, using a large screwdriver or suitable bar, you lever the shoes into position.

On the transmission brake Roger, the pin that holds one of the shoes on is in such a spot that access to rear of it, to stop it falling out when you are trying to refit the retaining cup, is near impossible to reach. It is tucked up between the transfer case and the backing plate. I did it with a really long screwdriver and was able to hold it in position firmly enough to get the cup back on, but it took a couple of hours.
I have drum brakes on the rear of the YOOT and can do them in no time be the method you described, but the transmission brake is a different beast.

I wrote a HowTo on this handbrake cable job a couple of years ago. Here is a quote from it!

Refit the spring loaded cup washer which retains the shoe in position. This is the most difficult part of the operation. It requires the back of the pin to be held from behind the backplate while the cup washer is centred on the spring & guided onto the pin end & then turned through 90 degrees to secure it. This is not easy to do with the brake unit still in place on the back of the transfer box. It is much easier to do on a flat surface. A 45 degree offset pair of pliers is useful to hold the pin from the front to stop it retracting while the cup washer is being installed. (It is even more difficult to deal with the RH shoe, as the pin cannot be reached from behind – hence the preference to remove the brake assembly from the vehicle to carry out this work.)It is worth it to invest in a Toledo 310256 - Brake Spring Compressor for about $20. Without this, believe me, the swear jar will have at least this amount in it!

As the quote says, it is worth a bit more effort to remove the 4 bolts & remove the brake assembly from the T/F box. This does make the job easier.

Apart from the above, it is a pretty straightforward job.

Cheers,

Lionel

600mm x 300mm x 76mm Dual Pass intercooler.
Replaced the ac condenser with a shorter unit, only as wide as the radiator now.
Removed the 2 bonnet catch support bars, made a custom bracket that now supports the bonnet catch and slam panel along with ac condenser and fmic.
Cut off and blanked the 76mm inlet/out, installed new in/out in the correct direction.
Fabricated a custom fan shroud that covers the radiator only, retaining the viscous fan.
Created an extended grill surround to complete.
Prior, inlet temps to manifold averaged 72 degrees, max observed was 89 degrees.
Now with FMIC, temp is 34 average, stays below 38 degrees.

The old one had become loose on the passenger side, not sure if the nut worked loose or whether it had just started to wear. Drivers side was still OK. Not too bad a job, took about 45 minutes to do both.

Mine were like that after 75,000km, the Super Pro bushes stopped the rear steer that was becoming noticeable with the OE ones. (Or at least until the A frame to chassis crush tubes and bolts started to flog out later [emoji23])

Finished retrimming my headlining, along with making up panels for the rear. Yes that's camping mattress material [biggrin]
Material used to line was a cheap black polar fleece blanket from Kmart. Worked out rather well, just need to make up some
covers for the ribs.
Installed my mud roof console at the same time.

Haven't done it per se, but will soon enough. Ordered BAS' hi flow intercooler, 170 remap and 5 ply silicon hoses. Also ordered Provent 200 catch can. Once they all arrive will install all. Can't wait to see and feel the difference to the stock 2.2

Wondering what I should aim for next. Need a monitoring system for EGT's, long range tank, and new suspension all round would be nice.

Today's job was to fit a D2 handbrake lever. Was a fairly easy job, having a 25mm sheet metal hole saw already helped the most.

Reusing the rubber gaiter makes it almost looks factory.

Inspired by JDNSW's approach to replacing his Clutch & Welch Plug (see here https://www.aulro.com/afvb/series-ii-and-iia/285823-clutch-welch-plug-4.html#post3099119) where he didn't rush to get it done and therefore did quite a bit of other minor repairs/tidying up along the way.

I needed to replace the offside rear hub oil seal which I noticed was dropping oil on the inside of the tyre/wheel and being locked down due to the pandemic, I didn't need to hurry. I gathered all the tools required for the job & began to dismantle the hub.
A secondary advantage to having oil fed wheel bearings is that you get a warning (oil leaking onto wheel & tyre) when a seal fails before the bearing fails - as I've often seen with greased bearings. Also, once dismantled, with oil fed bearings instead of greased bearings, everything is much easier to clean up.

I decided to take the brake backing plate off to clean the area easier and noticed a couple of small cracks developing around one of the mounting bolts. A bit of time on the welder and a bit of paint then I cleaned everything up before deciding it was time for lunch while everything dried.

After a long lunch and a few other non related chores it was time to put everything back together which was so easy with everything nice and clean. All up, I spent most of the day doing a job which I have previously done in a quarter of the time. On reflection, I'm not sure if my leisurely approach to the job was due to ageing or the covid lockdown!

Trip before last to town the cruise control stopped working.

As I was still reassembling the 2a, and dreading the thought of troubleshooting it (last time this happened it was a broken wire joining to a pin on a plug), I decided to leave it.

Last night I had a thought - maybe it is a mechanical problem, which at least would be easy to identify? (It is an aftermarket cruise control, fitted before I left Melbourne, which means before 1994.)

So I dashed out with a torch and lifted the bonnet to see if there was anything obvious. Bingo!

The bowden cable from the vacuum actuator has its inner cable connected to the throttle lever on the injection pump bu about 3cm of the sort of chain that is made of a row of balls, to allow the accelerator cable to move the lever without interference. It had broken away at the lever end.

So this afternoon, after cutting a small load of firewood, I took it to the shed, opened the bonnet right back against the roof, and went to work. Took me less than an hour to remove the broken chain, shorten it by a link, reassemble, and adjust the cable position. Assuming that all the links are also worn, I'll see if I can find some more of this chain in town when next there.

It required cranking two or three times on the first start of the day. after that it ran perfectly well all day. That lead me to think air was getting in over night, which in turn lead me to pick the perished injector return line problem. It only took about $10.00 and about 10 mins to do the job, so if you're in doubt, just do it and eliminate that possibility. Easy.

This is my homemade shower cubicle. Frame slides in under roof rack, curtain is just a wall section from a 3 x 3 gasebo that simply velcros onto frame. Can use poles if windy but not required for support.
Not as fancy or as many special features as the Nomad ones but it works sufficiently to keep SWMBO happy.

You seem to have been much luckier than me! Looking at your excellent photos show a setup identical to mine.

I did this job yesterday & had great difficulty undoing the castellated nut & then breaking the taper!

I prepared a shortened 30mm impact socket with the angle grinder but the Milwaukee 18V impact driver wouldn't even look at it! It finally yielded after heat from a blow torch.

The taper joint also gave grief. None of the usual methods worked, but in the end I lifted the wheels off the ground about 2 cms using a jack under the A frame bracket, so that the taper joint had to hold the full weight of the rear axle & wheels. No amount of work with a hammer seemed to loosen the taper, so in the end I resorted to heat from the blowtorch. After a couple of minutes of this the taper separated with a very satisfying "BANG" as the wheels hit the ground!

After this it was all very straightforward.

My summation: Scomo believes in miracles - I believe in blowtorches!!

Cheers,

Lionel

Fitted an Exmoor trim kit to the drivers seat of the project. Previous owner had stuffed the seat with foam pipe insulation! Took a bit longer than expected as the seat pan welds had cracked away from the frame, so got the Mig out and welded it up also added some braces to stop it happening again. While I was doing the seat I added a seat heater too. Also fitted a new seat belt and as it was a bit frayed and replaced the pedal rubbers.

It has taken four days on my own, in and out of the rain, to drop the LT77/LT230 combo on the old 110 on uneven concrete outside. Thought lock down was imminent four weeks ago and stocked up on oil seals, engine/gearbox mounts and new clutch bits just in case. Why waste a good lock down when you can catch up on the much needed maintenance on the old truck.

So far have discovered a broken gearbox mount (explains the thud), and a leak in the exhaust pipe to manifold join (explains that clatter).

Just started raining again so inside for the evening. Time for a single malt.

Will take a few more days to do the work and get everything back into working mode again.

Did a bit of a service on my 300Tdi. Changed the engine oil and filter, air filter, front and rear diffs and the A frame ball joint grease nipple. Checked the axle breathers. Lub’ed the prop shaft/uj’s.

The oil from the rear diff was a little milky and had a metallic sheen to it but much cleaner than the last change. The front looked new!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210829/39ef56c6b515465879d285677669dee9.jpg

I also drained the swivel housings. Well drained is probably not technically correct as there was just a little trickle out of each. Maybe a couple of tablespoons at best of very dark treacle consistency gunk so filled them 80/90. I have never checked these before, obviously [emoji849]

Finally I adjusted the park brake as it had been sticking and now at least isn’t sticking and holds on our steep track.

Was going to do the gearbox but don’t have a T55 torx. Will sort that after lockdown and was unable to undo the transfer box filler. Fortunately I checked before removing the drain plug!

Rebuilt steering box, new front disks and pads, brand new second hand transfer case (Old one dropped a bearing. I think I'd been flogging it too hard around tight bends in too high a gear. The Transfer case groans like a constipated bull when you do that. Mechanic says, just wear and tear.) new Ashcroft adaptor shaft (Old one wasn't too bad but why not when the things in bits.),new clutch and slave cylinder ( Old clutch wasn't too bad but again why not when the thing's in bits.) new radius arm bushes and a full service. Don't ask how much. I'm trying to forget.

Yesterday I spent the guts of 6 hours sitting in the Puma. No the wife did not come to her senses and throw me out. Our daughter who has special needs had to get some dental work done and it needed to be done under anaesthetic. So we made the hour long drive to the hospital. She went in at 10 am and got out at 4.00 pm. My wife was allowed in until the anaesthetic took effect, then joined me in the Puma. Owing to Covid we could not sit inside the building. It was a cold wet day but worth it in the end. My wife got a call about 2.00pm to go in as they were finished but it was 4.00pm when they got out as they waited those two hours for the anaesthetic to wear off. Needless to say the heater was on maximum for the 40 mile journey home. We were concerned as there were risks involved but the work needed to be done. I did not sit with the engine running so Greta will be pleased to hear that. I got out every so often for a stretch but owing to the wind and rain it was a bit self defeating! Anyway our daughter is in fine form so we are thankful it was not cancelled due to Covid. A lot of medical procedures are being cancelled due to staffing issues.

When I did this I found that try as I might I could not get the steering wheel centred. I took to carrying a hammer, a piece of wood and a socket set. When I was out driving it and stopped I'd remove the steering wheel and move it a few splines then drive and see how it sat. Took a few times to get it bang on. The wife would go shopping and I'd remove the steering wheel in the car park and refit.

Liking the floor lights.

Tied into door circuit I presume.

I was thinking I might, but then I have used the side light circuit. The led lights are on a rheostat so I can have them very low at night. I found that it is very useful mainly for passengers needing to find items, and also gives a nice sense. I got the idea from my wife's BMW which has a red glow to match the instrument backlighting. So I matched the green!

Probably not everyone cup of tea, but I like them so far.

Before you collapse laughing, this is a work in progress. It needs painting and screwed in place. It is to add some extra storage space to my daughter's 90. It sits in front of the bulk head. It is being made from an aluminium gutter that came down in the wind and got twisted. This is additional space to that behind the seats. The rear seat will still fold down. I will cover the top edge with heavy tape to keep it safe. It will be fitted slightly above the floor to allow the mat to be removed and refitted. Like I say a work in progress..

Just had my 1999 10P 130 TD5 tuning map by Shack
All I can say about this Bloke Shack he is an absolute pleasure to work with.
After doing a search about remapping and tunes on AULRO I noticed that Shack’s name kept on being mentioned.
So, I PM’ed him with what mods I had on the 130 and what I wanted to do in the future, and he was back to me straight away.
Shack told me what he needs from me and once sent he was back to me quickly and talked me thru how to install it. (I am a Bit of a numpty when it comes to these sort of things)
All I can say about the tune he gave me is WOW it has transformed the 130 into a more pleasurable vehicle to drive.
I highly RECOMMEND Shack

Just finished fitting a new Rijidij wheel carrier. It was a bit more tricky than I thought due to the long-range tank tucked under the wheel arch and so it was difficult getting the chassis bracket tucked in behind the tank. I removed some of the auxiliary fuel tank bolts and managed to tuck the bracket in behind the chassis. I managed to get two of the 10mm bolts in and tightened them up really well. For the other two bolts I used an 8mm rivnut with high tensile bolts into the chassis and bolted them up from the outside (see photo).

Very impressed with the design and beautifully made. Good Aussie engineering. I’m really happy with the quality and Murray at Rijidij was great to deal with. He always kept me posted with progress.176944176945176946

A little TLC for the almost 20 year old Td5 Defender ................

- Engine oil & full flow filter change, I only replace the centrifuge filter every second or third oil change. I pulled one of these apart once and found very little build up so figured that I could extend their recommended change interval while still having it do what it's designed to do - I think the recommended service interval for the two filters is back to front, IMHO it should be FF filter every oil change and Centrifuge filter every second or third oil change.
- Checked transmission fluids, greased drive shaft unis.
- Replaced fuel & air filters
- Replaced leaking clutch master cylinder but not slave cyl - discovered that the thread on the pipe inlet of Td5 slave is finer than the 110/Perentie slave. Slave cyl will be done when I exchange for correct unit!
- Replaced leaking NS rear hub oil seal - a much cleaner/easier job when running oil fed bearings instead of greased bearings.
- Replaced brake fluid & checked brake pad wear, all OK so new pads were returned to the cupboard until I've done another 10,000kms.

Looking forward to more trouble free motoring.

Changed the oil in my Defender 90 TD5 yesterday for the first time since acquiring it. I didn’t change either of the oil filters as they had only done 3000 klicks since the last change but it still took half an hour.

The sump plug must have been done up by a gorilla, it was so tight! The ill-fitting aluminium sealing washer had been crushed to less than 1mm thick. Then I spent the next 10 minutes fishing out all the bits of Teflon plumber’s tape that had fused to the sump thread and sealing flange…ugh!!:bat: All this apparently was done by a mobile mechanic (not an LR indy) for the previous owner.
Soooo, sump plug back in with a new proper copper washer (CDU1001L), nipped up to just 23Nm (no gorilla needed), filled with Penrite HPR Diesel 5 5W-40, no leaks.[thumbsupbig]
Same mobile mechanic changed the fuel filter using a Cooper filter and sure enough it was leaking. Ditched that and fitted a Coopers fuel filter, no leaks. It is amazing the difference an 's' can make.[smilebigeye]

I note that the mobile mechanic in question is no longer in business.

Will be interested to know how your LOF clutch goes... A good mate of mine had his LOF clutch on his 130 give up the ghost after only 9000kms. The Centre clutch plate failed and he never got a chance to take it offroad. not really "do on your defer" but defer centric. Yesterday i found out the support bearing the MT82 is shot and box is coming apart for the 2nd time in 220,000kms. Byproduct of being 3.5T and not treated with sympathy. Also the front roller bearing in transfer is the consequential injury from a snapped front axle. Sequence, snapped an axle in VHC that caused the front drivers wheel to bind up bfore the axle let go. A few months later i notice the UJ at the TFC end was grumbly. A few months later the transfer case starts to make noise. a gift for the Defer also. Bought an intake manifold for the LS conversion this morning. It was priced to good to pass up. I have 3 x LS intake manifolds, but who is counting (2 truck, 1 car).

I picked it up form Melbourne on Thursday. A shout out to Transit Auto who replaced the engine and a pile of ancillaries and were thoroughly professional and did a great job. Now for the sad story.. Just after easter we went to Bendigo to pick up a cultivator that we had bought armed with a car trailer, on the way home there was a whoosh and a loss of power on the way home and a ride on a tilt tray to an unnamed repairer resulted. That repairer replaced the intercooler and injectors, assured us all was good and it made it about two kilometers before it ran away and had to be stalled in top gear to stop it. A further tilt tray ride ensued and it was shipped to Transit Auto who specialise in Puma motors and also seem to know their way around a Defender as well.
The post mortem was that either an injector went and hydro locked the motor at 100KM/H or possibly the turbo seal achieved the same result with engine oil. The runaway also cooked $2600 worth of new injectors to the point where the tips were blued so I got to buy them twice. I picked it up Thursday and stayed at Seymour and then drove it home on Friday to Yass. All went well and I got a bit less than 12l/100KM on the way home.
Anyway, destroying modern diesel engines is a very expensive game indeed. It had 175,000 on the clock when it checked out. If you've got a 2.2 Puma give consideration to spending the dough and doing your injectors. The engine is noticably quieter at idle and one of the signs of failing injectors is them being noisy.

Tote

Sorry to point this out - my County is on its original set of injectors. I had them overhauled at about 200,000, and was told I had wasted my money. The Isuzu engine has now done 716,000km, with no indication it needs anything done to the injectors. Down a bit on power, probably because of compression loss due to wear in the sleeves and rings.

I thought the newer engines in Defenders were supposed to be an improvement?

just not a Jap engine from the 80's with a cast iron head, cast iron block. A fare comparison would be to compare the Isuzu engine with a Toyota 1HZ engine.

I've been researching ways to resolve this problem without going to the soup kitchen. I knew it would happen sooner rather than later but didn't bother doing anything about it. I haven't even bothered to get my EKA code which could have saved time and money. Feel free to point out that these issues don't exist for County owners John. I disagree. Remembering that this vehicle was designed as a utility vehicle, it seems to me that reliability and longevity should be among the top priorities. And the fair comparison is with the previous engines for the same vehicle. Of course, the end of Australian production was also a major factor.

(I am fully aware that the change was partly dictated by the need for an emissions compliant engine, and preferably one with a lot more power. And I a also aware that the key reason for the Isuzu's merits is that it was designed as a truck engine, not a car or light commercial engine.)

Some of the items recently done.. Lithium second battery and new cranking battery, Towpro (not for the desert), new ARB brushless compressor, new NPC clutch and solid flywheel (as it was spinning up the valeo one), new everything moving mounts, discs and calipers (ouch). Other improvements in the last couple of years were remapped ecu, new exhaust, Ashcroft ATB, TD5 Spy, Koni RAID.

Service wise all the usual stuff just recently (replaced all the oils). Some notables are ravenol MT2 gearbox oil which has improved the change markedly, and a change to 5w-40 which I think was a good move. Oil sampling was just what you want.. unremarkable.

Took it out to Mt Mee state forrest yesterday for a little drive around to check everything before the trip. I can confidently say that in so many ways this car is comfortably the best car it's ever been. Which is kinda odd for a 20yo car.

Next years project is soundproofing. :o

My fair comparison was ment as, Isuzu engine highly reliable and long lasting, Toyota 1HZ engine highly reliable long lasting.
Comparing either of the above God's engines to just about anything else isnt fair on other engines.
As in comparing the Ford MK7 transit engine to either of the above BUT comparing it to any Land Rover engine and it is a good engine, simplistic design reasonably well built.

A Defender has always been a hodge bodge of a vehicle rather than a purposely designed and built vehicle.
Land Rover reliability and longevity hasnt been a priority for the brand for many a decade and have become a irrelevant brand.

Got a new battery for the 90. Colder Melbourne nights and it was on its way out. Don't know the history of the one being replaced.

Put a dashcam in the Perentie, VIOFO A229 Pro, audio and video is excelent, would highly recommend this dashcam.

When people watch your video.. "Hey it's all in slow motion".. No that's the car!

Sorry I couldn't help that.

Cut rust out of bottom of firewall where I was getting a nice breeze on my feet, made up some panels to fit, add screws, rivets and sikaflex (as needed). Good as gold.

Fitted a full width front floor matt/trans tunnel cover I got from Ranga (Hit him up if you want one for a good price)

Cut some rust out of side rail and welded in new metal. I don't think the rest of it (both sides) is much longer for this world though. TJM siderails/steps not best quality ever.

Had the keyless entry transponder replaced. Cameron {All Jaguar} came over and did the job on the road out the front. Now I don't need an EKA code to start the thing after entering with the key. Yay.

Last weekend was dummy fit of LS into the 130. Down tools waiting on stuff to come in. I'm faced with the tension between (i) needing a rear facing intake manifold because of clearance issues presented by the forward facing intake manifold, intake pipe and the viscous fan blade; (ii) the necessary clearance to the firewall for the intake pipe; and (iii) locating the engine far enough back to have most of the weight behind the front axle. Most that do an LS fit thermo fans which opens up options for engine placement, piping and other packaging issues that i'm navigating. I'm putting out about 100hp more than a 6.2L and that comes with extra heat, thus the viscous fan. Ordered a Donaldson Cobra head that is tight fitting hopefully to clear the viscous fan on a forward facing intake manifold set up. That will solve an engine placement issue but then introduce a intake pipe layout problem because of the AC compressor. i still haven't worked out an air filter solution. On my layout, there isn't much room on the drivers side for the filter housing. There is room on the passenger side but that is on the wrong side for the snorkel. Who said an engine conversion was easy and can be knocked over in a weekend? That's right, someone that has never done it.

on a less exciting note, the refresh of the transfer has become more expensive. ATB is fubar from a bearing welding to the journal and the high range gear is scored from a fubar bearing.

Hi guys, first real post since joining. My (new to me) '99 130 has at least one stuck piston, so it was time to pull the motor. Hoping to swap in the 300tdi from my '96 rust bucket..er disco... after a fair few rust repairs, anyway, first big step achieved today. 194587

Welcome! Is the 130 a Td5?

Got mine back (again) from the repair shop a week or so ago, the vast increase in torque from the new motor [bigrolf] lunched the jack shaft between the gearbox and Transfer case. I'm now the proud owner of a LOF replacement shaft and while they had the transfer case out they replaced it with the rebuilt unit with the ashcroft centre LSD that I had done and didn't much want to fit. Thanks to the Series Workshop in Canberra for fitting me in and doing your usual excellent work. That Ranger Super duty is looking cheaper every day but I'm sure it wont have the "charm" of a Defender [bigrolf]. Anyway, it made it out to the farm successfully today and has been doing commuter duties this week as well.

Regards,
Tote

I got the engine into the shed and stripped it down, a stuck #1 & #2 piston were persuaded out with a bit of lumberjacking and the BIG hammer. Years of sitting with a bad head gasket and just a little water on top of the pistons was enough to seal it right up and grow a good crust on the bores. Tomorrow the search begins to find a local shop to bathe (coolant galleries are chockablock with snots) and inspect the block before I go though the joy of gathering new bits. Crankshaft and camshaft look in great shape at this stage. Hoping all is well as the planned swap engine has more than twice the kms as this one... and will be the final rites on my trusty old disco.
